Apple Lemonade
Perfect for Summer
Lemonade is often associated with refreshment and
hot summer days. When the mercury on the
thermometer has reached record heights, few
beverages are as refreshing as a cold glass of
lemonade.
This summer figures to have its share of hot
afternoons. But while the higher temperatures might
be typical this time of year, your choice for
refreshment can be anything but -- even if you insist
on sticking with lemonade. The following recipe for
Apple Lemonade from Elsa Petersen-Schepelerns
Cool Smoothies: Juices and Cocktails (Ryland,
Peters & Small) offers a unique take on a summer
favorite.
Apple Lemonade
Serves 4
2 to 3 cooking apples, unpeeled,
chopped into small pieces
Sugar, to taste
Juice of 1 lemon
Sparkling water (to serve)
Ice
Put the apples into a saucepan, cover with cold
water, bring to a boil and simmer until soft. Strain,
pressing the pulp through the strainer with a spoon.
Add sugar to taste, stir until dissolved, then let cool.
To serve, pack a pitcher with ice, half-fill the glass
with the apple juice, add the lemon juice, and top
with sparkling water.

Nau, Cannarella-Lorenzetti Honored At
Conference Room Dedication Ceremony
HARPERS FERRY, W.VA. Te new-
ly renovated residency conference
room at Harpers Ferry Family Medi-
cine was recently dedicated in honor
of two local family medicine physi-
cians who established a primary care
practice in Harpers Ferry 32 years ago.
Rosemarie Cannarella-Lorenzetti, MD,
MPH and Konrad C. Nau, MD were the
guests of honor at an unveiling ceremo-
ny hosted by George D. Harris, MD, MS,
Chair of Family Medicine for the WVU
Health Sciences Center Eastern Division.
Calling the conference room dedi-
cation the continuation of a legacy,
Harris thanked both physicians for
their continued commitment of provid-
ing care to the community for over three
decades. We want to recognize all that
you both have done here in the Eastern
Panhandle as healthcare providers and
educators; your dedication to patients,
education, and community. he added.
Although their clinic time is limited,
Nau and Cannerella-Lorenzetti still see

icine in addition to their faculty and
administrative roles with the WVU
School of Medicine Eastern Division.
Nau serves as an Associate Vice Presi-
dent and Dean, Cannarella-Lorenzetti is

NEXT LABRYINTH WALK SET
FOR JULY 28
KEARNEYSVILLE Hospice of the Panhandle
will continue guided walks of its labyrinth during
the summer months with a scheduled walk on
Monday, July 28 beginning at 7 p.m.
Another meditative walk through the labyrinth
is set on Monday, Aug. 25 Hospice of the Pan-
handles Center for Grief Support members will

uled to begin at 7 and end by 8:30 p.m.
Labyrinths, brick patterns that form a contin-
uous circular path, have been around for thou-
sands of years. In ancient Greece, some 2,500
years ago, labyrinth designs frst began appearing
on coins, pottery and wall etchings. Today, they
are used ofen for meditation.
In addition to the guided walks, Hospices lab-
yrinth will be open to the public daily from dusk
till dawn. It can be accessed from a walkway
outside the inpatient facility, to the lef of the
one-story building as a visitor is looking toward
it. It is located behind one of the two porches at
the inpatient facility.
Hospice of the Panhandles new campus is lo-
cated just of the Short Road exit of W.Va. 9. To
get to the campus, proceed down Short Road to
the Sheetz and turn right at the light. Go about
500 yards. Just across from Food Lion, make a
lef on Hospice Lane. Te inpatient facility is the
frst building on the right.

one of the labyrinth walks, contact Hospices
Center for Grief Support at (304) 264-3902.

We Offer Minor & Major Repairs
Small ways
to make a positive impact
on the environment
Living an eco-friendly lifestyle is a choice
that can pay dividends for years to
come. Future generations and the planet
those generations inhabit can benet
signicantly from the efforts of their
eco-conscious ancestors. But while the
benets of living eco-friendly lifestyles
are substantial and long-lasting, the effort
to initiate such lifestyles need not be so
signicant.
Men and women who want to leave a
healthy planet for future generations can
do so by making a host of relatively minor
adjustments to their daily lives.
Embrace cloth bags. Plastic grocery
bags are very convenient, but they are
not very eco-friendly. Such bags are
often discarded after use, leading to
unnecessary waste, and the effort and
energy it takes to manufacture and ship
such bags is wasteful. Reusable cloth
bags are a much more eco-friendly
alternative to traditional paper or plastic
grocery bags, and these bags can be
taken along on trips to the grocery store
and on shopping trips to the mall or other
retailers. Designate certain bags for the
grocery store and others for shopping
trips to the mall. This can drastically
reduce the energy it takes to produce
and ship plastic bags, especially when
shoppers consider just how many plastic
bags they discard over the course of a
typical year.
Use reusable items. Cloth bags are not
the only items that can be reused. Items
such as paper plates, paper napkins and
plastic cups are often taken for granted,
but these items can only be used once.
Over time, heavy usage of these items
can add up to a signicant amount of
waste for landlls, and the production
and transportation of such items is
signicant and wasteful. Men and women
can reduce this impact by only relying on
reusable items, such as washable plates,
cloth napkins and glass or plastic drinking
glasses. It might mean a few extra dishes
in the sink each night, but the benet of
these products is well worth the effort.
Stop wasting water. Many people,
knowingly or unknowingly, are guilty of
wasting water. Homeowners may forget
to turn off their automatic sprinklers on
rainy days, while many people may keep
the faucet running while brushing their
teeth. Make an effort to reduce your water
usage. Even something as simple as
taking shorter showers in the morning can
reduce your individual water consumption
by thousands of gallons over the course
of a typical year.
Pay it forward. Perhaps the best
way to make a positive impact on the
environment for years to come is to instill
a sense of environmental responsibility in
your children. Explain to youngsters why
youre bringing cloth bags to the grocery
store and why you turn the faucet off
when brushing your teeth. Kids who learn
to live an eco-friendly lifestyle at a young
age will carry that way of life with them as
they grow older, benetting the planet for
generations to come.
How to reduce home
improvement project waste
The home improvement industry has grown
considerably over the last several decades,
as homeowners increasingly took steps to
turn their homes into personal oases. But
such projects often produce substantial
amounts of waste, negatively impacting the
environment as a result.
According to the United States
Environmental Protection Agency, an
estimated 170 million tons of building
construction, renovation and demolition-
derived wastes were generated in 2003, a
year when the housing market was thriving
and homeowners were not shying away
from costly home improvement projects.
With the housing market once again on the
rebound, the home improvement industry
gures to benet once again. There are
steps eco-conscious homeowners can
take to reduce waste while improving their
homes.
Save salvageable materials. Some
materials simply must be discarded when
making improvements to a home. But
many more materials can be salvaged.
When making renovations to a home,
separate materials like lumber, hardware,
xtures, and even appliances that can be
salvaged from those materials that must be
discarded. Many communities are home
to organizations that collect salvageable
materials, and these materials can be
reused by fellow homeowners or other
organizations down the road.
Speak to contractors about recycling.
Contractors working on a home typically
know which materials can be recycled in a
given area. When discussing prospective
projects with contractors, homeowners
can mention their willingness to recycle
materials. Wood is a versatile material
that can be turned into reclaimed or
composite wood products, including decks
or other items used around the home. Old
wood being removed from a home may
even work as mulch, which homeowners
can spread around their yards to add
aesthetic appeal and protect plants on hot
summer days. Even asphalt and concrete
can be recycled into new products, and
homeowners should discuss their wishes to
recycle as many materials as possible.
Choose recycled content building
materials. Another way to reduce home
improvement project waste is to make use
of other homeowners discarded materials.
Recycled content building materials are
products that include materials recycled
from previous projects. These once-sparse
materials are now commonplace, and
labels often include the percentages of
postconsumer and recovered materials
used in each product. Materials such as
drywall, insulation, kitchen countertops,
glass tiles, carpeting and carpet padding
may include recycled content, and the
growing popularity of such products
has made them relatively simple for
homeowners to nd. When working
with contractors, homeowners should
emphasize their desire to use materials
made from recycled content. Such
materials are both pleasing to the eye and
the environment.
Embrace adaptability when designing a
new home. Rarely do homeowners design
their homes with renovations in mind. When
building a dream home, homeowners do
not consider the likelihood that they will one
day move out or even outgrow the home.
Estimates vary considerably with regard to
how long the average homeowner stays in
his home, with some suggesting as little as
seven years. While data collected from the
United States Census Bureau within the
last decade suggests that roughly half of all
homeowners had lived in their homes for at
least 10 years.
Homeowners building new homes should
expect to one day move, and ensuring their
new homes are easily adaptable is both
nancially sound and eco-friendly. When
a home is built with adaptability in mind,
prospective buyers wont have to make
costly overhauls.

Going green can be good
for your health
Maintaining physical and mental health
and adopting an eco-friendly lifestyle can
go hand-in-hand. Many of elements of
going green can benet people looking
to keep themselves healthy. Here are
some ways to go green and benet your
overall health.
Skip the disposable bottled water.
Bottled water may be convenient, but
some estimates suggest that 38 billion
disposable plastic bottles end up in
landlls every year. And thats just in the
United States. In addition, water that is
housed inside of plastic bottles may end
up being contaminated with some of
the chemicals used in the plastic bottle
composition, particularly if the bottles are
left in hot cars or left out in hot weather.
Reusable bottles lled with ltered water
may improve your health and reduce
landll waste.
Pack a lunch. Rather than heading
to a take-out restaurant or fast-food
drive-through, bring lunch to school
or work. You will have greater control
over the foods you include and can
reduce packaging waste in the process.
If you are particularly environmentally
conscious, you can opt for organic and
locally grown foods.
Walk or bike more. The Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention says
that more than one-third of American
adults are obese. The situation is
not much different in Canada, where
obesity and overweight statistics tend
to mirror what is occurring in the United
States. A sedentary lifestyle that leans
heavily on automobiles to get around
may be contributing to these obesity
rates. Skipping the exhaust-spouting
automobile in lieu of walking or biking
around the neighborhood can vastly
improve personal health and the
environment.
Carry reusable tote bags in your purse
or briefcase. When shopping or running
errands, use reusable tote bags instead
of plastic bags. Reusable bags are more
eco-friendly, and carrying nonperishable
items around will give your arms and
body a workout.
Indulge in a glass of organic wine.
Organic wine is made from grapes
grown without synthetic pesticides or
chemical fertilizers. Also, organic wines
should not contain sultes to stabilize
the wine during transportation. Red wine
contains powerful antioxidants known
as polyphenols as well as resveratrol,
which, according to The Mayo Clinic,
has been linked to preventing damage
to blood vessels and helping to reduce
bad cholesterol. Resveratrol also may
help reduce inammation and blood
clotting that can lead to heart disease.
Just be sure your alcohol consumption is
moderate.
Choose organic foods. Organic
foods, or those grown without chemical
pesticides and herbicides, have fewer
chemicals that can harm the body and
the environment.
Get outdoors and turn off your
electronics. Spend several hours or a
day away from the tablet, phone and
computer. Head outdoors and enjoy
recreation in the fresh air. You will get
more exercise and save energy.
Trade for exercise equipment. Look
for swap sites and garage sales to pick
up exercise equipment for less money.
Buying local reduces fuel consumption,
and you might just save a lot of money
along the way.
Enjoy nature to unwind and lose
weight. Head outdoors and relax by
meditating. Some studies have found that
overweight women who performed daily
relaxation techniques lost an average
of 10 pounds after 18 months, without
consciously dieting. Stress may cause a
person to turn to food for comfort.
Since the economic downturn that began
in 2008, many men and women have
placed a greater emphasis on saving
money. Downsizing a home or trading
in that gas guzzler in the driveway for a
more fuel efcient vehicle are two major
ways to save money, but there are many
less drastic choices men and women can
make that not only save money but also
might just save the planet along the way.
The desire to be more eco-conscious is
strong in many people, who recognize
the responsibility they have to protect
the planet for future generations. But
while incentives may not be necessary
to entice people to be more eco-friendly,
there are many ways men and women
can go green and save money at the
same time.
Eat in. Dining out on the town can
make for a wonderful evening.
But when dining out, diners are
often at the mercy of restaurant
owners and chefs with respect
to the ingredients in their foods.
Restaurants can cut corners by
ordering less expensive ingredients
that might be processed or produced
far away, which means they must be
packaged and transported before they
inevitably nd their way onto your plate.
Packaging and transporting products
from afar is not very friendly to the
environment. When eating in, men and
women have a greater amount of control
as to what goes into their meals, allowing
them to choose locally produced foods
and ingredients that did not leave as big
a carbon footprint as foods produced
in distant locales. And dining is nearly
always less expensive than dining out at
restaurants, where the costs of buying
and shipping ingredients are passed on
to diners.
Growing your own
vegetables at home is
one way to save money
and protect the planet at
the same time.
Go green and save money at
the same time

How to go green at the grocery store
While adopting an eco-friendly lifestyle might
seem like a major commitment, many people
nd such an endeavor is far easier than they
initially expected, as some relatively minor
modications here or there can make a
substantial impact on the environment.
One of the easiest ways to go green is to
make more eco-friendly choices at the grocery
store. Shopping for and preparing meals can
be done in an eco-friendly way, and men and
women will be happy to know theyre not only
making changes that benet the planet but
their personal health as well. Here are some
ideas for going green at the grocery store that
do not require a big commitment.
Begin in the produce aisle. When shopping
for produce, stock up on plenty of organic
fruits and vegetables, which are now readily
available at many grocery stores. Stick to
organic for the dirty dozen foods, those
which are the most likely to have high levels
of residual pesticides and herbicides. Even
produce that is not labeled organic may be
organic. To determine if it is, look at the sticker
codes on the fruits and vegetables. A four-digit
code means it was conventionally grown, while
ve-digit codes starting with an eight indicate
genetically modied food. A ve-digit code
starting with nine indicates the item is organic.
While shopping, ask the produce manager
if the store sells locally grown produce, and
purchase only those products when they are
available.
Buy only what you need. Shoppers are often
tempted to go from aisle to aisle, buying items
they both need and dont need. Caving in to
such temptation can be wasteful unless items
purchased have long shelf lives. Before visiting
the store, make a shopping list and stick with
it. Not only will you save money, but you will
avoid throwing out spoiled foods as well.
Purchase store-made items. If youre looking
for deli meats or bread for dinner, visit the
stores bakeries, kitchens and delis, where
employees cook foods right inside of the
supermarket, a practice that cuts down on
shipping of pre-made frozen foods produced
elsewhere. Many stores carry their own
homemade breads, cakes, doughnuts, dinner
entrees, and sandwiches.
Ask questions in the meat department.
Dont be shy about asking store butchers
where the beef and chicken for sale comes
from. If the meat and poultry is not locally
raised and all-natural, look for alternatives in
the store or shop elsewhere.
Shop only the perimeter of the store. Many
stores stock dietary staples along the outer
edges of the store. The interior bulk of the
store contains packaged, processed foods that
are not as eco-friendly.
Buy in bulk whenever possible. Stock up on
staples like toilet paper and other items. Bulk
items are packaged together, which reduces
the amount of packaging needed. Separate
meat and poultry into smaller portion sizes at
home before freezing.
Bring reusable tote bags. Even though
many plastic shopping bags are made from
recycled materials, many of these bags end up
in the trash after use. Reusable cloth bags are
more eco-friendly. Just be sure to wash them
frequently so you clean them of any bacteria
that may accumulate over time.
Eco-friendly shoppers
can focus on organic
items, including produce,
to decrease their carbon
footprints.
Eco-friendly lifestyles
arent just for adults.
Encouraging kids to go
green at a young age can
set them up for a lifetime
of making decisions with
the environment in mind.
The following are just a few
ways parents can impart a
sense of responsibility to
the environment on their
youngsters.
Lead by example. Many
kids try to mimic their
parents behaviors, and moms and dads can take advantage of that by making sure
kids see them as they recycle, conserve water or make other eco-conscious choices.
If kids want to know why youre separating trash or opting for tap water over bottled
water, explain to them the positive impact that such behaviors can have on the health
of the planet.
Encourage eco-friendly hobbies. Todays youngsters have a host of technology
at their disposal, and parents know full well that such access can be both good and
bad. While technology can enhance learning in the classroom and beyond, gaming
systems and other electronic devices have made it easy for kids to forgo outdoor
activities in favor of more sedentary hobbies. Many medical researchers believe that
such hobbies are contributing to higher rates of childhood obesity. But they also can
harm the environment. Gaming systems, whether played on televisions, computers or
handheld devices, use a substantial amount of energy. Parents who encourage more
eco-friendly activities, such as reading or playing outside, can get the best of both
worlds, as kids will be getting out and about and embracing activities that dont harm
the planet.
Ride bicycles more often. Reducing fuel consumption is one of the most effective
ways to reduce your carbon footprint, and even though kids cant drive, that doesnt
mean they cant pitch in to conserve fuel. Children who attend school close to home
can ride their bikes rather than taking the bus or hitching a ride with mom or dad.
Explain to youngsters the impact that such a choice can have on the environment,
and ride bikes with your kids whenever possible, be it on trips to the park or to visit
friends and family members. Many kids love to ride their bikes, and they might like it
even more if they understand the positive impact that such a hobby is having on their
planet.
Teach kids to reuse products. Waste is a signicant environmental issue, but
reusing products is a great way to cut back on waste. Items that would once be tossed
into the trash after serving their purpose can be repurposed when tackling projects
around the house, and kids can get in on the act, too. Rather than purchasing store-
bought decorations for holidays like Halloween or Chanukah and Christmas, reuse old
products to craft homemade decorations. Birthday gifts or items exchanged during the
holidays can be wrapped in old newspaper instead of store-bought wrapping paper.
