Just Back from Cameroon (Again!

) - July

After a whirlwind 12-day trip to Cameroon, I can honestly say this is the best trip Ive made there! For
those of you following my story on Facebook, you will remember that scheduling this trip was something
of a nightmare! Three times I had to change the dates before I bought my tickets - and then I had to
change it once more after the tickets were purchased due to chemo schedule changes. Frankly, I was a
bit ticked about that whole mess.

Until I got to Cameroon and had my first meeting with one of our high priority partners in Yaound.
In that meeting, I learned that one of their other supporting partners was unable to meet their funding
commitments, leaving a very large shortfall for the next three months! Discussions during my time there
included which translation projects might need to be delayed and what other budget cuts would be
necessary. But, because I was there, Wycliffe Associates was able to provide an extra gift that will
help them make it through and they received a major gift from another agency as well. Praise God!

One of the interesting things about this story is that the first thing our Cameroonian partners did was
call an all-night prayer vigil. That happened on Friday, July 18 which was the day before I left. On
Saturday morning I received the final go-ahead for our funds transfer! When I shared that with their
general director, he led us in a prayer of thanksgiving and there were tears flowing!

Lutheran Bible Translators Anniversary - May
In May I was thrilled to participate in the 50
th
Anniversary
celebration of Lutheran Bible Translators. So much has been
accomplished in those 50 years, and I really enjoyed getting
to meet more of my LBT colleagues. Unfortunately, I had to
leave the event early due to my first opportunity (and last!)
to experience malaria.

Fireside stories from around the world was very educational
as I got to hear more of what took place before I joined LBT,
volunteering in 1996 and then as an associate in 2009.

Tactical Meetings in June

During the month of June, all Wycliffe Associates directors met
to discuss Strategic Plans for the next fiscal year. Right after
that our Operations Team held two days of Tactical Meetings to
which I was invited in my newly expanded role. There are some
very exciting new things on the horizon for WA involvement as we
are beginning to sponsor new Bible translation starts for churches
who want Gods Word in their language but are not connected with
anyone who can help them. It was a great time to work face-to-
face with our Africa Area Director, Al Hawthorne.

Our new Translation Department is now working with the Training Department to provide Bible
translation training which will be available online and via mobile phones. Its sometimes hard to believe,
but almost everyone has a cell phone now even living in village settings with mud block homes and
thatched roofs! This will open up new opportunities for language groups who have been on hold for far
too long and many of them are in French-Speaking Africa!

Health Update
Despite chemo delays caused by malaria and pneumonia in May, my cancer marker count is on the way
down! This is great news, and Im also getting ready to have some genetic testing which will help my
medical team more closely align the treatments with the exact form of disease were fighting. Im
still feeling strong and upbeat, trusting God for his timing and healing as all of you continue to pray.

Upcoming Events / Prayer Topics
July/August
Continue chemo treatments (July 28, Aug 11, Aug 18.)
Aug 19-27 I will be in IL with my family since the May vacation turned into a hospital stay.
My next international travel will likely be in October or November unless Im released to move
back to Africa before that.
Sept 1 is the target date for starting the next construction at the Bamenda Regional Training
Center. Im waiting to hear back from a potential project manager. This will be a much-needed
classroom which will serve up to 60 participants in translation and other training.
