Electric Motor
b. The very basic application of electromagnetism is in the use of
motors. An electric motor is another application of electromagnets.
Suppose you put some electromagnets on a wheel and put some permanent
magnets around the wheel.
c. The electromagnets could be made to attract and repel the
surrounding magnets, causing the wheel to turn. By varying the
current, the speed of the motor can be made to vary.
d. The first DC motor using a commutator was invented by William
Sturgeon in 1832.
a. CAT Machine
b. Another very useful application of electromagnetism is the "CAT
scan machine." This machine is usually used in hospitals to diagnose a
disease.
c. As we know that current is present in our body and the stronger the
current, the strong is the magnetic field. This scanning technology is
able to pick up the magnetic fields, and it can be easily identified
where there is a great amount of electrical activity inside the body.
d. There were two people who invented the CAT Machine. It was Allen
Cormack and Godfrey Hounsfield
a. Electric Bells
b. Electric bells have been widely used at railroad crossings,
in telephones, fire and burglar alarms, as school bells, doorbells,
and alarms in industrial plants, but they are now being widely
replaced with electronic sounders.
c. In electrical bells electromagnetic coils are used to move the
striker against the bell to make sound. When the coil is energized, it
will attract the iron striker, which strikes the bell. As soon as the
striker moves toward the bell, the electrical contact will break and
the electromagnet will be demagnetized. The striker after striking it
is returned to its original position by the spring tension and the
electrical contact will be made once again, thus the cycle will
continues until the switch is in the open position.
d. Doug Hougen, from Flint in Michigan
a. Magnetic Levitation Train
b. Maglev is a system of transportation that uses magnetic levitation
to suspend, guide and propel vehicles from magnets rather than using
mechanical methods, such as wheels, axles and bearings.
c. The concept of electromagnetism is used in high speed maglev
trains. They use power full electromagnetic force or EMF to provide
both magnetic levitation of the train and propulsion. Magnetic
levitation is a phenomenon by which an object is suspended with no
support other than magnetic fields. The magnetic pressure is used to
neutralize the forces and effect of the gravitation.
d. The maglev train was first invented in 1902. It was invented by a
guy named Alfred Zehan. Japan invented it all the council in Japan.
a. Electromagnetic lifting cranes
b. Electromagnetic lifting cranes are used to lift and transport steel
scraps, sheets, medium and thick plates, and steel bars.
c. They use electromagnetism to magnetize the coil for lifting and
demagnetize the electromagnetic coil for dropping the materials in the
required place. An electromagnetic container lifter works in the
similar manner for transporting the container from the ship to port
and vice versa.
d. British scientist William Sturgeon invented the electromagnet in
1824. The crane for lifting heavy loads was invented by the Ancient
Greeks in the late 6th century BC.

a. Electric Fan
b. While fans are often used to cool people, they do not actually cool
air (if anything, electric fans warm it slightly due to the warming of
their motors), but work by evaporative cooling of sweat and
increased heat conduction into the surrounding air due to the airflow
from the fans.
c. the motor works on the principle of electromagnetic induction,
which keeps it rotating on and on and thus making the blade hub of the
fan to rotate, blowing air. Not restricting to fan, many other
appliances use electromagnetism as a basic principle.
d. Schulyer Wheeler invented the electric fan in 1886. It was the
principal method of home cooling until Willis Havilland Carrier
invented the first air conditioner system.
a. Memory Stick
b. Use to store data
c. The data are stored in electromagnetic format in the form of bits
and bytes. Even the computer hard ware is having a magnetic tape which
works on the electromagnetic principle.
d. Sony launched the Memory Stick, a type of flash memory, in October
of 1998. It is their idea, and only later did they team up with
SanDisk to further develop it. The invention may have come a year or
so earlier, as there is (obviously) a short delay between the
invention and the release of a product. A link can be found below.

a. Telephone
b. The telephones and mobiles we use to make a call over huge
c. The interaction of the signals and the electromagnetic pulses, make
the telephones and mobiles very handy. In power circuits, we use a
device called relays, which has the potential to cut down a large
current to the load, with the application of small amount of current.
A small magnetic coil, which when energized, makes or breaks contact,
thus doing a greater amount of work on the other end.
d. Alexander Graham Bell, a Scottish-born inventor, scientist,
philanthropist and teacher of the deaf is the person most widely
credited as the inventor of the electric telephone.
a. Loudspeakers
b. A loudspeaker (or "speaker") is an electro acoustic transducer that
produces sound in response to an electrical audio signal input.
c. The loudspeakers in your radio, television or stereo system
consists of a permanent magnet surrounding an electromagnet that is
attached to the loudspeaker membrane or cone. By varying the electric
current through the wires around the electromagnet, the electromagnet
and the speaker cone can be made to back and forth. If the variation
of the electric current is at the same frequencies of sound waves, the
resulting vibration of the speaker cone will create sound waves,
including that from voice and music.
d. The first speaker ever invented was by Graham Bell, as part of
another invention, the telephone. Then, a couple of years later
moving-coil speakers were patented by two men. The first box enclosed
speaker system was made by Cabesse, a French company.
a. Tape recorder
b. A tape recorder is an audio storage device that records and plays
back sounds, including articulated voices, usually using magnetic
tape, either wound on a reel or in a cassette, for storage.
c. The tape then is a record of the electrical signal. When it passes
by another small electromagnet, it creates an electrical signal,
duplicating that of the original signal. This signal can be amplified
and played back through loudspeakers.
d. The Tape Recorder was invented in the U.S. The creator of it is
Joseph Begun, who was born December 2, 1905- January 5, 1995.
