Even though Gods Word clearly teaches that we are three-part beings, very few
Christians practice a functional understanding of spirit, soul, and body in their everyday
lives! Most people actually only believe theyre only made up of body and soul !hey
confuse soul and spirit as being basically the same thing !herefore, on a day-to-day
level, they only ac"nowledge a physical part and an emotional, mental, inner part
#commonly called $personality%&
Even Strongs Concordance fails to distinguish all three! !he Gree" word for
spirit-
pneuma- is defined as being $the immortal soul% ' dont mean to critici(e anyones wor",
but my study of Gods Word has revealed a very distinct difference between spirit and
soul !herefore, ' disagree with this particular definition of the word pneuma )our
spirit is your innermost part, not your $immortal soul%
)our body is obvious 'ts the physical part of you that can be seen in a mirror 'f you
were tal"ing to me face to face, youd be seeing my body
*owever, youd be spea"ing to my soul, which is my mental, emotional part +ome
people define $soul% as being the $mind, will, and emotions% While thats certainly
true, its incomplete because your conscience should also be included )our soul is what
most people call their ,personality%
No Natural Access
)ou can feel both your body and your soul 'f ' put my hand on your shoulder,
youd "now that ' touched *owever, ' can also touch you whether 'm physically near
or not -y spea"ing to your soul, ' can ma"e you glad, sad, or mad !hrough my words '
could $hurt% you without physically touching your body 'ts easy to "now how you feel
in your body and soul because youre constantly in touch with them!
-y ta"ing a mental inventory, your body can instantly tell you how it feels )ou

if your adrenaline is pumping, if youre tired, if youre healthy or fighting a cold, if your
head aches, or if the showers .ust right 'n fact, you dont even really have to thin" about
it, because your body constantly feeds you such information
)ou can also chec" your soul and "now right away how youre doing 'ts easy to tell
if youre happy or hurt, mentally warn out or sharp and ready to go, or .ust plain angry
)oud even be aware of fear or depression if it came, because youre always in touch
with your soul
*owever, your spirit cannot be accessed in any natural way /esus declared0
$hat which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of
the ,pirit is spirit! #/ohn 102&


*e meant that theres no direct connection between the two !hey are interrelated, as
youll later see, but spirit is spirit and flesh is flesh )ou simply cannot contact your
spirit through your emotions or your physical body *erein lies one of the great problems
of the Christian life!
'f you dont understand that spiritual reality cant be felt, then youll be confused when
Gods Word declares that you have the same power that raised /esus from the dead #Eph
3034-56& 'f you thin" truth can be discerned through your natural senses, then youll be
baffled when the -ible says that youre a brand-new creature who can do the same
miraculous wor"s that /esus did #5 Cor 7038 and /ohn 39035& Without understanding
spirit, soul, and body, youll search your body and soul in bewilderment wondering,
Where is it? I dont really have that kind of poer in me. !he "i#le is so hard to
understand$ 'f you cant see, taste, hear, smell, or touch what the Word reveals about
you, youll immediately be thrown into conflict !his apparent disparity between your
e:perience and Gods Word will cause you to throw up your hands in frustration and
conclude, $'t must not be true!%
Unlocking the Spirit Realm
;nderstanding spirit, soul, and body unloc"s the spirit realm so you can e:perience
who you are and what you have in Christ!
+ince the spirit realm cant be naturally seen or felt, the only way to accurately
perceive spiritual truth is through the -ible +imply ta"e Gods Word and believe it!

Gods Word reveals spiritual reality 'f you want to "now what your spirit is li"e, you
must find out from the Word )ou cant .ust go by emotion or some other type of
perception Gods Word is spirit and life!
When you loo" into the -ible, you behold yourself in the spirit
/or if any man be a hearer of the word* and not a doer* he is li.e unto a man
beholding his natural face in a glass' /or he beholdeth himself* and goeth
his way* and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was% 0ut whoso
loo.eth into the perfect law of liberty <Gods Word--specifically the =ew
!estament>* and continueth therein* he being not a forgetful hearer; but a doer

Gods Word is a spiritual Mirror!
A Perfect Reflection
When you loo" at your face in a mirror, you arent really seeing yourself ?ather,
youre viewing a reflection 'n fact, your eyes have never loo"ed directly into your own
face !hin" about it--youve always seen a reflection! Even though its only a
representation, youve learned to trust it
'f you want to "now if your hair is combed or if your ma"eup is on, you dont .ust go
by how you feel +ince those things cant be felt, you must loo" in a mirror and then trust
what you see 'ts the same with your born-again spirit!
Gods Word perfectly reflects who you are in the spirit 'ts the only way you can
"now )ou cant .ust assume $'f ' had Gods power inside of me, 'd be aware of it,%
because that which is +pirit is spirit and that which is flesh is flesh! 't would be li"e
trying to feel if your ma"eup was on or if your hair was combed !hose things .ust cant
be felt! )ou must loo" in Gods mirror and trust the spiritual reality you see!
