Dyslexia

In 1884, Professor Dr Rudolph Berlin who is an ophthalmologist invented the term

dyslexia. his was a term used to name all the symptoms, whi!h are asso!iated with
language learning pro"lems. here are many different explanations for the term dyslexia
as s!ientists are learning more and more a"out this disa"ility. But still they have not "een
a"le to arrive at one spe!ifi! definition for this !ondition. he #orld $ederation of
%eurology has defined dyslexia as &' disorder manifested "y diffi!ulty in learning to
read despite !onventional instru!tion, ade(uate intelligen!e and so!io)!ultural
opportunity.&
*!ientists +now that dyslexia o!!urs due to the wor+ing of the "rain. R,I Imaging
te!hni(ues have shown that people who have dyslexia have less a!tive parts of the "rain,
whi!h help in reading and understanding languages. People having dyslexia have a "rain,
whi!h wor+s differently when !ompared to other !hildren. his ma+es all the signals get
mixed up. he eyes and the ears also fun!tion in a different manner.
Dyslexia is a learning disa"ility, whi!h is mainly asso!iated with reading and writing.
-ne out of every five !hildren is found to have dyslexia and this !ondition is normally
diagnosed after the !hild is found to have many pro"lems while learning in s!hool.
.hildren with this pro"lem have emotional pro"lems and very low self)!onfiden!e and
this pre!ipitates the fa!t that they are finding it diffi!ult to learn things. %ormally people
who have pro"lems while reading and writing are !onsidered to "e less intelligent when
!ompared to others. But people who are dyslexi! have many other talents and they !an
ex!el at many other things, whi!h are diffi!ult for most people who !an read and write
well.
People learn things from their surroundings. hey try to use many different +inds of
things. hey tal+ to other people and wat!h what they do and also try to imitate
something, whi!h someone else does. ' lot of things !an also "e learned through the
radio, television and other su!h media li+e films. ' lot of +nowledge !an also "e gained
"y reading "oo+s. But dyslexi!s find it diffi!ult to learn through "oo+s. here are many
different levels of disa"ility when it !omes to dyslexia. he print media is spread all over
the world today. People who find it diffi!ult to read find it diffi!ult to !arry on with their
everyday lives. Resear!h into dyslexia will help in developing !omputer programs, whi!h
will help in aiding people who find it diffi!ult to read and write.
Dyslexia is a !ondition, whi!h a person is "orn with and this !ondition is li+ely to exist
throughout the life of the person. -ne out of every five people is affe!ted "y dyslexia and
8/0 of the !hildren who have learning disa"ilities have dyslexia. he main symptoms of
dyslexia are the diffi!ulty to re!ogni1e words. *pelling words is more diffi!ult than
reading them. Pro"lems with short)term auditory and visual memory, !o)ordination,
motor a!tivity and hand eye !o)ordination are li+ely to exist. Pro"lems in reading o!!ur
due to diffi!ulty in visually understanding the writing on the paper. %ormal reading and
tuition a!tivities !annot "e used in treating dyslexia. .ognitive mental training is needed
for this. 2xhi"ition of any of the a"ove mentioned symptoms should trigger a warning
signal in the parents.
.hildren who have dyslexia find it diffi!ult to !on!entrate and they easily forget
anything, whi!h they have learned. hey !an only read very slowly and they sometimes
have a tenden!y to mix up letters li+e B and D. hey might read and write the letters of
different words in the wrong order. hey !an only spell words a!!ording to the
pronun!iation. hey have a poor handwriting and they !an only write slowly. hey find it
diffi!ult to write and express them and they also have to struggle with mathemati!al
pro"lems. hey la!+ !o)ordination and they (uite often ma+e a mess.
' lot of resear!h is "eing !ondu!ted into the auditory and visual physiology pro"lems,
whi!h are asso!iated with dyslexia. People are trying to ma+e out exa!tly how dyslexi!s
!an hear different sounds. hey need to +now whi!h parti!ular sounds are !ausing the
maximum !ompli!ations. hese findings are "eing used to devise many different +inds of
treatment programs for the dyslexi!s in order to ma+e them understand spee!h a lot
"etter. Dyslexi!s have a different visual understanding and this one of the reasons as to
why their eye !ontrol is different from others. Dyslexi!s are normally very good in
drawing and painting "ut they find it diffi!ult to understand printed words.
