The DM8, DM34 and DM140 are
Nokias higher order digital multi-
plex equipment. The higher order
multiplex equipment multiplexes
four tributary signals into the
main system, and vice-versa.
DM8 Second Order Digital Multi-
plex Equipment
Combines four plesiochronous
2 Mbit/s tributary signals into
an 8 Mbit/s stream.
DM34 Third Order Digital Multi-
plex Equipment
Combines four plesiochronous
8 Mbit/s tributary signals into a
34 Mbit/s stream.
DM140 Fourth Order Digital Mul-
tiplex Equipment
Combines four plesiochronous
34 Mbit/s tributary signals into
a 140 Mbit/s stream.
Appl i cati on Areas
The digital multiplex equipment is
developed for ITU-T hierarchy
level multiplexing and demulti-
plexing in:
local networks
junction networks
long distance networks
dedicated networks for rail
ways, for gas, oil and power
companies etc.
All functions contained
in a single plug-in module
No separate power supply
or alarm unit needed
Directly configurable into
skip, and drop-and-insert
applications
Low power consumption
High reliability
Flexible installation in
various mechanical
constructions
Two programmable alarm
outputs for interfacing to
conventional supervisory
systems
Centralised network
management with the
Nokia NMS.

corporate networks
networks for connecting
mobile radio base stations.
Nokia's higher order multiplexing
equipment can use any suitable
transmission medium, such as:
radio links
symmetric cable systems
optical fibre systems
higher order systems.
Nokias higher order multiplexing
equipment is developed for nor-
mal one hierarchy level multiplex-
ing, but due to its modular design,
both skip and drop-and-insert
configurations can be built easily
using the same modules.
Compact Desi gn
All higher-order digital multiplex
equipment are incorporated into a
single plug-in module. Each mod-
ule comprises one Eurocard-sized
board containing all the multi-
plexing and demultiplexing func-
tions.
Fl exi bl e I nstal l ati on
The Nokia mechanics construc-
tion concept offers several flexible
installation options in wallmount-
ing cases, Nokia Office Boxes,
equipment cabinets, slimracks and
19-inch subracks. This arrange-
ment allows the free placement of
units as well as other Nokia trans-
mission equipment units in any
vacant unit space to increase con-
figuration flexibility.

Versati l e Programmi ng
All maintenance operations are
performed via the microprocessor,
built into the equipment. The mi-
croprocessor is commanded
through an ITU-T V:ll service in-
terface. The service interface is
normally accessed with the Nokia
Service Terminal, but can also be
used with the Nokia Network
Management System family
(Nokia NMS). For remote opera-
tions, the data channel built into
the equipment extends the service
interface to a remote station.
The service interface provides
an advanced way of communicat-
ing with the multiplex equipment.
It provides facilities such as:
accurate alarm indication with
alarm memory;
signal quality measurements;
review and reset of internal er-
ror counters;
programming of internal vari-
ables;
programming of test points and
alarm outputs
Programming of tributary use
and signal loopbacks.
