1.2 Memory and Performance
While the game will run fine in 256 MB of RAM, your playing experience will be smoother if
you have at least 52 MB of RAM!
Regar"less of how much memory you have, you can maximi#e your available memory an"
increase the overall performance of the game engine by closing any open programs, inclu"ing
system tray programs $li%e &'(), an" by "efragmenting your har" "rive! *ee part 2 of this

+i"os recommen"s that you have no other programs running while playing Thief: Deadly

When playing Thief: Deadly Shadows with less than 611 megabytes $MB) of virtual memory you
may receive low virtual memory warnings! /o avoi" these warnings, please ma%e sure you set
your virtual memory settings to at least 611 MB!

to return to the game, however it may be unstable! We recommen" that you reboot your

Manager while playing!

"rivers ol"er than 'atalyst 0!0! We specifically do not support these "rivers! We
strongly recommen" you use the latest "rivers from the A/& web site!
b! &f you are using multiple monitors on your computer an" you set the secon"
monitor as the ?primary "isplayA using the Cisplay 7roperties control panel, the
game will run on the secon" monitor, but the gamma setting will be incorrectly
applie" to the first monitor! /he wor%aroun" is to select the first monitor an"

c! When using an A/& Ra"eon 3511 or 2211 graphics car", the game>s movies an"

Performance Issues3
! &f the game is performing poorly, try "ecreasing some graphics settings! ,n the !2V
options screen, try "ecreasing the "isplay resolution, sha"owing "etail, lighting cutBoff,
level of "etail, an" turning off light bloom or turning on har"ware soun" mixing!

a! Eight bloom B this is what gives the light a more ra"iant, glowing loo%! /urning

.,/+6 &f you are experiencing excessive ?lights flic%eringA, or repeate" onFoff
blin%ing of lights within the game, then you shoul" "isable Eight Bloom! 'ertain
light sources in Thief: Deadly Shadows are meant to flic%er some, an" this is
normal! Iowever excessive amounts of flic%ering or blin%ing suggest "isabling
the Eight Bloom option!
b! 9sync B /urning this off will increase frame rate slightly, but will cause vertical
textures to JtearH when you rotate!
c! Multisampling B /his is an antiBaliasing option! @eeping this set to will give the
fastest performance!
4! 8sing <Alt=B</ab= functionality to minimi#e an" return to the game may lea" to
instability!
a! <Alt=B</ab= may cause the mouse to be nonBfunctional within menus! 7ressing
<Alt=B</ab= again sometimes corrects this behavior, but can also lea"s to further
instability!
b! &f your computer>s "es%top resolution is the same as the game>s resolution, you
will not be able to use <Alt=B</ab= to switch between the game an" the "es%top!
&f the resolutions are "ifferent, you will be able to switch normally! 8sing <Alt=B
</ab= "uring the movie to switch to the "es%top, shut "own programs an" then
return to the movie will not necessarily help performance!

0! /he intro"uction an" en"game movies may play at less than optimal spee" if there are
programs running in the bac%groun" "uring or 5ust before the movies begin! -or best
movie performance, we shut "own all other programs before entering the game!
Key(oards3
! *ome %eyboar"s, both 8niversal *erial Bus $8*B) an" 7*F2, can cause problems when
you attempt to move Darrett while he is crouching! /his happens because they are not
properly sen"ing %eyboar" events to the operating system! /his issue is not relate" to
Thief: Deadly Shadows! &f you have problems crouching while moving "iagonally in the

game, you may have a %eyboar" with this "eficiency! /o verify, open .otepa" an" hol"
"own the >W> an" >C> %eys simultaneously! While hol"ing these %eys "own, press >;>! &f
an >;> "oes not appear, your %eyboar" is not sen"ing proper messages! /his is a har"ware
issue with the %eyboar" an" cannot be correcte" with software or "evice "rivers! We
have observe" this behavior primarily with Microsoft .atural an" Microsoft &nternet
%eyboar"s, though it may happen with other bran"s an" mo"els! /o wor% aroun" this
problem replace the %eyboar" with one that meets 7' stan"ar"s or remap your inBgame
%eys to a set, which "o not have this issue!

! &f you are using a gamepa" on your 7', you may fin" that not all of your gamepa">s
buttons are assigne" in Thief: Deadly *ha"ows! /his is because there is no stan"ar" set
of buttons on 7' gamepa"s! /o setup your gamepa">s buttons, start Thief: Deadly
Shadows! -rom the main menu, select #$tions, then select In$uts an" assign buttons
normally!

pause menu! 'lic% the bottomBrightBmost button, 4itle Menu! -rom the title menu, clic% 56it to
-es7to$! A confirmation win"ow appears before the game exits!
4! &f your computer has Microsoft Active*ync installe" an" running, Thief: Deadly Shadows will
not loa" any map! /he Main Menu will come up but once you select, tart 8ew 'ame or
attempt to loa" a save" game, the game will crash! Active*ync has no means to close or "isable
the program, so you must change Active*yncHs settings so it "oes not interfere with the game! &n
Active*ync, go into the configuration options an" "isable all connection settings!

"isabling Auto7lay in Win"ows 2111 an" Win"ows ;7 reGuires e"iting the system registry, a
topic beyon" the scope of this "ocument! As an alternative to enabling Auto7lay, you can
manually start autorun in two ways on any version of Win"ows6
! ,pen My 'omputer, "oubleBclic% the Thief: Deadly Shadows 'C or C9C icon, an" "oubleBclic%
the Autorun program!
2! ,pen the *tart Menu, clic% Run! &n the "ialog box that appears, type -3<autorun $where C6 is
