Introduction
The efforts of the Media Education Series of TBCMP was divided into two major tasks:

1. Module making and development

2. Media Literacy Seminar-Workshops and Orientation/Philippine Media Set-up
Awareness Seminars/Social Communication Courses

Aside from these efforts, we are also happy to cite to you some of our major programs
not under this grant but is strongly continuing through the help of the Order of Carmelites in the
Philippines and other local partners. In this way, you will see the extent of TBCMP services to
other sectors.

TBC-MP maintains the following core programs:

informants among leaders in Basic Christian Communities. This research was
conducted in 1999.

Other studies include:

1. Philippine Media: Trends, Issues and Needs

2. Impact of Media and Communication in Selected Rural and Urban Areas

Film Dialogue – is held every 2nd Saturday of the month in the Titus Brandsma

encourage dialogue among the viewers on the films’ content and ‘spirituality’ and
on how the film relates to one’s own spirituality or meaning of life.

Media Literacy Education – conducts series of training and workshop in groups,

communities, parishes and schools throughout the country.

Spiritual Retreat and “Open Space” Encounters – a venue and opportunity for
media practitioners to take a break, reflect on the Word of God thru Lectio
Divina, moments of silence, listen to each heart’s desires and share the varied
faith experiences.

Networking – maintains a network of Catholic press and communicators

(Philippine Church Communicators Network- PCCNet) and conducts special
forums on societal issues hounding both the Church and Media. Other networks

Community-Media Education Series

Seminars-Workshops offered by TBCMP has a distinct feature of combining orientation

and skill building – Media Awareness, an introduction to Philippine Media Set-up and Church’s
efforts on Social Communication. This seminar/lecture is more on the orientation level to get a
basic knowledge of the social landscape-situation and how media has become the principal
mediator of reality to man, likewise, its impact to the people. It is important that the people in
the communities and TBCMP will have common understanding in the way see both media and
the Church’s role.

Workshops and training are focused more on the planning of activities for the media
education training program of the parishes and formation houses we have serviced. They were
also called to be active, but critical audiences by helping them in deconstructing media content
through films and other medium. They were given tips on how they can cultivate analytical,
critical thinking as audiences.

The Media Literacy Education Program or MLEP ensures the effectivity of the
lectures/seminar-workshops by developing modules and offering them to different
schools/colleges/universities, seminaries/formation houses and lay communities. We develop the
module according to the needs of the school/seminar or the community. Also, we develop a
module that integrates two of the important concepts– Media and Spirituality. Also, Film
Dialogue as a new concept has been developed as a technique and a tool for responsible film
viewing.

In the approved community-media education series, we have developed a general module

on Media and Evangelization specifically for parish workers, catechists, lay and church leaders
and BECs with specialization on the five courses we have mentioned in the proposal:
5

1. Media and Evangelization: “Impact of Media and Communication in the Life of

the Basic Ecclesial Communities (BEC)”
2. Media and Evangelization: “Formation of Local Media Educators: Media and the
Bible”
3. Media and Evangelization: “Lay Leadership and Media”
4. Media and Evangelization: “Impact of Media in the Works of Evangelization”
5. Media and Evangelization: “Community Alternatives against the Influence of
Media”

Below are the other Course Titles of the modules TBCMP is offering:

1. Media and Spirituality through Film Dialogue

2. Introduction to Film Dialogue
3. Media and Spirituality: The State of Philippine Media and the Challenges of
Social Communication towards Evangelization
4. Church and Communication: Context and Challenges
5. Media and Evangelization
6. Basic Journalism Course: A Focus on Media Critique and Analysis

characters. (The seminarians are given the chance to preach, it is a part of their curriculum
