Helpful Hints for the Reading and Language Sections of


the AHSGE
In re-ea!ining the standards tested on the AHSGE" I#ve !ade a fe$ observations that I
$ould li%e to bring to &our attention' (lease read the follo$ing docu!ent carefull&' You
!a& find that the infor!ation $ill be helpful to &ou as &ou plan instruction to enable &our
students to pass the Reading and Language sections of the AHSGE'
Reading
)' About * of the reading tested on the AHSGE co!es fro! tetual and functional
reading NOT literature that is t&picall& found in a literature or reading tetboo%'
+aterials !a& need to be created for practice for this part of the test'
,o &ou have a plan in &our school that addresses this issue? ,o teachers of disciplines
other than English reali-e that their content fits this part of the reading section of the test?
.' AHSGE standards II-)/) states that a student !ust be able to recogni-e the 0!ain
idea1 in a passage' Evidentl&" 0!ain idea1 is a prett& broad concept' According to this
docu!ent" 0!ain idea1 could include any of the follo$ing/ the topic" sub2ect" the!e"
central thought" !essage" lesson" !oral" thesis" author#s purpose" or point of vie$'
,o &our students recogni-e and understand this vocabular&?
3' Although $e teach a plethora of literar& ter!s according to the Alaba!a 4ourse of
Stud&" according to AHSGE standards II-./3" the only ones that are tested on the ea!
are the follo$ing/
theme, character, tone, setting, mood, plot, analogy, and literary point of view
According to the sa!e standard" students don#t have to label or define these ter!s" but
the& !ust be able to anal&-e the!' 5or ea!ple" a student !ight not have to recogni-e
the definition of 0setting1 as a particular ti!e and place" but he !ight have to ans$er a
6uestion about ho$ the setting of a passage influenced the outco!e' 7f course" he $ould
have difficult& in doing this if he didn#t %no$ $hat a setting $as to begin $ith'
8' According to AHSGE standard III-3/." the t&pes of figurative language tested on the
AHSGE include only the following/
simile, imagery, metaphor, personification, hyperbole
Again" students !ust anal&-e the use of the ter!s" not define the!' Ho$ever" it $ould be
difficult for a student to anal&-e so!ething $hich he could not define' 5or ea!ple" a
student !ight be as%ed a 6uestion about ho$ h&perbole contributed to the hu!or in a
passage' He $ould have to %no$ that h&perbole $as an eaggeration before he could
ans$er the 6uestion'
9' The AHSGE $as developed before the advent of $idespread technolog&' So!e of the
reference !aterial tested on the ea! !ight be unfa!iliar to students' +an& students
!a& not currentl& use the Readers Guide to Periodic Literature or hard cop& versions of
al!anacs and atlases: ho$ever" according to standard ;-8/)" these are sub2ect to being
tested' Students !ust also be able to use a dictionar& <not spell chec%=" a print
enc&clopedia" and both print and electronic based card catalogs'

ea!ple" I-III/E indicates that students $ill have to recogni-e correct sub2ect-verb
agree!ent $hen an indefinite pronoun is the sub2ect'
