Appendix A

Date: Day 1 Year Level: 6 Lesson Duration: 1 hour

VELS Level: 4

Title of Lesson: Learning about energy

Learning Outcomes and Specific Purpose:
To acquire knowledge about energy in the school and home environment. Children begin to gain an increased vocabulary
surrounding the term energy.

Links to VELS:
Strand: Physical, Personal & Social Learning
Domain: Interpersonal Development
Dimension: Students will work towards building social relationships when working with their partners to complete each
others word searches. By working with different classmates, students can learn how to communicate with different types
of personalities.

Strand; Disciplinary Learning
Domain: Literature and Mathematics
Dimension: Students work towards level 4 Literature by expanding their vocabulary in relation to energy.
At level 4 students will also be able to draw grids efficiently and effectively. They will be able to effectively draw up the grid
in relation to size and dimension.

Strand: Interdisciplinary Learning
Domain: Design and creativity
Dimension: They use a range of measuring, marking, joining/combining techniques to alter materials and
finishing/presentation methods, and operate tools and equipment competently.

Prerequisite knowledge/concept/skills/vocabulary required:
Children have limited prior knowledge surrounding energy in the home. For this first lesson, no prior knowledge is
necessary, as students will be starting from the core of energy. The skill students primarily require is spatial awareness to
complete the task

Grouping/s and Physical Space:
Students will begin sitting on the mat space provided for group discussions. They will then disperse into their tables of four
and work individually for the first portion. Students will then work in pairs with the person sitting next to them.
Equipment/Resources required:
Pencils
Paper
Ruler
Graph paper
Lesson Structure:

Introduction:
Students will begin by sitting on the mat in a circle and asked what is already known about energy and electricity. We will
then discuss a definition of power saving, energy and electricity and have a discussion about why it is important to save
power.

What is energy energy is what is used to perform tasks. It can be found in many different forms including light, heat and
sound. Even our bodies use energy to do things such as walking.

What is electricity - Electricity is created when millions of electrons transfer energy along a wire. Electricity is generated by
using energy from burning of coal and wood, and can also be generated by channeling the power of renewable sources such
as water and solar power.

Renewable energy is a way to use resources that we have that are not going to damage the earth or run out. Resources
such as the sun, wind and water can be converted into electricity. Where have you seen someone using renewable energy?
Perhaps using solar power?

Why do we need to save energy As we use limited resources produce energy or power, using these sources is polluting the
earth and are these are beginning to run out. Once these resources run out they cannot be replaced

Students will then brainstorm words to do with power saving and these will be written on the board.
Some words may include
Sustainability
Power
Energy
Solar power
Renewable energy
Wind power
Water power
Fuel

It will be explained that the students are going to work individually to make a word search using their graph paper. They are
first to rule a 20cm by 20cm grid, spacing the squares 1cm apart. After they have ruled their grid, they are required to
choose ten words from the power saving word list to put in their word search.
This introductory explanation should take about 25 to 30 minutes to complete.

Main component of lesson:
Students will disperse onto their own tables with their paper and rulers. As stated before they are required to make a 20 by
20cm by 20cm grid in order to fit their 10 words in. Students will be required to use coloured pencils to creatively present
their word search when they are done designing it.

Once they have completed their word search they are required to pass it to the person next to them and complete their
partners word search. This should take students about 30 minutes to complete.

If students finish this task quickly, they are required to look up the words in the dictionary and write their definitions in their
dictionary and write the definitions to tell their classmates.

Conclusion:
Students will then sit back on the mat in a circle. They will be required to share their word searches and explain what words
they used differently to their partners. Students will be asked if they can describe what any of the words mean.
Monitoring of Student Learning:
Students learning will be assessed through observation and summative assessment, where I will record how the students
are improving on their knowledge of power saving and share this assessment with parents at the end of the term.
