Procedure
Objectives: A To learn common idioms
B To use idioms appropriately
Dictionary skills: Finding idioms in the dictionary or on the DVD-ROM
Tasks: A Categorize idioms by meaning (start vs. stop)
B Choose the correct word to complete the idiom in each sentence
Teachers Notes for Quiz 3:
Idioms
Ask students to work alone or in pairs. Tell students that idioms in the dictionary are usually found
at the rst important word of the expression, often a noun or verb but can also be at an adjective or
adverb. They are listed together with the other senses of the word in frequency order so that really
common idiomatic expressions appear before less common senses. It may be faster to nd idioms on
the DVD-ROM than in the dictionary because you can enter the complete idiom in the Search box and
press Enter. For example, type get cracking. Then click on the item you want in the pop-up window.
While others are still working, the rst students to nish can be set to work writing short conversations
with idioms from both of the mind maps. They can use the sample sentences from the dictionary as
models if they wish.
