New multi-lingual CD
--------------------
The CD-ROM that you received contains English, French, Italian,
German and Spanish versions of Carbon Copy, which makes it
easier than ever to purchase and deploy Carbon Copy in a
multi-lingual environment.
Microsoft (r) Windows (r) 2000/Me Support
--------------------------------------
Carbon Copy now fully supports Windows 2000/Me.
- Remote Control was modified to resolve several issues
installing the remote control video drivers on Windows 2000.
- Carbon Copy will accommodate an operating system upgrade
from Windows 9x to Windows 2000.
- File Transfer will not transfer a file that is encrypted
as it is considered a breech of security.
Detect other Remote Control products
------------------------------------
We highly recommend uninstalling other remote control products
before installing Carbon Copy. During installation, Carbon Copy
will detect other remote control programs and offer to uninstall
them. Having two remote control products on a single machine can
cause system instability.
Approve Connections
-------------------
The Approve Connections feature forces a local user to approve
a connection. In this scenario, a dialog box is displayed asking
the user to click the OK button in order to accept an incoming
connection.
However,if Carbon Copy is running on a logged-out Windows NT(r)/2000
computer and a connection attempt is made, the connection attempt
will fail (since no one is logged in to approve the connection).
In a support environment, this will prevent a desktop support
technician from connecting to a "secure" computer to diagnose and
remotely fix a problem.
To resolve this limitation, a new feature called "Prompt to Approve
Connections" was added. If this feature is set to "never", Carbon
Copy will never force the local user to approve the connection.
If set to "Always", the user must always be present to accept the
connection and if the computer is logged out, the connection will not
be allowed. If this feature is set to "Only when logged in (NT/2000)",
the user must be present to approve the connection if the computer is
logged in. However the Approve Connections functionality will be
bypassed if the computer is logged out.
Minimize Voice Chat User Interface
----------------------------------
An option was added to the Voice Chat UI to hide the volume and
speaker controls leaving only the text chat portion of the user
interface. This reduces the amount of screen area that the UI
occupies.
Viewer Only option in Remote Control
------------------------------------
A new Remote Control feature has been added to "Ignore the Guest Mouse
and Keyboard." This option, when enabled, will allow a Guest to
connect to your system and launch remote control to view your screen
only. His or her keyboard input and mouse movements will not be sent
to your computer.
Other Enhancements
------------------
1. An INI file option has been added to always use the network
computer name when waiting for call on the network.
Add the following line to the [Carbon Copy] section of the
CCW32.INI file
"AlwaysUpdateWorkstationName=On/Off"
2. Order of available connection devices has been changed to show
the most common ones first.
3. The Y2K compliant version of mfc40.dll has been included in this
release.
4. Carbon Copy no longer allows you to launch the Windows NT User
Manager from within the User Profiles Tab of the main user
interface. To access the User Manager, you must run the User
Manager from the Start menu.

* Fixed in this release *
***************************************************************
Remote Control
--------------
- Fix for double pointers with CL542x cards. Not 100% fixed,
since the double cursor will only go away after the first
cursor change.
- Fixed blackness with flying folder copy.
- Blue Screen Crash on Windows NT 4.0 Server
- Checks the registry and determines the startup mode for
CCDEVICE.SYS. Adding this entry to the registry will fix a
blue screen on some servers.
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microcom\Carbon Copy 32]
"CCDeviceStartup"=2
- Microsoft NetMeeting Driver Fix - Contains logic to correct
Remote Control problem when NetMeeting is installed. If driver
MNMDD.SYS is detected, Remote Control will chain to the next
display driver in the list.
- Introduce new INI parameter - Snapshot=On. This forces all
bitmap computations on the Host to use the snapshot method.
- Don't always send source and destination bitmap references.
These bitmap objects may not have tags. Fixes crash when
daisy-chaining Remote Control controlling Microsoft Word.
- Added support for new INI parameter - Snapshot=On. This forces
all bitmap computations on the Host to use the snapshot method.
- Support for 32-bit video drivers on Windows 98/Me platforms. This
includes support for the following video cards or controller
chipsets: TNT, TNT2, Gloria Synergy, Gloria Synergy II,
Matrox G200, Matrox G400, NVidia, Diamond Viper V550 & V770,
Diamond Viper.
File Transfer/Auto Pilot
------------------------
- Fixed crash when you try to edit properties of a copied AutoPilot
icon
Security
--------
- Warn the user that the security file can not be found,
and to re-install Carbon Copy.
Connections
-----------
- Fixed the ILS browse limitation of 20 workstations
Setup
-----
- Do not install/remove msconpt.dll for Windows 98/Me.
- Added logging of failures to find a domain controller and
enumerating users of a particular domain.
- Carbon Copy will now try to find a remote domain controller by
asking the local machine if it fails to find one on the local
domain controller.
- Made the Windows NT security caches global, which fixes a memory leak.
Voice Chat
----------
- Voice Chat will now be able to load the audio compression manager
on Windows 98 systems.
- Audio controls will not be disabled on some Windows 98 systems.

Upgrading operating system from Windows 9x/Me to Windows 2000
--------------------------------------------------------------
If you upgrade your operating system from Widows 9x/Me to Windows 2000
after Carbon Copy is installed, Windows 2000 will report that the
generic ISDN port that Carbon Copy has installed as a valid
connection device, is an incompatible device. This error will not
adversely affect the operation of Carbon Copy. This error message
will not occur if Carbon Copy is installed after the operating
system upgrade.
Logging in using Windows NT/2000 Security
-----------------------------------------
When using Windows NT/2000 Security, you must supply a Windows
NT/2000 networking username and password to authenticate the
connection. The username must be entered exactly as it appears
in the Profiles tab on the Host computer including the domain name.
For example if a user appears in the Profiles tab as
"WORKDOMAIN\jsmith", you must enter this entire username when
prompted during the connection.
Errors in Remote Control when you change color settings
-------------------------------------------------------
On a Windows 2000 computer only, you may see remote control errors
if you dynamically change the color depth settings on the Host
computer. These errors may include menus and icons not painting
correctly. This will only occur when you install Carbon Copy when
the display is set to 16-bit per pixel color depth and you then
change to a higher color depth. Reboot the host computer.
This will resolve the problem.
Black icons in Remote Control
-----------------------------
If using an ATI Rage Fury video adapter on your host and black
icons are present in your Remote Control viewer, please obtain
Administrative install doesn't work to a Windows 2000 machine.
an updated video driver from the manufacturer - Version 4.12.6269
or higher will resolve this issue.
Black boxes on the Remote Control viewer
----------------------------------------
Large bitmaps will appear as black boxes in Remote Control when the
"Disable Large Bitmaps" feature is enabled. This is normal. Please
disable the "View as a Web Page" feature of your desktop folders or
disable this feature to eliminate the problem. This behavior is
also present when remotely controlling Internet Explorer.
Running Setup with Limited Disk Space
-------------------------------------
Setup requires a minimum of 6Mb of disk space plus 2Mb of temporary
workspace to install the complete Carbon Copy product. If your
disk space is limited to less than this amount, and you have a
previously installed version of Carbon Copy on your hard disk,
you may want to uninstall it so you have enough space to reinstall
the product.
Logging On/Off Windows NT/2000
------------------------------
If you want Carbon Copy to be active when your Windows NT/2000
system is logged off or when it is locked, you must run Carbon
Copy as a service. You can start Carbon Copy as a service by
choosing "Start Service" from the Start menu in the Carbon
Copy section. You can ensure that Carbon Copy always runs as a
service at boot time by selecting the "Load Carbon Copy before the
Windows login prompt" check box in the Security options dialog.
When Carbon Copy is running as a service the user interface will not
appear until you double-click the "CC" icon in the bottom right
corner of your screen.
Adobe Type Manager
------------------
Adobe Type Manager (ATM) modifies (patches) Windows in ways
which are sometimes not compatible with Carbon Copy.
If you experience difficulties, disable ATM.
Conferencing Server
-------------------
You can setup Carbon Copy as an unmanned conferencing server by
setting the "UnmannedServer=On" in the [Carbon Copy] section of
the CCW32.INI file. This will enable Carbon Copy to automatically
answer the first Voice Chat session, and refer all future Voice
Chat approvals to the first voice chat station.
If you do not want any approvals, then set "AutoAnswer=On" in the
[Voice Chat] section of the CCW32.INI file. This will enable Carbon
Copy to automatically answer all incoming voice chat sessions.
Restart or Resume AutoPilot Tasks
---------------------------------
If you have configured an AutoPilot task to resume or restart a
FileTransfer in the event of a failure, it will attempt to retry
5 times bydefault. If after 5 attempts the task is not completed,
AutoPilot willstop trying to run this task. You may change the
number of retries by adding the "MaxAutoPilotRetries=n" option to
the [File Transfer] sectionof the CCW32.INI file where "n"
represents the number of retries. If you set MaxAutoPilotRetries=0,
AutoPilot will try indefinitely to completethe task.
IMPORTANT: Use the resume or restart AutoPilot options with care
when making long distance modem or dial-up networking connections.
Initial delay in File Transfer on very large files
--------------------------------------------------
When transferring very large files in File transfer, there may
be an initial delay of several seconds before the transfer begins.
This is normal and is a result of the adaptive compression logic.
Creating Phonebook Connection Icons using ILS
---------------------------------------------
When creating a phonebook connection icon that will establish a
TCP/IPconnection using an ILS server you must specify the
workstation nameusing the following format: WORKSTATION_NAME
{xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx}, where WORKSTATION_NAME represents the name of
the Host, and {xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx} represents the TCP/IP address of
the Host that is in wait for call on the ILS server.

For example, if a Carbon Copy user is in wait forcall on
ils1.carboncopy.com with the workstation name of "OfficePC" and
his TCP/IP address is 123.45.67.89, you should create a phonebook
entry with "OfficePC{123.45.67.89}" as the workstation name.

The easiest way to create a phonebook connection icon is to first
browse using the ILS server. When the list of available Hosts
appears on the network tab, right-click on the Host to which you
want to connect, and select Create Phonebook Entry. This will
create a phonebook entry for you.
"Copy Newer Files Only" file transfer option
--------------------------------------------
The "Copy Newer Files Only" option, as its name implies, will
only copy a file that already exists on the target computer.
When using this feature, remember to also enable the "Overwrite
Existing Files" option. Otherwise, the file will not be copied.

* Known Issues in this release. *
**************************************************************
Logoff upon Disconnect
----------------------
The Logoff upon Disconnect feature (Windows NT Only) may not work
properly on the original release of Windows NT 4.0 or on the
Windows NT service release 1.0. To resolve this issue, upgrade
your Windows NT workstation to service release 2.0 or greater.
Logoff upon Connect
-------------------
The Logoff upon Connect feature (Windows NT Only) may not work
properly on the original release of Windows NT 4.0 or on the
Windows NT service release 1.0. To resolve this issue, upgrade
your Windows NT workstation to service release 2.0 or greater.
Disable Host Video
------------------
You may experience problems on Windows 95 PCs when you have
selected the Disable Host Video option in Remote Control.
Disable Host Video is not compatible with all Windows 95
video cards.
Disable Host Video may not work on a Windows NT
Carbon Copy Host if the video driver on the Host PC
is configured for anything other than 256 colors.
Full Screen DOS Remote Control
------------------------------
Full screen DOS boxes are not currently supported
on a Windows NT Host during Remote Control.
Backwards Compatibility with Previous Versions of Carbon Copy
-------------------------------------------------------------
Connections from Altiris Carbon Copy Version 5.6 to Carbon Copy 3.0
over IPX or NetBIOS are not currently supported. However, you can
make connections between Altiris Carbon Copy Version 5.6 and Carbon
Copy 3.0 using TCP/IP or TAPI (modem). Connections from Carbon
Copy to Carbon Copy 3.0 will not support Remote Printing.
Disable Keyboard and Mouse Option on Windows NT
-----------------------------------------------
When you select the Disable Keyboard and Mouse option on the
Security Options dialog box, the keyboard will not be disabled
under Windows NT. However, the mouse will be disabled.
Communications Dialog box
-------------------------
When you make changes to any of the settings on the Communications
dialog box, you must turn off and back on Wait For Call by
deselecting and then selecting the Wait For Call button on the
main Carbon Copy toolbar, otherwise your changes may not take
effect.

Follow this procedure after changing Browse settings as well.
Cannot launch multiple Carbon Copy utilities
--------------------------------------------
If you are experiencing problems launching multiple Carbon Copy
utilities at once, add the following line to the CCW32.INI file:
1. Open the file CCW32.INI
2. In the [Carbon Copy] section, add the line:
UtilityTimeout=40
3. By default, Utility Timeout is set to 40 seconds.
Try increasing the amount of seconds for utility timeout.
Do not set this parameter lower than 40 seconds.
4. Save any changes you made to CCW32.INI. You must restart
Carbon Copy for the change to take effect.
Running Carbon Copy as a Service on a Windows NT PC
---------------------------------------------------
When you install Carbon Copy on a Windows NT PC using a Shared
installation, running Carbon Copy as a service is not supported.
Make sure you have not selected the "Load Carbon Copy before
Windows Login Prompt" on the Security Options Global tab.
Full Duplex Voice Chat sessions
-------------------------------
Carbon Copy only supports full duplex audio via Voice Chat for the
first two stations. When a third station connects, Voice Chat
will be switched to half duplex mode. When the third stations
disconnects, the remaining two stations will be set back to
full duplex.
Waiting for Call and Browsing ILS servers
-----------------------------------------
Waiting for call and browsing of ILS servers will be done in
alphabetical order. If the first server is slow, or not responding,
there may be a delay before Carbon Copy proceeds to the next server
in the list. As Carbon Copy is trying to communicate to the ILS
server, a yellow light is displayed next to the ILS server in the
status tab. If the server continues to be unresponsive, remove it
from the ILS servers list in the communications property sheets.
Remote Printing Settings
------------------------
When you are using Remote Printing we recommend you configure
your print destination PC (i.e. the PC that is attached to
the physical printer) as follows:
On Windows 95/98/Me:
From the start menu, select Settings, select Printers.
Right-click on the appropriate printer icon and select
Properties. Select the Details tab and click on the
Spool Settings button. Select "Start printing after
last page is spooled". If possible, select "Disable
bi-directional support for this printer".
On Windows NT 4.0:
From the start menu, select Settings, select Printers.
Right-click on the appropriate printer icon and select
Properties. Select the Scheduling tab and select
"Start printing after last page is spooled".
On the Ports tab, uncheck "Enable bi-directional support".
On Windows 2000:
From the start menu, select Settings, select Printers.
Right-click on the appropriate printer icon and select
Properties. Select the Advanced tab and select
"Start printing after last page is spooled".
On the Ports tab, uncheck "Enable bi-directional support".
Configure the print source PC as described in the Carbon Copy
documentation.
Carbon Copy not connecting with some US Robotics Sportster modems
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Carbon Copy may not be able to successfully establish connections
with some USRobotics Sportster 33.6 or 56K Voice modems. The modems
will connect but the Carbon Copy connection may fail. To correct
this condition set the "AnswerRingCount=3" in the [Carbon Copy]
section of the CCW32.INI file.
Remote Controlling a Host running Active Desktop
------------------------------------------------
You may experience poor Remote Control performance if your Host
PC is using Microsoft's Active Desktop. To improve Remote Control
performance, right-click on your Host PC's desktop, select "Active
Desktop" from the pop-up menu, and turn off "View as Web Page".
Alternatively, on the Guest, you can set the "Disable Active
Desktop" option located in the Remote Control Options dialog
under the "Desktop and Cache" tab.
Upgrading from Carbon Copy 5.x to 5.5
-------------------------------------
If you have defined your own list of ILS Servers to use when waiting
for a call or when browsing using the internet, and you upgrade from
Carbon Copy 5.x to 5.5, this list of ILS Servers will be overwritten
with the default settings. You will have to re-enter your list of
ILS Servers.
Admin/Remote install (SETUP /A) to a Windows 2000 machine.
----------------------------------------------------------
The administrative or remote install options do not work when
applied to a Windows 2000 machine. The remote running of setup
is not possible on that environment.
Shared install is not functional
--------------------------------
Shared install (SETUP /A) is an unsupported mode of operation
and does not work.
Dr. Watson Error when running File Transfer on Windows NT 4.0
-------------------------------------------------------------
If you are trying to copy a file using file transfer to a drive
that is formatted as a FAT32 partition, Carbon Copy will generate
a Dr. Watson error. This will only happen when Windows NT 4.0 is
running on one partition of a dual-boot system and you are trying
to copy the file to the other (FAT32) partition. Windows NT does
not recognize this file system.
Internet Locator Server on a Windows 2000 system
------------------------------------------------
You cannot install Internet Locator Server on a Windows 2000
computer. If you want to build your own ILS server you must
choose to install ILS on a Windows NT 4.0 platform.
