University

Nirma University was established in 2003 as a statutory university under the Gujarat State Act at the initiative of Nirma
Education and Research Foundation (NERF). It is also recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) under
section 2(f) of the UGC Act. It is located in peaceful and sylvan surroundings, about 15 kms from Ahmedabad railway
station. A disciplined environment, serene and pleasant, envelops 125 acres campus. It blends beautifully with the
green landscape, aesthetic elegance of arches and the vibrant pursuit of knowledge by the young aspirants. The
environment gives full scope for group activities, which are plenty, as also to individual pursuits for development on
preferred tracks.
Nirma University has six faculties i.e. (i) Faculty of Engineering and Technology (ii) Faculty of Management (iii) Faculty
of Science (iv) Faculty of Pharmacy (v) Faculty of Doctoral Studies & Research and (vi) Faculty of Law. The diploma,
graduate, post-graduate and doctoral level programmes offered by these faculties are rated high by all stakeholders.

Industrial Engineering and Work-study

CNC Lathe Machine

Mission
It aims to accurately determine the various
properties and characteristics of thermal
insulations as per national and international
testing standards and suggest their appropriate
utilization thereby leading to the saving of
energy and protection of the environment.
It also aims to conduct research and develop
effective thermal insulations including the usage
of eco-friendly and indigenous materials for
various applications.

OBJECTIVES
Thermal Insulations play a great role in keeping the flow of
energy form hot to cold bodies to a minimum thereby saving a
substantial amount of energy. Some of the objectives of using
thermal insulations include:
Energy Conservation in boilers, steam and fluid pipelines,
refrigeration and air-conditioning, chemical and process
industry, industrial and residential buildings, etc.
Personnel Protection
Condensation Control
Process Control
Freeze Protection
Noise Control
Fire Safety
Providing cost-effective insulation for usage by common
public thereby providing relief from extreme climatic
conditions.
The important parameters and characteristics of thermal
insulations include:
Thermal Conductivity
Maximum Operating temperature
Thermal Transmittance
Water Vapor Permeability
Water Absorption
Fire Resistance
Smoke Properties
Compressive Strength

Resistance to Vibration and Jolting

Corrosion Behaviour
Chemical Resistance
Radiative Properties

The quality of thermal insulation is of prime importance for its

effective usage and unless we evaluate and test the insulation
properties and characteristics, which help to achieve the
quality, there is little chance of improvement of their
performance. Also in order to compete globally, it is essential
that properties of insulations be evaluated for acceptability
according to various national and international standards. In
this regard, a central and neutral facility for the testing of
various properties of thermal insulation materials was required
to be created in the country.
In order to fulfill the above requirements, a proposal under the
National Facilities in Engineering and Technology with Industrial
Collaboration (NAFETIC) Scheme was submitted to the All India
Council for Technical Education (AICTE) for the establishment
of the Laboratory. The proposal was accepted by AICTE which
has partially funded the Laboratory. Also this project is in

collaboration with industries and MoUs have been signed with

more than 30 industries including Amol Dicalite Ltd., Lloyd
Insulation Ltd. etc. for its effective utilization and support. The
total cost of the project is more than Rs. 160.00 lacs. The
Nirma Education and Research Foundation (NERF) has funded
the major expense of the Laboratory besides providing all the
infrastructure needed for the establishment of the Laboratory.
The prestigious set up at this laboratory consists of Guarded
Hot Plate System which is used for determining thermal
conductivity of insulations in the temperature range of - 20C
to 550C and conductivity range of 0.015 to 2.5 W/mK,
according to ASTM C 177 and ISO 8302 within an accuracy
of 4 %. The laboratory is equipped to test various salient
properties of thermal insulations on test set ups prescribed by
Bureau of Indian Standards and according to the procedure
laid in the standards.
The Institute of Technology, Nirma University is represented
by a faculty member being one of the members of CHD 27
Thermal Insulation Sectional Committee of the Bureau of
Indian Standards (BIS).

Salient features of Guarded Hot Plate Method for thermal conductivity determination include:
It is an absolute method for the measurement of the thermal conductivity of thermal insulation material.
The most common measurement consists of symmetrically arranged guarded hot plate where the heater assembly is
sandwiched between two specimens. The guard heaters provide a unidirectional transmission of heat and prevent the heat to
flow in other directions.
Thermal conductivity, k = heat flux/temperature gradient
Standards: ASTM C 177 ; ISO 8302 ; BIS 3346 ; BS EN 12667
