1.1 GPRS HISTORY
The history of mobile communication started about 40 years ago with analog
networks and large, heavy phones that were only affordable for very few people.
This was called the 1st generation (1G) of mobile communication.

At the end of the 1980s, the introduction of second generation (2G) digital networks
such as GSM transformed mobile communication into a truly global mass media.

Nowadays, life without mobile phones is almost unthinkable.
Although originally designed for voice calls, the future of mobile communication will
lie more and more in the world of data transmission. This includes sending and
receiving photos and videos, and the use of mobile Internet based applications.

As the 2G infrastructure is not suitable for fast data transmission another generation
has had to be introduced. UMTS is the 3rd generation or 3G, and has been
specifically designed for transmitting data at high speed.

Intended as a bridge from 2G towards 3G-Networks, GPRS (the General Packet
Radio Service) was introduced to overcome the data bottleneck of 2G-environments.
A GPRS transmission network can be used by both 2G and 3G networks. Hence,
GPRS is generally categorized as generation 2.5.
GPRS makes the Internet and other data services fully available to mobile users.

Higher transmission rates

Higher transmission rates, provide better, faster access to the Internet, for example
when accessing the Internet directly from your mobile, or using your phone as a
modem for your laptop.
GPRS enables fast transmission of MMS to and from the user a real benefit,
especially if they include large files such as videos or high resolution pictures.
With GPRS, downloading ring-tones, logos, music, videos or games becomes fast

Charging flexibility

GPRS provides a much more flexible way of charging:
Prior to GPRS, mobile Internet access was possible only via low data rate dial-up
connections. These were very expensive as you were charged according to the
connection time. This is called "time oriented charging".
GPRS transfers data in small blocks called "packets". The network counts the
amount of data in these packets so you only pay for the amount of data you send or
receive. This is called "volume oriented charging".

Always on

The "always on" feature means the phone is permanently connected to the GPRS
network, so there is no need for a time consuming 'call set up' when you need to
make a call or send a message.
This is also true for Internet sessions. Slow 'dial up' services are a thing of the past.
New services, such as real time messaging, can now be provided.

Improved applications and services

GPRS improves existing applications and services not only with the better transmission
rates and charging flexibility, but also with other possibilities:
Location based services for example provide the possibility to search for information
about nearby restaurants, banks, hotels or other important sites.
With GPRS a lot of things become more comfortable such as mobile online banking or
playing games via the network.

2.1 GPRS NETWORK

The current standard for mobile networks is GSM.
In the year 2004 more than 1.2 billion users were registered with GSM operators.

Classical phone networks were designed principally for voice communication. To
access the Internet you have to establish a dial up connection via an Internet Service
Provider - ISP. The maximum data rate in GSM is restricted to only 9.6 Kbit/s,
compared to a theoretical maximum of 171.2 K/bit/s with GPRS.

GPRS provides a direct connection to the Internet and therefore bypasses the
restrictions imposed by the design of voice networks.
To do this, additional equipment is introduced into the mobile network which allows
direct packet-data connections to the Internet via the Internet Service Providers.

In classical phone networks, one call is transported on a connection called a "circuit".
One circuit has to be set up for each call. This is called "circuit switching".
This connection is reserved exclusively for the full duration of the call.
In data networks, the way information is transported is called "packet switching". The
single data packets travel through the network individually, in much the same way as
letters traveling through the postal system no connections are setup.

2.2 GPRS RADIO INTERFACE


In GSM, each antenna has a fixed number of channels which can be used to serve a
fixed number of phones. During a circuit switched voice or data transmission, one
channel is allocated to one phone for the duration of the call. The voice or data is
transported in this single dedicated channel.

In GPRS, one or several channels of an antenna can work as data channels. One
data channel can be allocated to more than one phone. This works because each
data packet can only be received by a certain phone. So although several phones
can listen to one data channel, each phone may only take its own data packets from
the channel - the packets for other phones are ignored. To make data transmission
faster, each phone can use more than one data channel in this way.

Because channels are only used for the time needed to transfer the data packets,
operators charge the user for the amount of data transferred.This is the "volume
oriented charging" described earlier.

Higher transmission rates per phone are achieved by the parallel usage of several
data channels.
All the mobile phones connected to the same antenna have to share the capacity
provided by the available transmission channels.
This means that the maximum available data rate can also depend on the number of
subscribers using the network.
The maximum number of channels will also depend on the phone model used.

2.3 MULTISLOT CHANNEL

The data transmission channels between the antenna and the mobile phones are
separated into two types:
Channels that transport data packets from the phone towards the network are
called "uplink channels".
Channels that transport data packets from the network towards the phone are
called "downlink channels".

GPRS provides transmission rates of 9.05, 13.4, 15.6 and 21.4 Kbit/s for each data

Nowadays most available phones support multislot class 10, which allows a
maximum of 5 channels to be used in parallel.
The user can have 2 uplink and up to 3 downlink channels, or 1 uplink and up to 4
downlink channels.


Depending on the quality of the radio interface and the maximum data rate supported
by the antenna, your class 10 phone can receive up to 21.4 Kbit/s on each channel.
This gives you a maximum of 85.6 Kbit/sec on 4 channels.
The same rate on the two uplink channels gives you a maximum of 42.8 Kbit/sec.

3.1 RADIO NETWORK


Mobile networks are separated into two parts:

The Core Network enables connections to be set up network internally, voice
calls and data packets to be transported, and provides access to other
telephone networks and the Internet
The Radio Network enables subscribers to access the Core Network from their
mobile devices

The Radio Network consists of Base Station Controllers (BSCs) and Base Stations
(BTSs).


When upgrading an existing GSM network to support GPRS, no major changes are
necessary in the Radio Network. A software upgrade in the Base Stations and a
single new module in the BSC are all that is required.

3.1 CORE NETWORK

GPRS requires a new Core Network which can handle data packets in the same way
as the Internet.
The new network elements are the
Serving GPRS support node SGSN, and the
Gateway GPRS support node GGSN.


The SGSN manages the data traffic of all GPRS users in a certain geographical area.
It ensures that GPRS provides the same freedom of movement for data users that
GSM users have with voice calls.
Important SGSN functions include: the authentication of subscribers, storing of
charging information, and encrypting the data connection with the mobile.


The GGSN is the gateway between the GPRS network and the Internet.
