Creating Personal Positioning Statements

As a business professional and graduate student, you will be called upon to defne
yourself to others every day. A Personal Positioning Statement also known as an
elevator pitch creates a clear and vivid picture of who you are and what you
have to o!er to potential employers. "t helps you present yourself e!ectively and
position your capabilities in the mind of the listener.
Where can I use my statement?
At networking events# receptions, dinners, and pre$interview gatherings when
meeting people for the frst time
At interviews to respond to the %uestion &'ell me about yourself&
(hen introducing yourself to company representatives over the phone
Positioning Statement Guidelines
Your positioning statement is a way to introduce yourself professionally. These
guidelines apply to all positioning statements:
Make it clear and concise. )hallenge yourself to edit the statement so you
can present yourself in under a minute. "t*s best to develop a short +,-$second.
version for introductions as well as a longer +/$minute. version for interviews
and e0tended conversations.
Always relate your statement to the person with whom you are
speaking. 1ocus on the frm, the industry, or the position you are seeking.
Speak in the present tense. Place both yourself and your profession in the
present, i.e. &" am a marketing professional with three years* e0perience in the
pharmaceutical industry.&
State your interests clearly. )ompanies are looking to hire individuals who
are focused and know what they want. 2ou may choose to e0press why you
want to work in a specifc functional area or why you want to work for the
specifc company. &" am interested in working for )ompany 324 because it is a
leader in wireless technology.& &" am interested in brand management based on
my e0perience in advertising and market research.&
State your expertise and unique strengths. Articulate those individual
%ualities that di!erentiate you from others in your feld. 2ou may emphasi5e a
particularly deep +and marketable. technical knowledge, an e0ceptional
approach to problem solving, or some other specialty or focus. 'aking the time
to locate and verbali5e the professional strengths you have developed will set
