You and I have agreed to code messages by multiplying the message matrix on the LEFT, by the matrix A. In other words, if
M is the message matrix, and C is the coded message matrix, then C = A M

Question 4: [17 marks]
A company produces two types of candy, A and B. Studies in the popularity of these candies show that the number of Type B
minus the number of Type A sold (per year) cannot exceed 10,000 units. Also, Type A will not sell more than twice as many
units as Type B. The company has a binding contract with a local supplier and has to provide at least 8,000 total units of
candy to it each year.

Unfortunately, the candy of Type A is popular because it is sold very cheaply, at a loss of $150 per thousand units. The profit
on candy B is $120 per thousand units. Let O be the optimal profit for the company, while x and y represent the number of
units (in thousands) produced of Type A and Type B candies, respectively.

4a) Clearly indicate the objective function O in terms of x and y. Simplify your answer.
What 3 conditions must be satisfied, in addition to the two obvious ones given below?

[2 marks] [6 marks]
The objective function is: The constraints (conditions) are: 0 and 0 x y

4b) Sketch the feasible region (use the grid provided on the next page), clearly indicating the corners. In the box
provided on the next page, specify if the feasible region is SHADED or UNSHADED. Show your work here!

optimal profit and how much of each type of candy needs to be produced to achieve it? Write a concluding sentence.

Question 5: [a total of 16 marks]

A simple economy consists of two sectors: lumber and steel. Suppose that the lumber industry produces 90 units of material
for its own use, 105 units for the steel industry, and had an external demand of 165 units. Meanwhile, the steel industry
produced 40 units for the use of the lumber industry, 70 units for itself, and 100 units for external purposes. The input matrix
for this economy can be written as:
Lumber Steel External demand Total
Lumber 90 105 165 360
Steel 40 70 100 210
Other 230 35
Total: 360 210
This is equivalent to saying that to produce one unit of lumber requires unit of lumber and 1/9 unit of steel, while making
one unit of steel requires unit of lumber and 1/3 unit of steel.

a) Write down the Leontief matrix A for this economy. Note: X = AX + D
