Adaptive Provisioning of Human Expertise in Service-oriented Systems

ABSTRACT
Web-based collaborations have become essential in todays business environments. Due
to the availability of various SOA frameworks, Web services emerged as the de facto technology
to realie fle!ible com"ositions of services. While most e!isting work focuses on the discovery
and com"osition of software based services, we highlight conce"ts for a "eo"le-centric Web.
#nowledge-intensive environments clearly demand for "rovisioning of human e!"ertise along
with sharing of com"uting resources or business data through software-based services. $o
address these challenges, we introduce an ada"tive a""roach allowing humans to "rovide their
e!"ertise through services using SOA standards, such as WSD% and SOA&. $he seamless
integration of humans in the SOA loo" triggers numerous social im"lications, such as evolving
e!"ertise and drifting interests of human service "roviders. 'ere we "ro"ose a framework that is
based on interaction monitoring techni(ues enabling ada"tations in SOA-based socio-technical
systems.

$hese systems are characteried by both technical and human+social as"ects that are
tightly bound and interconnected.
$he technical as"ects are very similar to traditional SOAs, including facilities to de"loy,
register and discover services, as well as to su""ort fle!ible interactions.

1lient-driven interventions are the means to "rotect customers from unreliable services.
,or e!am"le, services that miss deadlines or do not res"ond at all for a longer time are re"laced
by other more reliable services in future discovery o"erations.
&rovider-driven interventions are desired and initiated by the service owners to shield
themselves from malicious clients. ,or instance, re(uests of clients "erforming a denial of
service attack by sending multi"le re(uests in relatively short intervals are blocked 2instead of
"rocessed3 by the service.
