1 for z/OS Buffer pools Buffer pools are areas of virtual storage in which DB2
temporarily stores pages of table
spaces or indexes. When an application program accesses a row of a table, DB2 retrieves the page that contains the row and places the page in a buffer. If the reuired data is already in a buffer, the application program need not wait for it to be retrieved from dis!, so the time and cost of retrieving the page is significantly reduced. Buffer pools reuire monitoring and tuning. "he si#e of buffer pools is critical to the Version 9.1 for z/OS DB2 system objects DB2
has a comprehensive infrastructure that enables it to provide data integrity,
performance, and the ability to recover user data. $nli!e the DB2 data structures that users create and access, DB2 controls and accesses system ob%ects. In addition, &arallel 'ysplex
data sharing uses shared system ob%ects.
DB2 catalog DB2 maintains a set of tables that contain information about the data that DB2 controls. "hese tables are collectively !nown as the catalog. "he catalog tables contain information about DB2 ob%ects such as tables, views, and indexes. When you create, alter, or drop an ob%ect, DB2 inserts, updates, or deletes rows of the catalog that describe the ob%ect. DB2 directory "he DB2 directory contains information that DB2 uses during normal operation. Active and archive logs DB2 records all data changes and other significant events in a log. By having this record of changes, DB2 can re(create those changes for you in the event of a failure or roll the changes bac! to a previous point in time. Bootstrap data set "he bootstrap data set )BSDS* is a +',- !ey(seuenced data set ).'D'* that contains information that is critical to DB2, such as the names of the logs. DB2 uses information in the B'D' for system restarts and for any activity that reuires reading the log. Buffer pools Buffer pools are areas of virtual storage in which DB2 temporarily stores pages of table spaces or indexes. Data definition control support database "he data definition control support )DD/'* database refers to a user( maintained collection of tables that are used by data definition control support to restrict the submission of specific DB2 DD0 )data definition language* statements to selected application identifiers )plans or collections of pac!ages*. Resource limit facility database "he resource limit facility database )D'120'"* is a facility that lets you control the amount of processor resources that are used by dynamic '303/" statements. Work file database $se the work file database as storage for processing '40 statements that reuire wor!ing space, such as that reuired for a sort. DB2 lets you specify default buffer pools for user data and for indexes. , special type of buffer pool that is used only in &arallel 'ysplex
data sharing is the group buffer pool,
which resides in the coupling facility. 6roup buffer pools reside in a special &27'-8 0&,2 logical partition called a coupling facility, which enables several DB2 subsystems to share information and control the coherency of data. Buffer pools reside in the DB2 DB-9 primary address space. "his option offers the best performance. "he maximum si#e of a buffer pool is 9 "B.
