Access to Work
Access to Work are changing the way that Deaf people get support. It is now more
difficult to get the support we need and it does not meet employment needs.
Please help us challenge this.
All we want for Christmas is Access to Work!

MARCH DEAF CLUB
16 members of March and District Deaf Club went to a Christmas market in
Yorkshire weekend by Leger Holidays. On Friday 29
th
November 2013 people
were picked up from March and Kings Lynn and taken to Peterborough bus station.
Then a Leger Holiday Coach picked us up at 11.30am and we went to the
Christkindelmarket German market in Leeds for a few hours. We then went to the
Ibis Hotel for a 3 night bed and breakfast stay. We had dinner altogether in the
hotel later that evening. On Saturday we went shopping in Skipton and visited a
local market. We visited Grassington in the Yorkshire Dales for the Dickensian
Festival. Grassington is a lovely small village with many old buildings. The
Christmas market was very good with lots of interesting things to see. We
returned to the hotel. On Sunday we went to York for the St Nicholas Christmas
Fayre. It was fantastic. Market stalls, food stalls, funfair and a carousel. It was
good day. We went home the next day and we were very tired! Everyone said it
was a great weekend. (See photo in top).
On Friday October 4
th
2013 we had a social evening with games. There wasnt
many there because lots of our members went to EDDJ in Minehead for a holiday,
but we had an enjoyable evening.
We really enjoyed playing Rope quoits and Jenga on Friday November 1
st
2013.
Michael Manchett organized the Rope Quoits. Although it was not easy I managed
to win it. Hoorah! We also played Jenga organised by Pam and Dennis Pope. You
had to be very careful not to make the tower fall. It was hard! It was a draw
between pairs Emma Fordham with David Kettle and Janet Jefferson with Paul
Landford. Thanks to Michael, Pam and Dennis. (See bottom 2 photos above)
32 people came for the Christmas Dinner at the Oliver Cromwell Hotel on Friday
December 6
th

2013. It was a
lovely meal. We
played 3
Christmas games
and had a raffle.
Thanks to
Michael, John and
Elaine who
helped with the
games and raffle.

New BSL Pub meet Cambridge
Paul Langford and I, (Pam Pope), would like to let you know about a new BSL Pub
meet that will be happening. We plan to try out several pubs over the next couple
of months, (Bakers, Tivoli and Golden Hind), then ask those who have joined us
which is their preferred choice. After which we will then organise a regular
monthly pub meet at the preferred venue.
On January 7
th
a group of us enjoyed an evening in the first Pub on the list, The
Bakers on East Road. It was a fun evening with much catching up of Christmas
tales. Lots of others have already contacted me saying they hope to make it to
the other pubs on the list. All three pubs have wheelchair access.
The next pub to try will be at the Golden Hind, 355 Milton Road, Cambridge CB4
1SP on Thursday 6
th
February 2014. At the junction of Kingshedges Road and
Milton Road traffic lights. There is a large free car park accessed off Kingshedges
Road. Food is also served here. Mmmm, yum, chips.
Following that we will be at The Tivoli, 16 Chesterton Road, Cambridge CB4 3AX
on Thursday 27th February 2014. Parking is along the road in front of the pub
and further up along the road in the meter bays which I believe are free in the
evenings. Food is also served here too. Mmmm, yum, more chips.
We hope you will join us and help us choose a favourite meeting place. Come
along, have fun, catch up with friends and make new ones

CHAIRPERSONs REPORT
Happy new year to everyone reading the first newsletter in 2014. I am delighted
to start with good news. In December we were awarded a new contract with the
Council due to the hard work from all of the team at CDA. This means that we
dont need to worry about our basic funding for the next three years and we can
concentrate on continuing to improve everything we do at CDA.
I really enjoyed taking part in helping sign support the Christmas services and I
was delighted when Godfrey told me he understood all of my signing! We had fun
at the Huntingdon Deaf hearing group as well (see Elaines report). We are
relaunching that this year in a slightly different format. See later for details.
I am looking forward to a great 2014

E petition for qualified communication support for Deaf
people
David Buxton states We are asking everyone to sign our e-petition at
http://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/58405 (see BSL video) urging the
government to require all public bodies by law to provide a deaf person with a
registered communication professional should they require it. If we get 10,000
signatures, the government has to respond formally. If we get 100,000
signatures, we can get a debate in the House of Commons about this. Please
sign the e-petition to get deaf people the decent communication support
they need.

Peterborough Deaf Drop in
Peterborough Deaf Drop In has set up a Face book group page to share our
information and photos. Our room has moved from JH2 to H11.
In October: Qadeers Hussain visited and talked about his Marathon Run
fundraising for Peterborough and District Deaf Children Society.
Every one was happy and pleased with Ruth Golden's talk about the new Advocacy
service to D/deaf people in Peterborough. Everybody asked questions and are now
aware of the differences between Sensory Services support and Advocacy. Some
people put their name down on the waiting list for Ruths support.
November was busy with planning and shopping for Christmas. Suzanne Foulstone
from Peterborough Deaf Club sold the
tickets for the Christmas party. Also the
PDDI group chose the Imperial Bento for
the Christmas meal.
December 50 people attended the
Christmas meal. Everybody was happy to
see each other and chatted with drinks
before they were enjoyed a delicious
meal. We had 10% discount, 2 different
starters and plenty of choice for the main
meal at Imperial Bento. At the end of the
night everyone went home with a full
stomach and happy memories, I hope!
HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL OF YOU AND YOUR FAMILY- ALL THE BEST FOR 2014

Huntingdon Deaf Lunchtime Group
This small Drop-in group is still going well. We have average attendance of ten
people. We have regular three Deaf Wheelchairs users attending this drop-in. The
Library is a good location because it is near to Bus Station and it is in the centre of
Huntingdon so it is easy for Wheelchair users make their own way without any
support. In September thirteen turned up and in October we had two birthday
celebrations, one for Tony Vanterpool and another one for Marion Gossland. We
brought cakes for them and we all sang/signed Happy Birthday.

Cambridge Deaf Lunchtime Group
Attendance for this group was disappointing as just over ten people regularly
attended this monthly group. We hope to arrange an outing for this group with
other groups later this year. Like all of our other drop-ins, we have Support

Fenland Deaf Drop-in
On 12th December, Christine Tarrant and I arrived at Fenland Deaf Drop in for
Christmas party at The Christian Centre, Upwell road, March at 9.30am. Christine
Tarrant made good sandwiches, sausages rolls, cakes, with help by Terry and
Linda Murray and we opened at 11am.
We started lunch at 12.30pm with cup of tea/coffee and soft drink, after that we
have very good raffle prizes. Godfrey Palmer organised Bingo, very good money
prizes and good fun. I would like to thank Christine Tarrant for organising Fenland
deaf drop in Christmas Party, very happy, lots of laughs and of course Chat!! I
must thank all of you for bringing prizes for the raffle and thank you to Godfrey
Palmer for the Bingo and also Anna Snell for letting us use the big room for the
deaf drop in Party. Everybody enjoyed themselves.
I have now retired from Fenland deaf drop in, Christine Tarrant is now taking over.
Good Luck, and a Happy New Year to you all.

Peterborough Deaf Coffee Morning
I am sure that most of you know that Debbie Powell has been unable to co-
ordinate the coffee morning at Ricos, due to health reasons.
Ann Ratcliffe has been filling in for Debbie on a voluntary basis and reporting back
to her.
It has been good to see the numbers have remained steady. The day that Debbie
was well enough to come to the coffee morning, it was so lovely to see a large
number of people turn up to see Debbie, and I am sure Debbie was happy to see
everyone as well.
Jamie will now find someone to take over from Ann on a temporary basis for the
time being.
I am sure you all would like to join with me in sending love and good wishes to
Debbie, during this difficult time for her and to wish her back to good health again
soon.
Wishing you all a Happy New Year.

Happy New Year!
I hope you all had a good Christmas. Do you have a New Years resolution? For me,
I will try to not to eat too much food as I do not want my weight to go up again
and also I would be so happy if my beloved Hull City could finish in the top half of
Premier League!
Talking about not putting my weight up, I think it is important to exercise to keep
healthy and recently I got a new Samsung tablet for my Christmas present and
although I enjoyed using it, I realised that I must try not to use it often. You can
see information somewhere in the newsletter that we have set up a new
programme for CDA Social club with various activities, all linked with exercises
and BSL plus any communication to suit for all range of Deaf People. I really hope
this will go well in 2014.
Last early December we have been informed that we have been successful with
the Tender Bid which is really brilliant news for us all. We will be able to provide
Advocacy services in Cambridgeshire for Deaf People as of 1
st
April 2014. More
information will be in the next newsletter.
We are hoping to set up a new Deaf Drop-in at Ely soon for Deaf people in this
area. I will keep you informed.
Also I am hoping we can organise various activities for Deaf Awareness Week in
third week of May this year. Again we will keep you informed and we should be
able to give you lot of information in the next newsletter.

CAMTAD is changing its name to Cambridgeshire Hearing Help

CAMTAD is celebrating 35 years of the local charity by changing its name from 1
st

January 2014 to Cambridgeshire Hearing Help. It has been felt for some time
that our name hampers us from getting instant recognition for what we do and the
people we work for. After a thorough consultation exercise in which we received
many colourful and witty suggestions for the new name we went for a straight
forward one that describes what we do and where we do it.

We now run hearing help sessions in 42 venues in Cambridgeshire. We have
taken over two sessions in Fenland and hope to increase our presence there in the
coming year. At these drop-in sessions volunteers offer advice on any aspects of
hearing loss and maintain NHS hearing aids by distributing batteries and cleaning
and retubing aids. There is also a service to housebound people and those living
in residential care. It is not generally recognised that hearing aids need
maintenance every 3 6 months when the small plastic tube that links the mould
with the mechanical part needs to be replaced to maintain the quality of sound.
By keeping hearing aids in good condition with routine maintenance available
locally, hearing loss becomes a minor inconvenience not a major barrier to
communication. This helps to keep people sociable and makes a significant
contribution to their quality of life. We also offer a telephone advice service, talks,
training and information on hearing help assistive technology.

Cambridgeshire Hearing Help will continue to work with partners. It is by working
together to create a holistic support network that we can protect the vulnerable
people we work for. Some of our volunteers also work for partner organisations
and we are happy to welcome any newcomers on our volunteer training courses.
