The use of email as a communications medium in business has arguably surpassed the use of telephony in importance and
ubiquity. It is therefore critically important to ensure the availability and security of this communications medium.

The availability of email can be threatened at a network level by copious amounts of unsolicited spam messages that clog
system servers and resources, consume considerable amounts of bandwidth and reduce mail system effectiveness. The
availability of email can also be threatened at the user level by creating an unusable scenario of mailboxes so congested with
spam, that legitimate email becomes difficult to identify. With numerous sources citing the percentage of spam email to be
over 90 percent of all email traffic, effectively blocking spam is an absolute requirement in networking.

In addition to spams ability to affect the availability of email, spam also brings increased security risks. Spam is used to
transmit viruses that can cripple networks, while phishing attempts to convince users to divulge sensitive information leading

Fortinets FortiMail-400B is an email security gateway that is deployed in front of email resources and servers to block spam
and viruses from email systems. Through the integration of numerous ICSA Labs certified spam and virus recognition

setup wizard and basic-mode GUI, the FortiMail-400B brings the simplicity of deployment and use that medium-sized

FortiMail and FortiGate, Together or Alone
Fortinets FortiGate multi-threat security appliance can be
deployed at the network perimeter, and offers centralized
spam database lookup capabilities. Because FortiGate is a
perimeter device, it is designed to pass traffic quickly to avoid
latency. FortiMail appliances are deployed not at the
perimeter, but in front of email servers to act as an email
gateway. Because email is not latency-sensitive, additional
spam and virus inspection methodologies can be employed
to increase accuracy rates. The FortiMail systems additional
antispam and antivirus technologies provide the deepest level
of protection specifically designed for email systems.
FortiMail and FortiGate can be deployed independently, or in
tandem to provide the highest levels of mail security and
throughput.


FortiMail Family of Appliances
Fortinets FortiMail-400B is one of several FortiMail models
designed to protect networks of all sizes. Varying models
incorporate various HD capacities, port counts, and mail
processing speeds to provide email security for the smallest
of networks to the largest carrier and service provider
