Regions of Alaska

Being the largest state of America, Alaskas size is a problem. So Alaska is

often split into 5 regions with social, commercial, and geographical
characteristics easy to indentify. The regions are the Arctic, the interior,
the Southwestern, the Southcentral, and the Southeastern.
Arctic
There is the arctic, the farthest region
to the north. It stretches from the
Canadian border on the east to the
Chukchi Sea to the west with the
Brooks Range that forms the southern
border.
1

The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge is
nearly 20 million roadless acres, three
designated wild rivers, and the largest
area of designated wilderness (eight
million acres) in the National Wildlife
Refuge system.
4

The Brooks Range, mountains and
glaciers rising up to 9,000 feet, is the
primary geologic feature of the refuge.
The Brooks Range run east to west,
approximately 75 miles wide, rising up
from a flat, tundra-covered plain.
4

Interior
The next region is the Interior which
makes up two thirds of the state and
stretches from the Brooks Range to
the north and the Alaska Range to
the South.
1
The interior the warmest summers
and the lowest record winter
temperatures.
5

Alaskas interior is dominated by the
White demographic, followed by the
Native and African American.
8

The total population of the interior
was 104,756 in 2003.
Tourism and mining remain the big
economic factors.
9
Fort Knox gold
mine is the largest producing gold
mine in the state.
South Central
The Southcentral region which is
bordered by the Gulf of Alaska to the
South and the Alaska Range to the
North.
1
The Chugach Mountains are
at the eastern border and the
Aleutian Range forms the western
border.
1

While it is drier than the southeast, it
gets more snow.
5

This area is primarily white, followed
by African American, and Native.
7

This region thrives on the presence
of the US Government and the on
the oil industry.
10
The transportation
in the area as well as the tourism,
are also economic factors.
10

Southeast
The skinniest part of
Alaska, it runs along the
Canadian border and is
mostly islands
The southeast is known
for being very wet but it
is also the warmest part
of Alaska.
5

Around Juneau the
economy is based
around the government
transportation and as a
service center.
11
the
fishing industry is also a
major mainstay of the
region but the timber
industry has been in a
steady decline.
11

Southwest
Stretches from Kodiak
Island to Norton
Sound.
The climate varies in
the region. It is dry
near the north and
wet near the south.
5

The Southwest relies
on the seafood
industry and well as
hunting for its
economy.
