MAKE A SPLASH
Having the kids off over the summer
holidays can be costly.
When theres a wet day, or you just need
to calm it down a bit, art and craft activities
at home can come into their own. They are
free and get kids thinking about reusing things
theyve nished with before recycling them
A quick trawl around the house can unearth
some great supplies. Why not make it part of
the adventure?
Cereal boxes are nice thin cardboard, letters
that are only printed on one side become
drawing paper, while dessert pots couldnt be
better for paint.
When it comes to what to make themes can
work well. To make musical instruments think
drums or shakers, so tubes (loo roll, Pringles)
or large yoghurt pots that can be lled with
anything thatll make a noise are great.
Or the theme could be about different skills,
cutting and weaving are popular for smaller
children. Crisp packets and those foil pouches
that Capri sun drinks come in are good here as
they can be cut into strips.
To make a collage, the string bags that oranges
come in, bubble wrap from strawberry trays
and scrunched up crisp packets are all unusual
textures. Use different materials as part of a
story in a box project, about the beach, or a
favourite CBeebies show.
Why not leave it to their imagination some-
times with a what can you make with this?
challenge.
A last top tip is to always try to have some-
where to store any ongoing project so that
you dont have to move it every time you need
the table to fold the washing on or eat tea at,
a sofa on legs is always a good place to push
things under!

Respect, what is respect? An easy
way to think of respect is to treat
other people in a way that we
ourselves would like to be treated.
Some of the ways we can respect
each other are listed below:
Listen to others when they are telling
you their ideas/opinions, without
interrupting, critising, or poking
fun at.
Try not to gossip or tell lies about
others, as this can hurt a persons
feelings.
Give a compliment when someone
has tried really hard at something.
The trying is what counts.
Accept we are all different.
We all look different, and all have
different personalities. Being unique is
fabulous!

The Vale of Glamorgan Council aims to keep
foster children in the Vale, rather than nding
placements in other counties. When a child
moves into foster care outside their own
county, they leave their family, their friends,
their school and their support network.
As part of the campaign, the council appointed
foster carer, Kay Grifths MBE, as one of its
fostering ambassadors for the Vale. Kay, who
fosters with her husband David, said:
My husband and I made that call to fostering
services more than 35 years ago and have never
once regretted it. Every child deserves the
chance to have a happy and fullled life and some
children are not able to live with their own fami-
lies for different reasons. Foster care has a huge
impact on a child, whether its for a few weeks
or for years. As a foster carer, you have the
opportunity to give a child happy memories for
a lifetime, no matter what has happened before,
or what may happen later in their lives. For my
husband and I, it has been a privilege.
The Vale councils fostering team welcomes
applications from people from all walks of life,
whether you are interested in providing foster
care for respite, emergency, short-term or long-
term placements.
What are the requirements to be a foster carer?
Do you have at least one spare bedroom, a
stable lifestyle and access to transport?
Are you a great communicator, with patience
and tolerance?
Have you got energy and motivation?
Do you have time and commitment?
Can you empathise with a child and manage chal-
lenging behaviour?
If the answer is yes, the councils fostering team
would love to hear from you.
What do foster carers receive?
Dedicated support 24 hours a day, 7 days a
week, 52 weeks a year
Competitive rates of pay
Comprehensive training leading to professional
qualications
Access to monthly support forums, where you
can share experiences with other foster carers
Support from our fostering team, including your
own allocated supervising social worker

Lots of people start diets with the best of
intentions but can often nd themselves giving
up very quickly, defeated by hunger, boredom
or feelings of deprivation. At Slimming World
we want people to know that losing weight
doesnt have to be that way, that not all
slimming attempts are doomed and not all
diets are the same. Its easy to be wooed by
the plans that promise the fastest loss, but its
really important that slimmers think sensibly
about which plan they choose and look at
which offers the most chance of long-term
success. Diets based on deprivation can be
very unhealthy and are almost impossible to
keep up, meaning youre bound to throw in
the towel!
Slimming Worlds Food Optimising eating
plan is exible and generous. Our members
are able to satisfy their appetite on hundreds
of healthy, everyday foods like fruit and veg,
pasta, rice, potatoes, lean meat, poultry,
sh, fat-free dairy, eggs and more, so small
portions are a thing of the past and you never
have to go hungry! It means you can enjoy
all your favourite meals just by making small
changes to the way you shop, cook and eat
and still eat the same healthy dishes as the
rest of your family.
At Slimming World members also
develop the skills and tools to overcome the
psychological and emotional challenges that
every slimmer faces at some point, including
learning to be kind to yourself and get back
on the horse when you do have a blip.
Anyone who wants to lose weight without
ever going hungry will nd a world of support
at your local Slimming World group.
Children aged between 11-16yrs are also
welcome with a plan showing cool swaps
helping them make informed decisions.
We are in partnership with the Royal
College of Midwives offering a healthy plan for
pregnant and breast feeding mums.
Dont delay nd out today !!

Johns Cafe is the oldest cafe
on Barry Island and one of
the oldest cafes in Wales.
It was opened in 1928 by
the John family and built its
reputation on good food,
good service & cleanliness.
During World War II the
cafe was used as barracks for
servicemen ariving at Barry
Dock. Over the years the cafe
has served many generations
of families, both local and as
holiday makers who return
year after year.
It has recently been given a
fresh new look, undergoing
a complete refurbishment to
bring an early 20th century
cafe into the 21st century,
whilst retaining a traditional
seaside cafe feel. The current
owners Carl & Graham
continue with the original
cafe philosophy offering good
food, good service, cleanliness
and value for
money. They
now sell a large
range of cakes
and pastries
which are a great
accompaniament
to an afternoon
coffee. The
cafe offers a
large outside
seating area with
fantastic sea
views - a wonderful place
to sit and watch the world
go by whilst eating one of
their famous homemade ice
cream desserts. All the ice
cream desserts are made with
Marios award winning ice
cream and are mouthwatering
on a hot sunny afternoon.
The cafe still offers all the
traditional seaside fayre - Cod
& Chips, Sausage & chips,
Egg & Chips, but still to this
day use only homemade
chips. The roast meals are a
particular favourite with the
regulars whilst a lighter option
could be a Panini with their
homemade coleslaw. A warm
welcome awaits you at the
OLDEST & the BEST cafe on
Barry Island.

Cyberbullying is when someone uses
technology, like the internet or a mobile
phone, to deliberately hurt, humiliate, harass,
intimidate or threaten someone else. It is
different from bullying at school or in the
community because it can happen at any time
of the day or night and it may feel like you
cant get away from it. This may leave you
feeling scared and unsafe at home.
Top 10 tips if you are being cyberbullied
1) Tell an adult you trust if you are being
cyberbullied
2) Dont respond or retaliate to bullying messages
it could make things worse
3) Block users who send you nasty messages
4) Save abusive emails or messages (or texts) you
receive
5) Make a note of dates and times you receive
bullying messages, as well as details you have of the
users ID and the url.
6) Dont pass on any cyberbullying videos or
messages this is cyberbullying
7) If you are bullied repeatedly change your user
ID, or prole, and use a name that doesnt give any
information away about you
8) Visit CyberMentors https://cybermentors.org.
uk/ you can report any cyberbullying you see to
cybermentors even if it isnt targeted at you.
9) You can talk to someone at Child Line or get
online safety advice at http://www.childline.org.
uk/talk/Pages/Talk.aspx
10) http://www.thinkuknow.co.uk/ is another
very useful website for children and young people
staying safe online
Brighten up a room with this quick and easy
recycled craft idea which uses an old foil pie
plate and sweet wrappers!
Care should be taken with very young chil-
dren as the points of the sun can be sharp.
You will need:
Foil pie plate
Sweet wrappers
Glue
Needle and thread
Cut triangles around the sides of the pie plate
making a set of points. Fold out the points to
make your sun shape.
Glue sweet wrappers to each point of the sun.
Dont worry about cutting them to shape: just
trim when they have dried.
Decorate the center of the sun by gluing on
some scrunched up sweet wrappers. Punch a
small hole and thread a loop of thread through
the top of the sun to hang.

2014 Welsh Proms.
This summer for the 31st year running, Cardiff
City centre will once again be lled with music.
From 19th to the 26th July, St Davids hall takes
on a carnival atmosphere and during that time
music making seems to occupy every space
within, even bursting out onto the streets.
There really is such a variety of music, including
folk, jazz and childrens concerts through to
the evening concerts that form the hub of the
Welsh Proms. We have tickets for one lucky
family to experience the wonder of St Davids
Hall and enjoy the fantastic All Dancing Family
Prom on Saturday 19th July at midday. Present-
ed by Sophie Evans, we look forward to seeing
you for a concert of exciting and colourful
music and a chance for you to dance along with
the orchestra! The programme includes The
Can-Can from Orpheus in the Underworld,
Dance of the Knights from Romeo & Juliet
(theme music from the BBCs The Apprentice)
and Mambo from West Side Story.
To be in with a chance to win a family ticket (2
+ 2), just answer this simple question:
How many years has the
Welsh Proms been running for?
Closing Date:
15th July 2014, 4pm
