6th Sunday of Easter
Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ
Ma. Rosario Rote-Tejada
I
am the Living Bread that
came down from Heaven;
whoever eats this bread will
live forever; and the bread that I
will give is my flesh for the life of
the world. (Jn 6:51)
We celebrate today the
Solemnity of the Most Holy Body
and Blood of Christ.
After Adam and Eve were
driven out of Paradise because
of Sin, God promised to send
a Redeemer to save the world.
This is no other than His only
Begotten Son, Who died for our
sins to restore our dignity as
children of God. His passion
death and resurrection is
commemorated in the Most Holy
Sacrifice of the Mass, wherein
during the Consecration, the
bread is transformed into
the Body of Christ and the
wine into His Blood to be our
spiritual nourishment. We are
encouraged to keep ourselves
in the State of Grace so that we
may partake of this Meal that
nourishes our souls.
We are all members of the
Mystical Body of Christ. Each of
us has a task to perform to keep
this Body going or make this
Body accomplish its mission.
Just like our human body,
each part has its function. What
happens if a certain part of our
body is not fit or healthy to do its
job? This is where pain comes
in. We get sick.
We have to rest or get
ourselves treated to restore it to
its fit state. We have to take care
of our body; we have to keep it
healthy. We must refrain from
vices and bad habits if we are to
Let Change Begin with Me
Let Change Begin with Me
preserve our health.
In our own families and
communities where all are
members, we have a duty to keep
ourselves attuned with the rules.
To these, we are all members.
These were made to make us live in
harmony with one another. These
would also guide us to realize the
purpose of our existence.
What happens if one of the
members of our community
is sick? This is not far from
happening. Sickness here would
not only mean physical sickness
but would also include sickness in
any of mans dimension social,
spiritual, moral, psychological.
Each of us must be conscious
to keep ourselves good, in all
dimensions of our person, and
thereby become a good member or
part of our community.
As members of the Mystical
Body of Christ, we have to start the
change in ourselves.
This year, to celebrate the
Solemnities of the Corpus Christi
and the Sacred Heart of Jesus, our
Parish held the Magagmay nga
Kristianong Katilingban Day or
MKK Day on June 21, 2014. This
is one example wherein each
individual person, as one member
of the community, is valuable and
important in the realization of our
Parish Vision and Mission.
We want peace? Let peace
begin with me. We want love? Let
love begin with me. If we demand
that people respect us, we should
respect ourselves first.
So, let us keep ourselves good
and healthy to build a good and
healthy community. All these must
begin with you and me.

Indi ka magpatay! (Ex. 20:13; Dt. 5:17)
J
une is traditionally dedicated to the
Sacred Heart of Jesus. The Catechism of
the Catholic Church says, Jesus knew
and loved us each and all during his life...
For this reason, the Sacred Heart of Jesus,
pierced by our sins and for our salvation...
rightly considered the chief sign and symbol
of love with which the Divine Redeemer
continually loves the eternal Father and all
human beings without exception (478).
The Sacred Heart devotion took many
forms among the laitys prayer-life from
the Morning-Offering, monthly First-
Friday Masses, Family-Enthronements,
Eucharistic-Adorations, consecrations,
reparations, and novenas.
Origin
This devotion became popular in the
17th century in France when a Visitandine
nun, St. Margaret Mary Alacoque
received visions of the Sacred Heart.
With the guidance and help of St. Claude
la Colombiere, a holy and experienced
missionary-priest, the devotion spread
beyond borders and was approved by the
Church.
Sacred Heart & the Popes
Holy Father Pope Francis recently said
the Heart of Jesus is the ultimate symbol
of Gods mercy but it is not an imaginary
symbol, it is a real symbol, which represents
T
he Solemnity of the Corpus Christi or
the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ
reminds us of two important things.
First, the Real and the Substantial Presence
of Christ in the Eucharist; and second, the
Church as the Mystical Body of Christ.
Our absolute belief that Jesus is
sacramentally present in the Holy Eucharist
can form and influence, by Gods grace, our
attitudes and behavior when we are in the
Mass or when we are inside the Church. Jesus
is no ordinary person, and in knowing and
believing that He is truly with us in the Mass,
we thereby learn to show reverence and
respect to Him, and we do this by maintaining
the atmosphere of silence andprayer. We show
gestures of respect like making the Sign of the
Cross upon entering the Church, genuflecting
before sitting in the pews we have chosen and
kneeling when it is about proper to do so.

of us get distracted because of using our

Referring to the Sacred Heart devotion,
Pope Emeritus, Benedict VXI believed that,
When we practice this devotion, not only
do we recognize Gods love with gratitude
but we continue to open ourselves to this
love so that our lives are ever more closely
patterned upon it. God, who poured out his
love into our hearts through the Holy Spirit
Who has been given to us (cf. Rom 5: 5),
invites us tirelessly to accept His love
Holy Father-turned-Saint, St. John Paul
II mentioned that In the Heart of Christ,
mans heart learns to know the genuine and
unique meaning of his life and of his destiny,
to understand the value of an authentically
Christian life, to keep himself from certain
perversions of the human heart, and to
unite the filial love for God and the love of
neighbor.
A Loving Invitation
Devotions and other forms of pietys
primary role is to draw the laity back to
the Liturgy of the Church (Holy Eucharist
and the Sacraments). The Devotion to the
Sacred Heart is loving and gentle invitation
that calls us back to the Sacrament of
Reconciliation and subsequently, Sacrament
of the Eucharist.
Referring to the Sacrament of
Reconciliation, the Catechism says: The
Lord Jesus Christ, physician of our souls
and bodies, who forgave the sins of the
paralytic and restored him to bodily health,
has willed that his Church continue, in
the power of the Holy Spirit, his work of
healing and salvation, even among her own
members (1421).
According to the Catechism ... the
sacrament of Reconciliation with God,
brings about a true spiritual resurrection,
restoration of the dignity and blessings of the
life of the children of God, of which the most
precious is friendship with God (1468)
From the Sacrament of Reconciliation,
the Sacred Heart of Jesus urges us to partake;
at the Lords table; The Sacrament of Holy
Eucharist.
Catechism says The Eucharist is the
source and summit of the Christian life.
For in the blessed Eucharist is contained
the whole spiritual good of the Church,
namely Christ himself... and according to
Catechism [1331] by this sacrament we
unite ourselves to Christ, who makes us
sharers in his Body and Blood to form a
single body (1324)
In this month of June, as we fervently
offer our prayers to the Sacred Heart of
Jesus may our faith, hope, and love deepen
and make us faithful partakers of the
Sacraments and active participants of the
Liturgy of the Church through love of the
Sacred Heart.
not urgentwhen many of us have utilized
the Church as a place of dating the
challenge is on us, ministers, to evangelize
even more our people that they should
believe in the Real Presence of the Lord
in the Eucharist; and the challenge is also,
correspondingly, on the faithful to be more
open and humble in order to learn that
this fundamental value of reverence and
respect becomes today even more urgent,
necessary and important.
As Mystical Body of Christ, we realize
that despite our uniqueness and diversity, we
are still one body under our one Head, Jesus
Christ. As one body, we are interconnected.
We have a relationship!
I wonder howhealthy this Body of Christ is!
In our parish life, we may not have
become consistent in making our ministries
sustainable. We have our own share of ups
and downs.
Recently, we have been confronted with
scandals in the Church. The faithful in some
parishes are divided. There is a lack of dialogue
between the priests and the parishioners.
For some government officials, there is
a lack of oneness in promoting the common
good because of some selfish interests. Graft
and corruption is still prevalent.
Abroad, conflict and violence continue
to persist in Syria and in other parts of the
Middle East and many more
If we are conscious of our own health
as an individual, that we would do some
exercise when we feel that we are gaining
weight or that we would buy and take some
medicines when we feel that we are getting
sick, do we also take time to think and feel
how healthy is this Body of Christ and do
something when this Church where we
belong is not in good shape?
As wehaveconcretelyfelt andexperienced
Christs presence in the Eucharist, may we
bring His presence wherever we go. We cant
remain numb. As we have a relationship
with one another, all of us are affected by our
actions. May we not bring harmto this Church
we love but rather bring good in order that this
Church, the Body of Christ, will be holier and
healthier as God desires it to be.

O
n June 26 the Church celebrates the
liturgical memorial of Saint Josemara
Escriva. This celebration takes on a
special significance in the Year of the Laity
in which the Church reminds ordinary
Filipino Catholics: You have been called
to be saints; you are sent forth as heroes!
Can ordinary people be saints?
The traditional notion is that holiness
was primarily the call of a select few, such as
priests or nuns. As for lay people, holiness was
commonly associated with participating in
Church rituals such as novenas, processions,
etc, or by their working in the Church, as in
the case of lay ministers.
The traditional setup was prevalent
within the Church when in 1928 a 26 year-
old priest, Josemaria Escriva, experienced
a vision for a mobilization of Christians
disposed to sacrifice themselves with joy for
others, sanctifying every upright work.
On October 6, 2002 St. John Paul II
declared Msgr. Escriva a saint. On that
occasion, the Pope said: St. Josemara was
chosen by the Lord to announce the universal
call to holiness and to point out that daily life,
or ordinary activities, is a path to holiness.
One could say that he was the saint of
ordinary life. In fact, he was convinced that
for those who live with a perspective of faith,
everything is an opportunity to meet God,
everything can be an incentive for prayer
Holiness is truly within everyones reach.
Everyone called to holiness
In his homily on love for the Church, St.
Josemaria said: As Christian faithful, priests
and lay people share one and the same
condition, for God our Lord has called us to
the fullness of charity which is holiness...
There is no such thing as second-class
holiness... God invites everyone; each person
can become holy in his own state in life.
St. Josemaria, the founder of Opus Dei,
which means Work of God, saw that it was
possible for us to become saints, not in spite
of our daily work, but precisely through it,
whatever it happened to be, from engineers
to construction workers, from doctors to
teachers, from students to cooks to house
helpers, etc.
The secret to holiness
To fulfil such arigorous mission -St. John
Paul II explains St. Josemarias teaching- one
needs constant interior growth nourished
by prayerwhich he considered to be an
extraordinary weapon to redeemthe world.
He always recommended: in the first place
prayer; then expiation; in the third place, but
very much in third place, action. It is not a
paradox but a perennial truth: the fruitfulness
of the apostolate lies above all in prayer and
in intense and constant sacramental life. This,
in essence, is the secret of the holiness and
the true success of the saints.
The Solemn Mass for St. Josemaras
feast will be held on June 26, 2014, 6.15
pm, in the National Shrine of Our Lady
of Candles (Jaro Cathedral) where St.
Josemarias image is venerated. For

ast June 14 and 15, the
Ministry of Readers had a
Seminar for New Lectors and
Commentators and an Updating
for the old members. This was
facilitated by the Jaro Archdiocesan
Commission on Liturgy.
Fr. Julius Almeria was the
resource person during the first
day. He asked the old lectors how
they have grown in their spiritual
life and howhad God work in them
as proclaimers of the Word of God.
Fr. Almeria explained that
Liturgy is a public worship which
our Redeemer as Head of the
Church renders to the Father. As
Christians, we have to participate
and be involved in the life of
the Church. As lectors, we have
to perform our duties fully and
faithfully, aware that we are
proclaiming God Whom we are
serving, so we are called to give
our best. He further, said that our
Liturgy here on earth is only a
foretaste of the Liturgy in Heaven,
and thus before proclaiming the
Word of God, let us pray and reflect
on howthe Word of God affects us.
Liturgy is a source of ones sanctity,
it deepens our growth spiritually
and as lectors we must be willing to

the constant updating of our

Last June 18, at 5 to 7
oclock in the evening, Fr. Joenick

his weekly input to all parish
school catechists. He discussed
the Theology of the Body. On this
session, he discussed about its
historical background.
The updating was attended
by 15 catechists. This activity was
held at the Candle Light Office.

On the second day, Mr. Ramon
Astorga talked about the qualifications
of a good reader. He also talked about
concrete techniques for public reading
and others. According to him, one of
the most sensitive ministries is the
Ministry of Readers. A reader should
be a man or woman of prayer and
has established a special intimacy
with Christ. As the reader serves an
important liturgical role inproclaiming
the Word of God, it is necessary that
he or she not only be suited for the
task, but also prepares himself/herself
carefully for the service to God and the
Church. Thedignityof thetasknaturally
requires that readers reflect exemplary
conduct and receive a certain amount
of education. Mr. Astorga recommends
that a reader should read his/her
readings one week before, have it
duplicated and read it several times,
reading silently toget the thought, then
practicereadingorally. He/Shecanalso
practice reading before a mentor who
checks the phrasing and pronunciation
of names of persons or places in the

He added that COMMITMENT is
very important, so with TIME.
If many things pre-occupy
you, never be a reader. A speaking
style of the reader that is audible,

The best use of inflection, pause,

careful preparation and training.
Knowledge of the literary forms
of a passage is prerequisite for
good reading. It is necessary to

Check the microphone, watch the

the microphone is working, scratch
it gently once with your fingernail
butdont bang it. There were more
reminders given us by Bro. Ramon.
Practicum followed for those

une 18, 2014. Pope Francis started
a new cycle of catechesis on the
identity of the Church and its role
in the world. He emphasized that the
Church is not an NGO, or even a private
entity. Furthermore, he said the Church
is not synonymous with the Vatican or
even with priests.
People say, The Church says.... But
we are all part of the Church. Who are you
referring to? Priests? Yes priests are part
of the Church, but we are all the Church.
Dont limit it to priests, bishops or even to
the Vatican.
He went on to explain that the

ATICAN CITY, June 20, 2014 (Zenit.
org) - Pope Francis is affirming
that to truly be satisfied, only one
type of food is required: that of the Lord.
In his Corpus Christi homily
Thursday evening in the courtyard of
St. John Lateran, Pope Francis spoke
about what the faithful must eat and
must avoid in order to be spiritually
nourished.
In the Eucharist, the Pope said, the
Lord communicates a love so great that
He feeds us with Himself, with a selfless
love, always available to every hungry
person in need, which gives renewed
strength. To live and experience the
faith, means allowing the Lord to feed
you, Francis reflected.

different religious beliefs go through harm
and pain that cannot easily be repaired.
Lets not forget that Jesus was a refugee.
He had to flee to survive, along with St.
Joseph and Mary. They went to Egypt. Jesus
was a refugee. Let us pray to Our Lady,
who understands the pain of refugees, so
that She may be close to these brothers
and sisters.
Before starting the audience in the
Square, the Pope greeted and blessed
the sick, indoors for about an hour. There
were plenty of selfies, hugs and even
some tears, like in this case, where a
father sees his son greet the Pope.

Some faithful spoke to ZENIT
about Francis decision not to walk the
Eucharistic Procession. Some Italian
faithful said that although they enjoyed
when Francis walked in the procession
last year, they respected his decision not
to do so, adding it is important he knows
his limits.
A priest from Mexico, who has been
living in Rome for more than 20 years,
told ZENIT that it was a true act of
humility. He added that Francis, is just
like any other faithful, as he is following
the Lord the best he can. If he is not in
the position to followhimon foot, he will
do so by car. He reflected on the strong
example Pope Francis sets for priests.

Church is much more than just an institution.
He described it as a community of God, that was
started by God.
Usually it was mankind who called on the
divine, to try and reduce the distance. It called for
support and protection. People prayed to gods and
divine symbols. But in this case, something incredible
happens. Its God who takes the initiative. Lets focus
on this, ok. Its God Himself who calls on Abraham.
He then added that its through the Church that
God shows His love for mankind.
Since June 20th is World Refugee Day, the Pope
also asked for prayers and concrete help for those
who are forced to flee their countries.
Refugees from different countries and from
He cautioned against trying to nourish oneself
with material things, which only give a facade of
satisfying, but do not. The Pope warned against
numerous food offerings that are not fromthe Lord,
such as money, success, pride and vanity.
These material goods give the false appearance
of satisfaction, but only corrupt, he noted.
Rather, for our spirit and growth, the faithful
need to receive the reality that does not perish: the
gifts of God, his Word and his Body, he said.
Upon completion of the Mass, thousands of
faithful participated in the traditional Eucharistic
Procession. They walked along Via Merulana to the
Marian basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore. The Pope,
as was announced earlier Thursday, decided not to
walk this year, but instead traveled by covered car
to the Piazza of Santa Maria Maggiore, where he
closed the procession by giving Benediction.

C
hristianity in action is now actually
making strides academically and
morally in many educational
institutions. Beside from the University of
the Philippines, the University of San Agustin,
the West Visayas State University, the Central
Philippine University, and other big colleges
and schools, there are some elementary
schools that are gaining fast in their effort to
plant the seeds of values in the hearts of their
pupils and their parents.
I was resting at home last Monday when
the son of our neighbor, a grade II pupil, went
to my son, who is an instructor in English and
asked to teach himwhat Christianity in action
means. What a surprise he gave me. I know
that many schools are teaching this subject,
but for a grade II pupil to insist on a detailed
explanation is something surprising.
After lunch, I went to his mother and
requested her to accompany me to her sons
school because I was interested in knowing
the subjects in their curriculum. It was not
difficult to meet the school officials. His
Rev. Msgr. Alejandro P. Esperancilla gave
us an interesting and meaningful overview of
the history of the Church in his session with
us last June 6, 2014. He enumerated to us
the reasons why we should study the Church
History as quoted fromTimChallies.
1. God Tells Us So
In the Bible, if you cannot remember you
commit sin. God commanded the Israelites to
remember His deeds of the past, therefore,
festivals and ceremonies were instituted.
2. To Understand Today
To viewthe faith of today in reference to
the long storied history of the Churchwill help
us avoid sins and mistakes committed in the
past.
3. To Understand Tomorrow
When we understand where our current
trends are taking us, we can react to avoid
heading down paths that have been shown to
be ruinous.
4. To Understand Providence
When we study the past, we can see
many of the ways in which Gods Providence
has been displayed. This is valuable teaching
tool as we prepare to face trials in persecution
in our day.
5. To Understand Error
The history of the Church is a
history of actions and reactions. Much of
Christian Theology has been developed and
strengthened in reaction to error and heresy.
Example, excesses in popular devotions
such as relics and images.
6. To Understand People
By studying history we can come to
know and understand special persons in the
Church; the lives of saints, the life and times
of reformers, and the specific people who
lived in a period of history.
7. To Understand Endurance
We see menand womenwho persevered
throughout the history of the Church and we
are strengthened with endurances.
The pillars and monuments of the
past serve as constant reminders of Gods
faithfulness. They serve to increase our faith
and they reassure us that as God has acted in
the past, He will act in the future.
The session of Msgr. Andy concerning
the History of the Church enables us to
reflect that we belong to the true Church, the
Roman Catholic Church. This was founded by
our Lord Jesus Christ, whose truth, beauty,
goodness and order were handed down to
His apostles, to the Holy Popes, to the bishops,
to the priests and to the Catholic faithful,
the People of God. That through the Sacred
Scriptures, Oral Traditions and Sacraments,
these truths are still pure and alive, moving
through and in us in the past, the present
and the future. This makes us happy, proud
and confident that we have a firm, solid
foundation, rich and valuable heritage as
Catholic Christians, in guiding and directing
our journey towards eternal life.
teacher offered to accompany me to the

The school is the Sacred Heart of Iloilo,
located at the Felix Gorriceta Avenue, Balabag,
Pavia, and more rooms are being added to
the building. Mrs. Marilyn B. Mendoza, the
Principal, introduced me to Mr. Roberto B.
Sabellano, the School Director, and Mrs. L.
Sabellano, the School Directress.
Mrs. Mendoza informed me that aside
from academics, Christian Living is included
in the curriculum of the Pre-School kids,
Christian Living and G.M.R.C. (Good Manners
and Right Conduct) in the elementary, and
Christian Living and Values Education in the
High School.
They are nowbuilding a chapel adjacent to
the school because they want their pupils and
their families to be devoted followers of God.

that Ill bewillingtoandif theywant, I couldalso
help in giving Values Education Seminars. In
fact in my JournalismClasses in Print and Oral
Journalism, I always include values. Whenever
I am asked to write declamation and oration
pieces, I also include values.
How wonderful this world would be if
Christianity will be translated into action. We
will not live forever, so let us plant rosebuds
while we may.
Nowif otherlearninginstitutions continue
propagating values in their curriculum, it will
not be long before the clouds of insecurity and
fear vanish fromthe Philippine skies.
This move, is only asking us to participate
in the process of transformation and reform, to
lend a hand to those who need us, to erase the
vices and crimes fromthe map of our existence
and live only in the garden of Gods love.
Let us pray to the Holy Spirit for an
understanding of our faith, the knowledge of
the purpose of our life here on earth and the
wisdomto use the gifts God has given us.
As our schools raise high the banner of
hope, let us wave the flaglets of brotherhood
and love, of peace and our desire to reside in
the heavenly Kingdomwith God, our Father.

Tips for
Growth
THINGS TO DO DURING PRIVATE
EUCHARISTIC ADORATION
F
r. Benedict Groeschel points out
in the book, In the Presence of
Our Lord : The History, Theology
and Psychology of Eucharistic
Devotion that there are four kinds of
prayer most appropriate in the presence
of the Eucharist, namely adoration and
praise, thanksgiving, repentance and
trusting intercession. Accordingly, here
are suggestions for what to do during
private Eucharistic adoration.
1. Pray the Psalms or the Liturgy of
the Hours
Whether you are praising, giving
thanks, asking for forgiveness or seeking an
answer, youll find an appropriate psalm. The
ancient prayer of the Church called the Liturgy
of the Hours presents an excellent way to pray
throughtheBookof Psalms throughout theyear.
2. Recite the Jesus Prayer
Say Lord Jesus, have mercy on me, a
sinner, repeatedly as you quiet your heart
and mind.
3. Meditate using Scripture
Choose a passage fromthe Bible. read the
words and ask God to let the passage speak
to you. Pay special attention to anything that
strikes you and ask God what He wishes for
you to drawfromthat message.
4. Read the life of a saint and pray with
himor her
Most holy men and women have had a
great devotion to Our Lord in the Eucharist.
Therese of Lisieux, Catherine of Siena,
Francis of Assisi, Thomas Aquinas, Peter
Julian Eymard, Dorothy Day. Mother Teresa
of Calcutta and Baroness Catherine de Hueck
are just a few. Read about themand pray their
prayers before the Blessed Sacrament.
5. Pour out your heart to Christ and adore
Him
Speak to Jesus, aware that you are in His
presence, and tell Him all that comes to your
mind. Listen for His response. Pray the prayer
that St. Francis instructed his brothers to
pray whenever they were before the Blessed
Sacrament: I adore You, O Christ,
present here and in all the churches of
the world, for by Your holy cross You
have redeemed the world.
6. Ask for forgiveness and intercede for
others
Think of those who have hurt you
and request a special blessing for them.
Ask God to forgive you for all the times
you have neglected or hurt someone
else. Bring before the Blessed Sacrament
all those who have asked you to pray
for them. Ask the Lord to address their
concerns.
7. Pray the Rosary
Pope John Paul II reminds us, ...is not the
enraptured gaze of Mary as she contemplated
the face of the newborn Christ and cradled
him in her arms that unparalleled model
of love which should inspire us every time
we receive Eucharistic communion? (The
Church and the Eucharist, 55) Ask Mary to
join you as you gaze on Christ in the Eucharist
and as you pray the Rosary.
8. Sit quietly and just be in the presence
of God
Think of a visit to the Blessed Sacrament
as coming to see your best friend. Sit quietly
and enjoy being in each others company.
Instead of talking to the Lord, try listening to
what He wants to tell you. (http://www.uga.
