1. Introduction

Education is a natural, harmonious and progressive development
of mans innate power.
- Pestalozzi
The teacher knows that efficient learning depends upon the learners
ability to schedule his time, plan of his study, the habit of
concentration, the habit of reading etc. Very often the teacher comes
across such students who have above average scholastic aptitude, high
aspiration, yet they show poor performance in reading. Such students
have faulty reading habits i.e. such students do not read with a
purpose, they read aimlessly .they do not given attention to the
meaning when they read, they have poor vocabulary, incorrect
pronunciation and so on. Proper guidance to them, is expected, and to
change their reading habits into desirable ones.
Good reading habits have been found to influence adolescent
career aspirations. during adolescence , individual begin to plan for
their future career by considering a number of occupational choice
.counsellors , parents & educators may be better able to assist
adolescence in their exploration of occupational options, help them
seek career related information. Although childrens initial career
preferences may have consisted of fantasy choices, adolescents may
begin to narrow their occupational choice as they gain a sense of what
is realistic as a future occupational. So if the reading habits are made
an important part of the early childhood experiences etc. So if reading
habits are made an important part of the early childhood experiences
of a child then definitely till he reaches adolescence he will be able to
decide and plan his career on the basis of knowledge which he gained
through continuous reading habits.
Reading ability has been regarded as an activity which involves the
comprehension & interpretation of ideas symbolized by written or
printed language. Although a number of studies were done on the
factors affecting the reading ability.
Importance of problem
The importance of this study is to make everybody aware of the need
of good reading habits and how good reading habits help higher
secondary students in selecting a career which will suit their
personality and interest .the student read for relaxation from more
severe studies , he is thus refreshed and his spirit s are revived.
The importance of reading good authors those who in all
respects make a good impression upon a person. So good reading
habits help an individual to shape his personality and decide his
nature and career as a whole.

VARIABLES OF THE PROBLEM
Any measurable attitude to object things or beings is called variable
There are two types of variables:
1 > Independent variable - Reading habits of secondary students.
2 > Dependent variable Occupational aspiration of Sec.school
students.

STUDY OF RELATED RESEARCH

In the present the studies have been classified into two broad groups:
INDIAND STUDIES
FOREIGN STUDIES
STUDIES ON READING HABITS
INDIAN STUDIES
G .Lokanadha Reddy, R.Ramar &L.P Balam(2007-2008)-
The present experimental study was undertaken with two
objectives in view (i) to develop multimedia based modules for
XI std. Physics subject, and (ii) to measure the effectiveness of
multimedia based modular approach with special reference to
failure syndrome students. The obtained result shown that
multimedia based modular introduction on the achievement of
failure syndrome students in teaching physics.

Gul Mathur & Prachi Sharma (2007) A study of career
maturity among adolescents. The result showed that the boys &
girls have average level of career maturity. Significant
difference was found between boys and girls in attitude towards
career choice. The result showed that both boys and girls had
equal level of career competency.

unfavourable attitude of girls regarding dowry. Study suggests
the curative and preventive intervention to get rid of this evil.

Megha Gakhar (2006) A study of significant difference in the
academic achievement of physiotherapy students due to the
different learning style, thinking styles and study skills. The
result revels that academic achievement of students did not
differ significantly due to their performance of learning style,
thinking style and study skills.

FOREIGN STUDIES:

Muratgeldi Soyegor (2010) - The present study is on The
investigation of the reading habits of the fourth final year
students at the faculty of education, Ulaodg University. The
finding of the research source shows distinctive result, the
teacher candidates based on their foreign language divisions also
very in their habits of reading.

Mustafa Talas (2007) - This paper describes an extensive
reading program conducted in three rural secondary or middle
schools in Malaysia, aimed to motivating the students to read
extensively in English and helping them to overcome their
problems.

Florida department of education (FDOE) (2004) - A educational
areas use difficult & complex text, the responsibility for teacher
is to reinforce reading strategies of all subjects, including career
and technical education.

Lynch 2002, Ferguson 2001, Sanchez 2003, Graetz 2003.
Instruction of reading strategies has been shown to have a
positive effect on reading comprehension & motivation.

Alexender & Kulikowich (1991), Cresson 1999, Digiri 1993 ,
Kim , Vanghav (1994) found that students reading difficulties
are compounded by the diversity and complexity of reading
materials encountered in career & technical educational course.

Delimitations and area of problems.
The delimitations of the study are:-
The study would be delimited by the following considerations-
1 > This study would be conducted only on higher secondary students
Class XI
th.
2 > The sample was drawn out from the secondary school of Raipur
city only.
4 > The study is limited to secondary schools .
5 > This study is limited to the honesty of students in filling the
questionnaire given to them.
6 > This study is limited to students of English medium higher
Secondary schools.
7 > For this study , the standardized test , i.e. study habit inventory by
M.N Palsane and A.Sharma and occupational aspiration scale by
Dr.Grewal is used.
8 > Both boys and girls are taken for the study.

Objectives of study

They are
To study the impact of reading habits of high occupational
aspirants and low occupational aspirants of higher secondary
schools.

To study the impact of reading habits of high occupational
aspirants, boys and girls of higher secondary schools.

To study the impact of reading habits of low occupational
aspirants, boys and girls of higher secondary schools.

Hypothesis
A hypothesis is an attempt of explanation a provisional
supposition made in order to explain scientifically
According to Good & Hatt
A hypothesis states what we are look for. A hypothesis looks
forward .It may prove to be correct or incorrect.

H
01
: There exists no significant difference in the reading habits
of high occupational aspirants and low occupational
aspirants of higher secondary schools.
H
02
: There exists no significant difference in the reading habits
occupational aspirants, boys & girls of higher secondary
schools.

H
03
: There exists no significant difference in the reading
habits of high occupational aspirants, boys and girls of
higher secondary schools.

RESEARCH PROCESS
The term research consists of two terms Re + Search. Re means
again and again and Search means to find out something new. Thus
research is a process in which a person observes the phenomena again
and again and collects the data and on the basis of that data he draws
some conclusions.
(i) Research method:
Descriptive survey method was followed in this study to know the
impact of reading habits on occupational aspirations of higher
secondary schools of Raipur city.
Population:
Population is an aggregate of items processing a common traits or
trait.

(ii) SAMPLING METHOD:
The total no. of schools available was 20 and out of these schools, 4
schools were selected randomly. Total numbers of students available
were 1150 and out of these 152 students were selected.
(iii) SELECTION OF TOOLS:
1 > Reading habits of secondary school students by M.N Palsone and
S.Sharma.
2 > Occupational aspiration scale by Dr. J.S Grewal.

Statistical analysis:

After collecting the data, the collected scores were then converted into
raw scores. So after grouping of the data, 5 hypothesis are formed and
accordingly 5 tables are formed and the mean and standard deviation
for every table is calculated with the help of mean and standard
deviation of each hypothesis, t-value for each hypothesis is then
calculated.
The formulas used for this are:-

(i) Mean was calculated by using the formula-

M=

Where = sum total of raw scores of reading habit test.

N= number of scores

(ii) Standard deviation was calculated by the formula-

SD =

Where

SD = standard deviation

the sum of squared deviations for the mean

N = number of scores

(iii) The t-value is calculated by
