When t = 0, When t = 1,
v = 60(0) + 20 v = 60(1) + 20
= 20 = 80
(a) From the graph,
(i) The acceleration of the car in the first hour
v = 60t + 20
= 60
A = 60 ms -2
(ii) The average speed of the car in the first two hours
Average speed =
=
= 55km/h
(b) (i) The position of the graph above the t-axis shows that the car travels to its
destination.
(ii)The position of the graph below the t-axis shows that the car is going in the
opposite direction, i.e. travels back to where it comes from.
(c) Method 1 Area under the graph
Area A =
(1)(20 + 80)
= 50 km
Area B =
(80)(0.5 + 1.0)
= 60 km
Area C =
=
( )
= [
+ 20t ]
= [ 30t + 20t ]
= [ 30 (1) + 20 (1) ] [ 30 (0) + 20 (0) ]
= 50
Hence, the distance travelled is 50 km.
Area of B =
= [ 80t ]
= [ 80 ( 1.5 ) ] [ 80 ( 1.0 ) ]
= 40
Hence, the distance travelled is 40km.
Area of C =
=
( )
= [
+ 320t ]
= [ -80t + 320t ]
= [ -80 ( 2 ) + 320 ( 2 ) ] [ -80 ( 1.5 ) + 320 (1.5) ]
= (-320 + 640) ( - 180 + 480 )
= 20
Hence, the distance travelled is 20km.
Area of D =
=
( )
= [
+ 400t ]
= [ -80t + 400t ]
= [ -80 ( 3 ) + 400 ( 3 ) ] [ -80 ( 2.5 ) + 400 ( 2.5 ) ]
= ||
= 20
Hence, the distance travelled is 20km.
Area of E =
=
( )
= [ -80t ]
= [ -80 ( 3.5 ) ] [ -80 ( 3 ) ]
= -40
= ||
= 40
Hence, the distance travelled is 40km.
Area of F =
( )
= [
-640t ]
= [ -80t 640t ]
= [ -80 ( 4 ) 640 ( 4 ) ] [ -80 ( 3.5 ) 640 ( 3.5 ) ]
= -1280 (- 1260 )
= - 20
= | |
= 20
Hence, the distance travelled is 20km.
The total distance travelled by the car is
50 + 40 + 20 + 20 + 40 + 20 = 190km
(d) On our journey to a new restaurant in Putrajaya, our car moved with an initial
velocity of 20km h and reached its final velocity which is 80km h in 1 hour. Our
car then moved at a constant velocity of 80km h for 0.5 hour to reach point P.
The car moved at a constant deceleration for 0.5 hour and stopped at point Q,
which meant we reached the restaurant already. After having a pleasant lunch for
0.5 hour, we continued our journey from point R by making a U-turn and
accelerated constantly at a velocity of 80km h. The car moves at a constant
velocity of 80km h for 0.5 hour and then it moved at a uniform deceleration until it
stops at the 4
th
hour. We reached back home safely with our satisfied stuffed
tummy.
PART 3
(a) Since the parabolic satellite disc is symmetrical at the y-axis, the curve y = f (x)
can be written as y = ax + c. It can be seen that the curve y = f (x) cuts the y-axis
at the point (0,4) . Substitute (0,4) into y = ax + c and you will get y = ax + 4.
Substitute the point (4,5) into y = ax + 4
5 = a (4) + 4
a =
y = f (x) is now written as y =
x + 4
So, f (x) =
+ 4

When x = 2.0, f(2.0) =

When x = 2.5, f(2.5) =

When x = 3.0, f(3.0) =
