Sand chess clock
(and can be quite useful and not only to
have fun building sand chess kingdoms
when relaing near the water#
9o you know and remember what a chess
clock is? If not, log in to your site
psm.fide.com or sm.fide.com and read an
article about this great human invention
that helps limit players? thinking time.

&ut certainly the chess clock has not come
to its modern form all at once. $here were
other tries to schedule the time, and sand
was quite helpful#
At the first international chess tournament
held in Bondon in 6:C6, there were critics
who complained of the slowness of play.
$assilo von Heydebrand und der Basa
46:6:16::D5 was one of the first persons
to propose that each player?s time should
be limited by way of separate clocks or
watches.
In 6:C-, an anonymous writer named A.
%antab wrote that sand glasses should be
used to regulate the moves with a limited
time limit. 'Bet each player have a three1
hour sand glass at his elbow and a friend
on either side to turn it. )hile the player
is thinking, the sand must be allowed to
runE while his opponent is thinking, his
glass will be laid hori<ontally on the table
and the running suspended*. $he idea was
backed by Howard (taunton and other
prominent chess players. (and glasses
were used in chess matches and
tournaments from 6:76 to 6:8C.
However, temperature and humidity
affect the sand in the sand glasses and
was not very accurate. Also, a player
would accidentally turn over the wrong
end of his timer or his opponent?s timer
and cause problems.

$he first chess match that used a sand
glass was the Anderssen von >olisch
match, held in Bondon in 6:76. $he time
control was -2 moves in - hours.
