STORY

Members of the Burundian National Defense Forces 6
th
contingent
serving under the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) have
completed their tour of duty and are being replaced by a fresh
contingent.

The troops rotating out have been in Somalia for the past year
serving alongside other African troops that make up the
peacekeeping force from Uganda, Djibouti, Kenya, Ethiopia and Sierra Leone.

Speaking during the handover ceremony held in Mogadishu today,
the commander of the outgoing contingent Col. Habarugira Jean Luc
appealed to his colleagues to uphold the good work and to leave a
remarkable difference.

I believe that you will work as you should, given your skills and
discipline. Working with your brothers and sisters the Somali,
everything will be done and when your mission is over, they will say
that you left the Somali people in a better place, he said.

The commander of the incoming contingent Col. Ndayambaje
Revelien gave assurance that the new team would build on the
achievements already accomplished in the quest for peace in Somalia.

We can assure you that the point at which you ended, shall be our
beginning, he said.

The AMISOM Force Commander Lt. Gen. Silas Ntigurirwa noted that
cooperation among Troop Contributing Countries has key been to the
success of the mission and challenged the troops to cooperate with
their counterparts.

You are aware Col. Ndayambaje and your staff, you have arrived at
the right moment where we are planning to launch another round of
the offensive in all sectors against al-Shabaab. You are recommended
to plan and to operate accordingly in order to achieve the whole
operational and military objectives and targets, he said.
Gen. Mohamud Hasan, a commander in the Somali National Army
applauded the Burundian troops for the support and sacrifice they
have made for the Somali people:

Somalia and the Somalis will never forget the Burundian soldiers for
coming to help us in this conflict. We pay tribute to those that have
lost their lives and we will never forget them, he said.

Burundian troops were first deployed in Somalia in 2007 at the
height of insurgence by the al Qaeda linked terrorist group, the al
Shabaab.

END.
