3 PRELIMINARY OPERATIONS:

3.1 Review and become familiar with entire procedure before beginning Calibration Process.

WARNING

Unless otherwise designated, and prior to beginning the Calibration Process,
ensure that all test equipment voltage and/or current outputs are set to zero (0)
or turned off, where applicable. Ensure that all equipment switches are set to
the proper position before making connections or applying power.

3.2 Bring the TI into the calibration area 8 hours prior to beginning Calibration Process.

3.3 The temperature of the calibration area must be within 67 to 79 F and must not vary more than 2 F during the
Calibration Process.

3.4 Use only that portion of the Calibration Process applicable to the TI being calibrated.

3.5 The rounding of the TI Accuracy Limits to the next greater 0.1 is required due to the TI resolution of 0.1 and
does not require a Limited Certification Label for the TI.

3.6 Make a copy of Appendix A to use as a Worksheet.

3
T.O. 33K6-4-1597-1
4 CALIBRATION PROCESS:

NOTE

There are two methods to perform the Calibration Process. The Preferred
Method uses the Indexing Table and the Alternate Method uses the Sine Plate.
If the TI fails any of the calibration tests, refer to Appendix B for adjustments.
If calibrating an independent TI Sensor which does not have an angle display,
perform only para 4.4.

NOTE

Unless otherwise specified, verify the results of each test and take corrective
action whenever the test requirement is not met, before proceeding.

4.1 ANGLE MEASUREMENT CALIBRATION: (Preferred Method)

4.1.1 Setup the test equipment as shown in Figure 1 with the Master Level against the Parallel Bars. The Parallel
Bars must be secured with Clamps or Modeling Clay to prevent movement.

4.1.2 Use the Master Level to level the Leveling Plate across its length to within 30 arc seconds.

4.1.3 Remove the Master Level from the Leveling Plate.

4.1.4 Place the TI on the Leveling Plate against the Parallel Bars.

WARNING

To prevent serious injury to personnel, the counterweights on the CD12
Indexing Table must be adjusted to balance the weight of the Right Angle Iron.
If the counterweights are not adjusted, the Indexing Table could rotate with
dangerous force when unlocked. If using an Indexing Table without
counterweights, be careful when unlocking the Indexing Table when the Right
Angle Iron is in an unbalanced position. Use Clamps as necessary to secure the
Indexing Table.

4.4 CLINOMETER SENSOR CALIBRATION: (For Independent Clinometer Sensors without Angle
Display Only)

CAUTION

The TI Sensor contains an electronic microcircuit which can be damaged by
static electricity. A grounding wrist strap must be worn when handling the
Sensor and the Sensor must be stored in a static protective bag. Use care not to
damage the Sensor when mounting the Sensor to the Right Angle Iron.

11
T.O. 33K6-4-1597-1
NOTE

This paragraph will only be performed when calibrating an independent TI
Sensor which does not have an angle display. The calibration consists of
measuring the Sensor output voltage for applied input angle and recording the
values in a calibration chart which is provided to the user.

4.4.1 Connect the DC Power Supply and Digital Multimeter to appropriate power sources, set Power switches to
On and allow warm-up IAW manufacturer instructions.

4.4.2 Setup the test equipment as shown in Figure 3 with the Right Angle Iron against the Sine Plate side rails.
Position the TI Sensor so the centerline of the Sensor mounting holes is perpendicular to the to the working surface
of the Sine Plate. The TI Sensor must be secured with Clamps or Modeling Clay to prevent movement. The
lettering on the Sensor must be right side up and facing the technician. This is the TI Direct position.

4.4.3 Place the Master Level on the Sine Plate. Use the Master Level and Leveling Plate to level the Sine Plate
across its length and width to within 10 arc seconds.

4.4.4 Connect the TI Sensor to the DC Power Supply and set the input voltage to the TI to 12 VDC and -12 VDC.

4.4.5 Connect the TI Sensor output to the Digital Multimeter.

4.4.6 Adjust the orientation of the TI Sensor on the Right Angle Iron until the Digital Multimeter indicates
within -0.006 to 0.006 VDC.

4.4.7 Rotate the Right Angle Iron 180 to the same location against the Sine Plate side rails. This is the TI Reverse
position. The lettering on the TI Sensor will remain right side up and face away fromthe technician.

4.4.9 Alternately rotate the TI Sensor between the Direct and Reverse positions and adjust the orientation of the Sensor
on the Right Angle Iron until the Digital Multimeter indication remains within -0.006 to 0.006 VDC in both positions.

NOTE

The TI Sensor 0 reference angle has now been established. Use care not to bump
or move the Sensor fromthe present orientation on the Right Angle Iron.

4.4.10 Ensure the TI Sensor is in the Direct position.

4.4.11 Use Sample Worksheet 1 in Appendix A to record the Digital Multimeter indication as the 0 Angle Output
Voltage.

4.4.12 Wring together a Gage Block stack equal to the first corresponding value listed in the Gage Block Size
column of Table 4 for the TI being calibrated.

NOTE

When the TI Sensor is in the Direct position, the angle established on the Sine
Plate will produce a positive TI Sensor output voltage. When the TI Sensor is
in the Reverse position, the angle established on the Sine Plate will produce a
negative TI Sensor output voltage.

4.4.13 Insert the Gage Block stack into the Sine Plate.

4.4.14 Record the Digital Multimeter indication in the corresponding Output Voltage column of Sample Worksheet
1 in Appendix A.

4.4.15 Rotate the TI Sensor 180 to the Reverse position in the same location against the Sine Plate side rails.

4.4.16 Record the Digital Multimeter indication to the second decimal place in the corresponding Output Voltage
column of Sample Worksheet 1 in Appendix A.

4.4.17 Repeat steps 4.4.12 through 4.4.16 for each remaining corresponding value listed in the Gage Block Size
column of Table 4 for the TI being calibrated.

Adjustment Procedure

B.1 INTERNAL CALIBRATION FOR TI WITH 45 RANGE:

NOTE

Adjustments will be performed only if the TI fails to meet the parameters of the
Calibration Process. Adjustment to the TI will recalculate internal correction
factors which are stored in the TI memory.

NOTE

If the TI battery is removed, the correction factors calculated in this paragraph will
be lost fromthe TI memory and the TI will revert to factory determined values.

B.1.1 Setup the test equipment as shown in Figure 1A with the Master Level against the Sine Plate side rails.

B.1.2 Use the Master Level and Leveling Plate to level the Sine Plate across its length and width to within
10 arc seconds.

B.1.3 Remove the Master Level fromthe Sine Plate.

B.1.4 Remove the rear cover of the TI. Set the TI to On.

NOTE

Some older model TIs do not have a Calibration Switch and the Internal
Calibration cannot be performed.

B.1.5 Refer to Figure B-1. Use a small, blunt object, such as a ball point pen, to press the TI Calibration switch.

CAUTION

Do not move the TI Sensor shown on the left side of the TI in Figure B-1.
