Write a targeted application

The main reason writing an applica-
tion is to be invited for an interview.
That is why it is important that your
application is tailored to the specic
job you are applying for you should
never reuse applications that you have
sent to other companies.
You need to know as much as possible
about the job, the company and the
business they are in before you write
your application. To nd this
information you can go online,
contact the company or talk to
people who are familiar with
the company or their industry.
The person who is reading
your application receives many
applications each day. Your ap-
plication should therefore not be
more than one page.

How you can structure
your application:
Motivation: why are you apply-
ing for this job?
Relevant experience: do you
have any (working) experi-
ence which is relevant to the
position you are applying for?
Describe how your experience
and qualications match the
qualications mentioned in the
advertisement.
Education: describe your edu-
cation briey mention only
the relevant information for the
employer. Describe subjects and
skills you have obtained during
your education.
Personality: what kind of an
employee and person are you?
Danish employers are very inte-
rested in your personal skills.
End the application with a
few lines about the job you are
applying for and remember to
write your contact details.
Write an accurate CV
Always attach a CV to your application.
This CV and your application should sup-
port each other do not just repeat the same
information.
A CV is meant to give a short overview of
your qualications and experiences. Person-
nel managers spend, on average, one minute
reading a CV. Therefore it is important that
your CV only contains information that is
relevant to the job you are applying for.
Employers are interested in your back-
ground and experience to be able to judge
your potentials for a specic job. You should
therefore describe each job function in
detail: Which tasks did you have? Which
Responsibilities? Did you work in teams or
on your own? Etc.
There is no nal recipe for how to structure
and present a CV, but most people arrange
it either chronologically (with the new-
est experience rst) or by skills. It should
contain standard elements, such as personal
information, short overview of competen-
ces, work experience, education, courses
and training, organisational experiences,
languages, IT skills, hobbies and references.
Your CV should not be more than 2 pages.
Your CV should be clear and well struc-
tured in order to give the reader a good
overview of your skills. Get someone to read
your CV thoroughly before you submit it.
A second reader can help make the content
more precise and correct errors that you
have missed.

Prepare for the job interview

The main reason for a company to
invite you for a job interview is to nd
out whether you are the right person
for the job. To make sure the interview
goes as well as possible and you make
a positive impression, it is important
that you are well prepared. The more
you know about the company, the job
and your own strengths and weaknes-
ses, the more condent you will come
across in the interview.
Start your preparation by rereading
the job ad, your application and CV.
Find out as much as possible about the
company, its products and services,
nancial situation and management
style.
Prepare relevant questions about the
company regarding its strategy, orga-
nisation and values. Also ask questi-
ons about the job itself: conditions of
employment, working hours, typical
tasks, areas of responsibility, forms of
collaboration, etc.

Good to know
A large number of vacant positions in
Denmark are never posted publicly.
These positions are lled via personal
contacts (network). A good approach to
job seeking is thus to actively use your
network to nd out about potential
workplaces as well as sending unsoli-
cited applications, which is very com-
mon in Denmark.
After sending an application or talking
to a possible job contact, make sure to
follow up on this contact. If a company
turns you down, ask them about the
prole of the person who actually got
the job as well as you should ask them
to evaluate on your application, CV and
maybe give you some good advices on
how to nd a similar job.
