This Competition is linked to the Board of Studies syllabus and focuses on the following curriculum
outcomes;
4.1 Practice - A student uses a range of strategies to explore different artmaking conventions and
procedures to make artworks
4.2 Conceptual framework - a student explores the function of and relationships between - artist -
artwork - world - audience
4.3 Frames - a student makes artworks that involve some understanding of the frames
5.1 Practice - a student develops range and autonomy in selecting an applying visual arts
conventions and procedures to make artworks
5.2 Conceptual framework - a student makes artworks informed by their understanding of the
function of and relationships between artist - artwork - world - audience
5.3 Frames - a student makes artworks informed by an understanding of how the frames affect
meaning.
We are looking for original and outstanding examples of artworks made by Visual Arts (year 7-10)
students exploring the theme of Our Place. As an individual, interpret an icon. Using an art style
that you feel represents your town or suburb, create an artwork of a local or Australian icon. An icon
can include people, buildings, natural formations, landscapes. How do you recognise an Australian
landscape? What elements make your choice unique? How would you represent Our Place or Your
Place? Consider these in your art.
Entries can be presented as:
Drawings, Illustrations, Photos, Painting, Printmaking, Collage, Mixed Media, Cartoon imagery or
other Visual Art imagery: Hard copy entries must be no larger than A3.
Digital design, fash fles, screen savers, shock wave, games, E-cards and other interactive
applications: Electronic entries must be no larger than 500K if supplied as a Flash fle, on a CD-
ROM.
Support the fnished artwork by providing a small folio of material that represents the development
of ideas behind your fnished piece. This could include newspaper articles, photographs, and
initial sketch ideas.
Students MUST provide an Artists Statement about their piece providing background and an
explanation of the selected subject (max 50 words).
Your entry should include;
A project title 1.
An artwork mounted for display purposes of maximum size of A3 (60 x 60cm including mount) or 2.
no larger than 500K supplied as fash fle on a CD ROM.
A folio or support material outlining the development of the work may include preliminary 3.
sketches and primary material or excerpts from a visual arts diary (maximum 2 A4 pages)
A completed entry form attached as well as the students name and school clearly marked on 4.
the back of the artwork and securely packed to withstand postage/handling. All entries must be
received by the National Trust of Australia (NSW) by Friday 11th May 2007.
Judging Criteria
The Competition will be judged by a panel of education experts and National Trust subject specialists.
Judging criteria is as follows;
A maximum of TEN ENTRIES from each school class (i.e. the top entries as selected by 1.
the teacher) are to be submitted to the National Trust for further judging in the Competition.
Please note, that although only these top entries from each school will be offcially judged, all
participating students receive a Certifcate of Merit
The fnished artworks/works on paper must address the subject convincingly 2.
The artworks/works on paper must be based on original research 3.
The statement should be clear and concise. 4.
