DETAILS:

On Monday, April 23
rd
, 2012, at approximately 2306 hours, the 911-dispatch center received numerous phone calls of
shots being fired in the area of NW 3
rd
Street and NW D Street, in Grants Pass. Patrol Officers were in the area checking
for the source of the shots when 911-dispatch center received a call from Three Rivers Community Hospital (TRCH)
regarding a male who suffered a non-life threatening gunshot wound to the left leg. The male was later identified as
Ronald Canepa. Officers who checked the area did not locate any suspects. During subsequent investigation, Detectives
identified Daniel C. Hlavinka J r., and Barney A. Clem as suspects in the shooting.

On 4-27-12, patrol officers attempted to stop a vehicle in which Daniel Hlavinka was a passenger. Officers recognized the
driver as Tyler Collins. The vehicle turned into the J ade East Apartments located at 820 NE D St. and both Hlavinka and
Collins jumped out and fled the area on foot. Officers subsequently located a chrome colored handgun in the area which
was later identified as being stolen. The firearm matched the description of the one which was used in the shooting of
Canepa.

On 4-30-12, with the assistance of the GPDPS SWAT team, Hlavinka was arrested inside a residence at 402 NW 2
nd
St.
in Grants Pass. He was lodged at the J osephine County jail for Robbery I, Assault I, and Unlawful Use of a Weapon.

On 6-11-12, GPDPS officers located Barney Clem at the intersection of NW C and NW Booth St.. He was subsequently
arrested by Detectives and lodged at the J osephine County J ail for Robbery I, Robbery II, Unlawful Use of a Weapon, and
Hindering Prosecution.

Through their investigation, Detectives identified Tyler Collins as a participant in the robbery and shooting of Ronald
Canepa. Through investigative leads, Detectives learned that Tyler Collins was staying at 198 SW Lewis Ave. in
apartment A. Detectives conducted surveillance and confirmed that Tyler Collins was in apartment A. Detectives
obtained a search warrant for 198 SW Lewis Ave.. Due to the serious nature of the shooting and robbery, the GPDPS
SWAT team was activated to assist with the search warrant service.

On 11-2-12 at approximately 0950 hrs., the search warrant was served by the GPDPS SWAT team with assistance from
RADE and Parole and Probation officers.

During the search warrant, a GPDPS SWAT member was forced to shoot an aggressive Pit Bull which was endangering
SWAT team members while they were searching the apartment. The dog was transported by GPDPS personnel to a
local Veterinary Clinic but did not survive its injuries.

Tyler Collins was located hiding in a secret compartment within the apartment. He was challenged by GPDPS SWAT
members and subsequently taken into custody without incident. He was lodged at the J osephine County J ail on the listed
charges.

During the search warrant, Courtney Davis, Tammi Rice, and J ason Rice were arrested for Hindering Prosecution for their
role in helping Tyler Collins to avoid apprehension.

Christopher Tyler was located at the address and arrested for probation violation. He was lodged at the J osephine
County J ail.

No law enforcement or citizens were injured during the search warrant. Anyone with information regarding the robbery
and shooting is requested to contact the GPDPS Detective Division at 541-450-6260.
