9uidelines for the (ompletion of the Research Proposal
The research proposal is an integral part of any application to conduct research at the %lamorgan usiness !chool
and should summarise your intended research as clearly as possi&le. This proposal will &e considered &y the
research applications panel ('AP(, which is comprised of senior academics within the faculty and it is they who
will decide whether your application is appro)ed. *t is possi&le for an application to e+hi&it some flaws &ut
possess sufficient merit for 'AP to recommend that the applicant ma#e certain changes, often with help from a
nominated mem&er of faculty. *n these circumstances it can &e possi&le for applicants to re,su&mit successfully.
The proposal should &e no more than 2,--- words in length. Applicants for the DA in Pu&lic !er)ice
"anagement should consult the additional notes set out at the end of these guidelines.
The suggested structure of the proposal is as follows$
#ntroduction
This should pro)ide an o)er)iew of the research in around 2-- words. This is e.ui)alent to an e+ecuti)e summary
or a&stract.
The introduction should also clearly set out the research .uestion. *n other words, what is it that you wish to find
out/ *t is possi&le to configure this as one o)er,arching .uestion supported &y a num&er of su& aims, &ut 0what
you want to find out1 should ideally &e e+pressi&le in one sentence.
Please note that at doctoral le)el the .uestion must show good potential for analysis and criti.ue. 2uestions that
see# to 0loo# at1 or 0descri&e1 a phenomenon are rarely sufficient at this le)el.
(onte4t
This is where you tell us why your research proposal is interesting and important. This can &e thought of in two
ways, and your proposal should address &oth in some detail.
3irstly, you should e+plain the organisational conte+t. Where will the study &e located, in an organisation or
across a sector for e+ample/ *s the research stimulated &y a particular pro&lem or set of issues faced in your
organisation or sector/
!econdly, you need to ma#e clear the academic field(s( that you anticipate locating your research in. Will your
study &e carried out in relation to theory from the field of leadership, or strategy, or human resource management,
or finance, for e+ample/ This is important as when you draw your conclusions, you will ha)e to say what
contri&ution your wor# has made, and &y definition, to what field of study.
Methodoloy and method
4ow will you answer the .uestion you ha)e set for yourself/ What data do you need to answer it and where will
you get the data/ Tell us where you will access data from. Are there li#ely to &e o&stacles to collecting the data
you need5 for e+ample will your organisation readily support your wor#/
*n addition you need to descri&e what kind of data you will re.uire to answer your .uestion, and this leads into
considerations of methods. 4ow will you collect and analyse the data/ This might &e through .uestionnaires and
statistical analysis, or inter)iews and su&se.uent analysis of language used for e+ample. The &asic research
.uestion you ha)e set yourself needs to inform what type of data you need.
We do not e+pect you to show yourself to &e an e+pert in research methods here, although you may ha)e pre)ious
e+perience of carrying out research, perhaps for your "asters degree. 4owe)er, a &asic awareness of the strengths
and wea#nesses of different types of data (.ualitati)e )ersus .uantitati)e for e+ample( will &e necessary.
Research Manaement
Please indicate a &road timeta&le for the stages of your research study. When will you collect data, or when do
you en)isage conducting a literature re)iew for e+ample/ *t is important that you show awareness of the
commitment implicit in underta#ing doctoral le)el study.
*t should &e noted of course that in the case of the DA awards, the timeta&le for completion of the )arious stages
is .uite closely prescri&ed.
*n this section you should also mention issues of confidentiality or ethics that are implicit in your research.
References
6ou should ha)e used some references to academic literature in your conte+tualisation of your research, and these
should &e set out here. !imilarly you may ha)e .uoted statistics or facts from industry or go)ernment studies, and
where possi&le these should also &e listed here. *t is important that sources are ac#nowledged.
Additional 9uidelines for applicants for the DBA in Public Services Manaement
*n addition to the guidelines a&o)e, applicants for the DA P!" should pro)ide two further pieces of information.
3irstly, indications should &e gi)en of the sources of funding for the DA P!". ursaries are a)aila&le to support
this programme of study from P!"W789*A4 and will contri&ute some :-; of the costs for the three year period
encompassing the taught element of the programme. All additional costs a&o)e :-; and &eyond this period will
&e &orne &y the indi)idual or sponsor. To &e clear, the &ul# of the fees fall within the three year period. *f students
ta#e &eyond this time to finish their wor# then a writing,up fee (currently <=--( may &e charged.
!econdly, to &e eligi&le to recei)e a &ursary for this programme, DA P!" applicants will need to demonstrate in
their proposals how the research will contri&ute to the Wales pu&lic ser)ices transformation7impro)ement agenda,
as featured in "a#ing the >onnections, eyond oundaries and ?ne Wales. Please see the following lin#s$
