History is for everyone
History, as a subject, does not appeal to everyone, but with
changes to the National Curriculum all students are required
to study it.
While some topics may be a drag try to focus on the skills
you are building.
In our program this year, therefore, we want to make History
interesting and varied for those who might not like History, but
make it challenging and beneficial for those students who will
choose to study Modern History or Ancient History in Years
11 and 12.
Can you identify FIVE faces or events?

The Semester structure
Weeks 1 and 2 - What were the significant issues, events,
people and ideas of the 20th century?
Weeks 3-8: How did World War II impact on Australia and
Australians?
Weeks 9-15: How have the worlds people fought for and
achieved rights and freedoms?
Weeks 16-20: How have music, movies, fashion and other
pop culture elements defined generations?
Thinking ahead
This is an important year for you as you make decisions about
your future.
You will have to decide whether you are taking an OP or non-
OP course.
OP students are those who intend studying at university level.
Studying History in Senior is invaluable in terms of:
research skills
note-taking
critical thinking
essay writing
general knowledge
organisational skills
problem-solving
QCS preparation
Three-storey intellect
Basement level: Gathering
First floor: Processing (Doing things with what you gather)
Penthouse: Applying (Doing more with what you have
discovered and decided.
Throughout this year in all your subjects, your teachers will be
providing opportunities for you to move from the easier and
safer processes of the basement to the first floor and the
penthouse.
Assessment tasks
A response to stimulus exam essay to assess your
understanding of WWII and your historical skills.
A research assignment where you choose your topic within
the area of study - Rights and Freedoms. (Term 4)
A folio of class and homework tasks which can be used as
evidence to show that you have met the achievement
standards for Year 10 History.
The Discovery Diary
You are required to keep either a hand-written notebook or a
creative Word Document for recording notes, hand-outs,
reflections and other material.
This will be stored in your Year 10 History folder.
The Diary will help in your learning but it is also a means of
monitoring and assessing your work habits in History.
History is as much about your responses to what you are discovering
as it is about taking notes and learning facts.
Tasks to undertake now
Create a History folder on your laptop
Create a Discovery Diary for that folder. This might be a
Word Document, Word Notebook Document or folder. It can
be a physical book.

If you cannot use your laptop appropriately for the storing of your
History work, you will be told to keep the Discovery Diary as a physical
book.
While it is better to have a special book, you might allocate part of a
five-subject book for History notes.
