Important McKenzie Update
GREETINGS FAMILY, FRIENDS & SUPPORTERS,
As most of you know Im a big fan of the NBA. If you follow sports at all you'll know that this summer
has been an exciting summer of free agency. Many star players have been available on the open market. Free
agency is a perfect metaphor for whats been going on in my life in the past couple of months. Those of you
who have been following the life and times of the McKenzie family know that we moved to BC two years ago
for me to participate in a newly designed work/study seminary program. Ive been working with a brand new
church plant called Journey Church and concurrently working through academic assignments. Its been
challenging and rewarding at the same time. Unfortunately things have not worked out as planned. In March I
was informed that my progress on the academic side was not keeping up with the expected pace. I was given
time to speed things up and produce at a quicker pace. I worked hard and ramped up my efforts. In May I was
informed that I still wasnt on a pace that they felt was going to get me to completion in the expected time
frame of the program. Because of that I was released from the program. It was quite a shock and has thrown
a wrench into the life of the McKenzies. After nearly a decade in Taiwan where I worked hard to forge a place
in ministry I nd myself a free agent in Canada. As I write this I feel ashamed and discouraged. So many of
you have supported me and been in my corner in the past several years, especially those of you in Taiwan. I
feel like Ive not only let myself and my family down but Ive let my friends and supporters around the world
down. Im sorry for my part in this circumstance.
The program itself bears some responsibility in this outcome as well. As a new program there was a
certain level of disorganization and some ongoing changes that made it tough to track as its hard to hit a
moving target. There was some disappointment when the program didnt follow through with the promises
made in the initial pitch. There were also some inconsistencies between the policies they had in their
documentation and the actual implementation of those policies, specically as it relates to academic progress
and probationary periods. This program sounded so enticing initially and I was attracted to its new school
thinking. It seemed like a good t for me. In the end Im sad that things dont seem to have worked out. I do
have an appeal in with the program and am waiting to hear if they will reconsider my place in the program.
As a part of that appeal I received many beautiful letters of support from people Ive worked with at Journey
Church and from a fellow student. Those letters give Nevada and I great hope that this is what Im supposed
to be doing, it just may not be in this setting in BC.

My goal in coming to BC was to gain new knowledge & skills so that I could become a better leader. I
may not have reached the ofcial goal but I feel like progress has been made. Im happy that God gave us the
opportunity to help get Journey Church up and running. That has been the best part of the experience here in
Canada thus far. I still believe that Ive been called and gifted in ways that can and will benet the church
moving forward. Right now I just dont know where and when the next opportunity will present itself.

As we move forward I would like to ask you for two things in this time. 1) We ask for your prayer
support for us during this time of uncertainty. Our family has always followed Gods lead and depended on His
provision. We are waiting on Him to open doors and to make clear the direction we need to take moving
forward. In the meantime things are very stressful as I am unemployed and we have to keep up with the
realties of life. 2) Id also like to ask you to keep your eyes and ears open for ministry opportunities that may
be a t for me. Many of you who follow our newsletters and posts have crossed paths with me in ministry
settings. I hope that those experiences have been good ones and that you can speak to what I bring to the
table in a church setting. Your word of mouth support may open doors moving forward so please think of me
when you hear of anything. We are willing to consider all opportunities around the world so nothing is out of
the question. Life is an adventure and we are always excited to nd out where God may have us adventure
next.

This has been one of the more difcult messages Ive ever had to write but I always want to be open
and honest with all of you who care so deeply for us. Once again I apologize if Ive let you down. However, we
will continue to have hope that God is at work and there is a plan we can trust in. I will cling to the words of
Romans 5:

we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance;
perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not put us to shame, because
Gods love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.

Sincerely,
Chris McKenzie & the McKenzie Family
