To begin with, what is salt? The chemical formula for salt is NaCL. Sodium chloride
(another name that salt goes by) consists of 40% sodium and 60% chlorine. It has low toxicity, it
is non-flammable, and it is made up of cube-shaped crystals. Reports done by the American
Heart Association, Diabetic Associations and the CDC have all shown that the effects of sodium
can be terrible on the body and in some cases it can cause death over a long period of excessive
exposure over time. It is not so much that a single serving one or two days a week will kill you,
but over time the bad habits of consuming too much salt will have an effect on the body. A
person should not cut out salt altogether because salt controls our bodily fluids, and it controls
the way our muscles and nerves work. Our bodies can actually speak to us regarding our salt
levels. For instance, when we have too much salt we get thirsty and need a drink. The body uses
sodium to control blood pressure and blood volume. The normal adult value for sodium is 136-
145 mEq/L.
Too much sodium has a tendency to start a negative chain of reactions within the body
that could sometimes lead to death. High sodium can lead to high blood pressure which can lead
to heart attacks or strokes. Too much sodium can cause swelling or bloating of the extremities.
This is primarily because the kidneys are responsible for eliminating salt from the body, and if
there is too much salt, the kidneys cannot eliminate it fast enough and you will get fluid
retention. The fluid retention is also capable of building around the heart. This will cause the
heart to not be able to beat and function properly.
The latest 2014 statistics according to Heart.org show that most Americans eat more than
twice as much sodium than what is recommended consuming more than 3,400 milligrams per
day. According to the American Heart Associations Epidemiology & Prevention/Nutrition,
Physical Activity & Metabolism Scientific Sessions in 2014 they found that overweight
teenagers who consume way too much sodium show signs of faster call aging within the body. In
the study, 766 people 14-18 years old were divided into the lowest or highest half of reported
sodium intake. Low-intake teens consumed an average 2,388 mg/day, compared with 4,142
mg/day in the high-intake group. Both groups consumed far more than the 1,500 mg/day
maximum (about 2/3 teaspoon of salt) recommended by the American Heart Association.
