Wish Vs hope for realistic vs hypothetical situations in the present

Language is a reflection of reality. Choosing between language items like wish or hope is
a matter of things being true (real) or unreal (untrue). For example when we say something
like the sky is blue the language we use to express that idea responds to the fact that
were speaking about something that is real: the color of the sky is blue. The same happens
with our expectations, desires and wishes, sometimes they are true and sometimes they
are not. In this kind of situation, context (reality) determines the kind of language we will
use.
It is 01:00 p.m. You are at the airport
waiting for your sisters plane to land. You
need to be back at the office at 02:00
p.m. You think:

I hope her plane is on time means that the possibility of her plane being on
time isreal.

But you could also think:

I hope her plane is not late

I hope her plane is not late means that
the possibility of her
plane NOT being late is real.

The situation above shows that there is a high degree of possibility that
some events or situations be possible or real. For this kind of situations
we use the verb hope.

Using wish for unrealistic desires: wishful thinking

Sometimes, however, you may want to speak
about things that are not real or possible,
even more, you may want to express how you
would like things to be, not how they are. This
is called wishful thinking: when you talk
about the way you wish things to be, not the
way they are. In wishful thinking you express
your desire that events and situations
beexactly the opposite of what they are.

Lets see an example of such a situation:

You are in the middle of a blizzard. Youre sitting in front of your window
shivering with cold. This is what you think ...

I wish I were in Florida
