We want to thank Tyson for this generous donation to the Greenwood
Community Center. This has been a plan in the works for a long time and
with the help from Tyson, it has become a reality. There has been positive
comments from the community regarding this addition. This pavilion will
give an additional space for families and groups to have a place outside
out of the elements. If anyone has any questions regarding the usage of
the pavilion, call Clinton West at 479-508-7379.
~~~
Tyson Foods, Inc. recently donated a $15,000 grant to con-
struct a covered pavilion to the Greenwood Community in
Franklin County, Ark. This pavilion will aid in the community
outreach programs.
Were a part of this community, said Jim Rofkahr, Scranton
Plant Manager for Tyson Foods. We know what this donation
will mean to the community and were proud we could do our
small part to make a difference.
Founded in 1879, Greenwood Community Center started as
the community school and was deeded over for a community
center in 1949. The Community Center has been used as a di-
saster relief shelter during severe weather. The center is also
used for many community activities.
Senior Moments
(Years Gone By)
(Jan. 30, 2008)
A doctor and a lawyer were
in a bitter dispute. The doctor
said, A little bird told me what
kind of lawyer you are, cheep,
cheep, cheep. The lawyer
fired back, Is that so, well a
little duck told what kind of
doctor you are.
Some years ago my sister,
Ruth, sent me a book, The Best
Of Will Rogers. She remem-
bered our dad liked him and
he had a book similar to this
one. I recalled that Will Rogers
wrote or spoke about politics
and politicians in America of-
ten, in fact whether he was
doing a live radio broadcast
or on a vaudeville stage his
favorite line was, America
has the best politicians money
can buy.
So from the book, The Best
Of Will Rogers, by Bryan Ster-
ling and Will Rogers Jr. are
some facts, quips and quotes.
William Penn Adair Rogers
(1879-1935) was one of the rar-
est talents this country ever
produced. Part cowboy, part
Indian, born in the Indian ter-
ritory that was to become the
state of Oklahoma, he became
a star of circus, vaudeville,
stage and motion pictures,
both silent and sound and, of
course, radio. He also was one
of the most widely read news-
paper columnists of his day.
Since this is an election
year and you are probably
getting as tired of political
speeches as we are, here are
some excerpts from Will
Rogers. You will notice how
they fit so nicely with the poli-
tics of today. So from the 1930s
heres Will Rogers.
Every year it gets harder
and harder to tell the differ-
ence between a Republican
and a Democrat, of course,
outside of looks. Their plat-
forms and policies become
more and more alike. But I have
found the sure way to tell one
from the other this year. Its
just the way they talk. The
Republicans say, Well,
things could have been
worse, and the Democrats
say, How?
Its really remarkable how
the politicians think of us.
Their every thought is of us
every fourth year.
This country runs in spite
of the parties; in fact, parties
are the biggest handicaps we
have to contend with, and if
there was any doubt left where
Will Rogers stood in his ap-
praisal of politicians, he wrote,
I love a dog. He does noth-
ing for political reasons.
Politics has gotten so ex-
pensive that it takes a lot of
money to even get beat with
nowadays. Everything is
changing; people are taking
their comedians seriously and
the politicians, as a joke, when
it used to be vice versa.
Remember that Rogers
was a cowboy who was expert
in horseback riding and rop-
ing livestock. He developed
the art of twirling a rope
around himself while telling
these little four-liners about
politicians or people holding
public office.
Will attended many na-
tional conventions and they
werent spared from his sharp
criticisms and barbs, so lets
continue.
Our national conventions
are nothing but glorified
Mickey Mouse cartoons and
are solely for amusement pur-
poses. I have been asked to
cover the Republican Con-
vention, to write something
funny. All you have to do to
write something funny about
a Republican Convention is
just tell what happened. The
Democrats already have
started arguing over who will
be the speaker at the next con-
vention. What they better
worry about is who is going
to listen.
After attending a long
convention Will Rogers said,
I flew down here to
Claremore, Okla., to recuper-
ate from one month of
speeches. Heard a mule bray-
ing a while ago out at the barn
and for a minute I couldnt tell
who he was nominating.
Isnt it amazing that Will
Rogers words from the 1930s
are so relevant with those of
today? So in ending, here is a
trivia question for you, Will
Rogers died in 1935, but do
you know the details of his
death? Look it up.
Miracles
by Clydene Overbey
I have never seen a
crippled man walk, a blind man
see, or anyone rise from the
dead. Ive not seen any termi-
nally ill person instantly
healed. Ive not seen anyone
make a ball of fire appear from
the sky. Ive not witnessed
any miracles that the word
miracles normally conjures
up.
Ive seen miracles though,
lots of them. Theyre every-
where, all around us, every day
and weve all seen them. It is
just that sometimes we dont
recognize them. There are little
miracles all around us. If you
look you will see little miracles
everywhere.
Have you ever looked and
marveled at the tiny shoots of
crocuses barely showing
through the frozen mud or
snow? I see them as little
miracles. Frozen and buried
for days and days under huge
piles of snow and frozen
ground, their little green
leaves are a reminder of the
miracle and the great wonder
of life. Have you ever tried to
walk against the wind on a
particularly windy day? It is
very difficult for me to walk
into the wind. But look up and
see that flock of geese flying
northward in a perfect V.
Though they are flying into
the strong wind they float ef-
fortlessly above moving with
such grace and ease through
the crystal-blue sky while I
struggle to walk below. Little
miracles that God has per-
formed every day and I usu-
ally dont ever see.
The trail across the pas-
ture that I often walked
through as a child was cov-
ered in snow or mud for most
of the winter. I missed that
part of my journey, like an old
friend this little trail beaten out
by my family and Brendas
familys feet seems so familiar
to me and walking on the trail
is comfortable and becomes
new again in my mind. The
little miracle of things remem-
bered. Now that is a miracle I
can have because God has al-
lowed my memory to remain
fresh about my rich past.
There are many more little
miracles to see and all I have
to do is take the time to look.
Sometimes I get caught up in
my life and I forget to take the
time to step back and really
look at the world that sur-
rounds me. Days ahead will
bring many miracles and I
want to see them all.
I dont want to miss the
greening grass or that first
warm spring breeze that says
spring is here! I want to be
there when the lifeless, barren
trees of winter slowly awaken
from their winter dreams and
greet a perfectly perfect spring
morning. I want to hear the
birds singing when I awake in
the morning. I want to witness
those first wispy, white, cot-
ton candy castles sailing high
above me on that first warm,
sunny spring afternoon. I
want to feel the crisp wind of
fall and see the beautiful col-
orful leaves as they float down
to the earth to give me a car-
pet to walk on. I want to see
the first winter snowflakes as
they drift down gracefully to
cover the ground in beauty.
Miracles are not so rare.
Look around. They are every-
where. Your children, your
friends, your pets, your memo-
ries, a bright blue sky, a per-
fect spring day, or a tulip
dressed in its finest spring
colors bursting open in the
warm sun.
Miracles surround you,
you only have to look: a flock
of birds, a sailboat pushed by
the wind on a glassy lake, a
child flying a kite, a glowing,
fiery sunset, or the twinkling
canopy of stars on a star-
tlingly clear, winter night.
MIRACLES! Miracles hap-
pen to us every day. The
childs smile, the flowers, the
wind, the sun, the moon, the
stars and all we take for
granted. I look at the world
with the eyes of a child some-
times as I see vividly in my
mind those miraculous child-
hood days of my life. Even the
snowflakes that drift down
from the sky, always welcome
to me, are beautiful. Each one
is unique, each one a perfect
crystal, each a little miracle.
I know without a doubt
that God can and does pre-
form Big Miracles. And it is
God who gives us all those
little miracles also. Ive known
Jesus personally for 59 years
and I know what He has done
in my life. Many miracles, little
miracles, big miracles!
Deuteronomy 4:12: And
the Lord spake unto you out
of the midst of the fire: ye
heard the voice of the words,
but saw no similitude; only
[ye heard] a voice.
Deuteronomy 4:24: For
the Lord thy God [is] a con-
suming fire, [even] a jealous
God.
