APPLICATION OF BINDER
COURSE
It is desirable to lay bituminous concrete
layer over a bituminous base or binder
course. A binder course of bitumen is
applied at 6.0 to 7.5 kg per 10 sq.m area,
tis quantity may be increased to 7.5 to 10
kg for non!bituminous base.
PREPARATION AND PLACING OF
PREMIX
It is prepared in a ot mi" plant of a
required capacity #it te desired quality
control. $e bitumen may be eated upto
150 % 177 deg & and te aggregate
temperature sould not differ by over 1'
deg & from te binder temperature. $e
ot mi"ed material is collected from te
mi"ture by te transporters, carried to te
location is spread by a mecanical paver at
a temperature of 1(1 to 16) deg &. te
camber and te tickness of te layer are
accurately verified. $e control of te
temperatures during te mi"ing and te
compaction are of great significance in te
strengt of te resulting pavement
structure.
ROLLING OF THE BASE COURSE
A mi" after it is placed on te base course
is torougly compacted by rolling at a
speed not more tan 5km per our.$e
initial or break do#n rolling is done by *
to 1( tonnes roller and te intermediate
rolling is done #it a fi"ed #eel drum
roller or by vibratory compactor roller of
15 to )0 tonnes . te #eels of te roller
are kept damp #it #ater.
$e number of passes required depends on
te tickness of te layer.
QUALITY CONTROL OF
BITUMINOUS CONCRETE
CONSTRUCTION
$e routine cecks are carried out at site to
ensure te quality of te resulting
pavement mi"ture and te pavement
surface.
+eriodical cecks are made for,!
oAggregate grading
o-rade of bitumen
o $emperature of aggregate
o $emperature of paving mi" during
mi"ing and compaction.
At least one sample for every 100 tonnes
of te mi" discarged by te ot mi" plant
is collected and tested for above
requirements. $e variation in te
tickness allo#ed is 6mm per '.5m lengt
of construction.
FINISHED SURFACE
$e .ituminous concrete surface sould be
cecked by a ).0 m straigt edge. $e
longitudinal undulations sould not e"ceed
