FAO Estimates India 2014 Paddy Rice Production at 157.5 Million Tons,
Down 1% from Last Year
Jul 28, 2014

The UN's Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) has estimated India's 2014 aggregate paddy rice
production (including the ongoing 2014 main and the 2014-15 secondary seasons) at around 157.5 million tons

(around 105 million tons, basis milled), down about 1% from around 159.43 million tons (around 106.29
million tons, basis milled) produced in 2013 due to expected impact of El Nino on paddy rice
production. Planting for the 2014 main Kharif season paddy crop (mid-May - December), which was
significantly delayed due to below-average monsoon rains in main rice producing areas in June and early July,
is underway. According to official estimates, planting for Kharif rice has reached around 16.571 million
hectares of rice area as of July 25, 2014, down about 16% from around 19.638 million hectares planted during
the same time last year. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the cumulative rainfall for
the country as a whole from the beginning of the monsoon season (June - September) has been around 25%
below the normal levels. The monsoon deficit had been about 45% until June ending. Resuming of monsoon
rains since mid-July over the main eastern and central crop-producing areas helped improve soil moisture and
permitted rice transplanting operations to pick up.India exported over 10 million tons of rice in 2013 due to a
bumper harvest in 2013 and large carryover stocks. However, this year's exports are likely to slump due to
expected decline in rice production.
The retail rice prices in June remained stable in most markets supported by the government's ongoing
procurement program. The government aims to procure around 34.5 million tons of rice by the end of 2013-14
marketing year (October - September). According to official sources, India average rice prices stood at around
Rs.2,898.6 per quintal (around $482 per ton) in June 2014, slightly down from around Rs.2,915 per quintal
(around $494 per ton) in May 2014 and up about 7% from around Rs.2,709 per quintal (around $446 per ton) in
June 2013.USDA estimates India 2014-15 (October - September) paddy rice production at around 156 million
tons (around 104 million tons, basis milled), down about 2% from an estimated 159.45 million tons (around
106.29 million tons, basis milled) in MY 2013-14. It estimates India to export around 10 million tons in 2014.

Sri Lanka to Import 50,000 Tons of Rice from India
Jul 28, 2014
Sri Lankan Cabinet has approved the recommendation of the Ministry of Internal Trade
(MoIT) to import around 50,000 tons of rice from India to make up for shortfalls from
production, according to local sources.Sri Lanka paddy production from both 2014 Yala
(April - September 2014) and 2013-14 Maha (September 2013 - April 2014) seasons is
likely to be severely affected by prolonged drought in the North Central and Eastern
Provinces.
According to a MoIT Spokesperson, the Ministry, the imports are also expected to help curb price hikes as well
as to fill shortages occurring from hoarding of stocks by some traders. He noted that the special commodity levy
imposed on rice, which was reduced in April this year to Rs.5 per kilogram to combat shortages in the market,
will continue till the end of this year to manage market prices.

The UN's Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) estimates Sri Lanka to produce around 2.65 million tons

estimates Sri Lanka to produce around 2.8 million tons of rice, basis milled, in MY 2014-15 (October 2014 -

Homegrown GM Rice Found in Chinas Supermarkets
Jul 28, 2014
Three out of five bags of rice randomly picked at supermarkets in the central Chinese province of Wuhan in
Hubei were genetically modified (GM) rice. This comes as a shocker to China because the government had
never approved either the sale or cultivation of GM rice. This is the second time that Hubei recorded the
presence of GM rice. In May, environmental organization Greenpeace said it found four out of 15 samples of
rice on sale in Wuhan with GM materials. Greenpeace said that the three Bt63 samples was from Huazhong
Agricultural University.Farmers in the district admitted that Bt63, a GM rice variety known to be pest resistant,
offered farmers savings of about 200 yuan per mu (0.67 hectares) of land. Investigations revealed that the sale
of GM rice seeds are happening on the sly in the district. In the neighbouring village, it is available for 80 yuan
per kilogram, Chinas CCTV reported. In the 90s, seed companies could effortlessly acquire Bt63 as regulations
were lax. They can cultivate the crop and sell the seed to farmers as the samples are not tested for GM content.
Surprisingly, its not just in China but Chinese imports also reportedly have been found to contain GM seeds.
Now, the European Union insists on a certificate of approval before Chinese rice products are imported to the
continent. In China, All GMO rice is approved only for scientific research, not for commercial purposes.

FAO Forecasts Venezuela Rice Imports to Increase in 2014
Jul 28, 2014

forecasted Venezuela to import more rice in MY 2014-15
(July - June) based on MY 2013-14 import data.
Venezuela's total cereal imports, including rice, increased to
around 4.7 million tons in the just-concluded MY 2013-14
