Son
Lois Lowry
*"Written with powerful, moving simplicity, Claire's story stands on its own, but as the
final volume in this iconic quartet, it holistically reunites characters, reprises
provocative socio-political themes, and offers a transcending message of tolerance and
hope. Bravo!"Kirkus, starred review
Told in three parts, Lois Lowrys Soncombines elements fromthe first three novels in
her Giver Quartet into a breathtaking, thought-provoking narrative that wrestles with
ideas of human freedom. Thrust again into the dark, claustrophobic world of The Giver,
readers will meet an intriguing new heroine, fourteen-year-old Claire. Jonas from The
Giver is here, too, and Kira, the heroine of Gathering Blue. In a final clash between good
and evil, a new hero emerges.
Lois Lowry is a two-time Newbery Medal winner for Number the Stars (1990) and The Giver
(1994), the first dystopian novel in a quartet that includes Gathering Blue, Messenger, and, as of
fall 2012, Son. She now divides her time between Cambridge, Massachusetts, anda
1769farmhouse in Maine. Visit her website at www.loislowry.com.

Ball
Mary Sullivan
A 2014 Theodor Seuss Geisel Honor Book
A hilarious debut.Publishers Weekly, starred review
A dog with a ball is one of the most relentlessly hopeful creatures on earth. After his
best little-girl pal leaves for school, this dog hits up yoga mom, thebaby, and even the
angry cat for a quick throw. No luck. Forced to go solo, the dog begins a hilarious one-
sided game of fetch until naptimes wild, ball-centric dream sequence. The pictures
speak a thousand words in this comic book style ode to canine monomania. Ball? Ball.
In her formative years, Mary Sullivan spent a great deal of time drawing. She received a BFA from
the University of Texas at Austin, and has shown her work in galleries and coffee shops in Dallas
and Austin. A freelancer for publishers from Pearson to Scholastic, she lives in Cedar Park, Texas.

Twenty-Five Animals Tell Us Why They Look the Way They
Do
Steve Jenkins and Robin Page, illustrated by Steve Jenkins
Dearaxolotl: Why do you have feathers growing out of your head?
Axolotl: They aren't feathersthey're gills! They let me breathe underwater.
Let's face it. Even as babies, we humans pay close attention to faces. Observing another
person's features and expressions tells us whether they are happy, angry, excited, or
sad. And when we look at an animal, it's hard not to imagine that its face is
communicating human feelings. This isn't true, of course. Squinty eyes, an upturned
mouth, or another odd expression is probably there because, in some way, it helps that
animal survive.
Packed with many coolfacts and visuals on where certain animals live and what they
eat, this book capturestwenty-fivehumorousand very trueexplanations of why
animals look the way they do in order to exist in this world.
Steve Jenkins has published more thanthirty books on the HMH list, with cumulative sales of
over 2.5 million copies. He has illustratedsixteen books for other publishers. Winner of a
Caldecott Honor, two New York Times Best Illustrated awards,a Boston GlobeHorn Book
Award, and numerous other honors, Steve is one of the top nonfiction author-illustrators working
today. Robin Page, Steves wife and sometimes collaborator, has been a coauthor with him on

The Misadventures of Sweetie Pie
Chris Van Allsburg
From two-time Caldecott winner Chris Van Allsburg, creator of Jumanji and The Polar
Express, comes a poignant story of one hamsters struggle with destiny. Being a pet store
hamster isnt much fun for Sweetie Pie, but life in human homes proves downright
perilous. As Sweetie Pie longingly gazes out of his cage at the squirrels frolicking in the
trees, he wonders if hell ever have the chance to feel the wind in his fur. Allsburgs
expressive, soft-hued illustrations artfully capture a hamsters-eye view of the wide and
wonderful world where maybe, just maybe, Sweetie Pie could someday run free.
Chris Van Allsburg, a two-time Caldecott artist (and winner of a Caldecott Honor for The
Garden of Abdul Gasazi), was awarded the Regina Medal for lifetime achievement in childrens
literature. He lives in Massachusetts with his wife and two children. Visit his website at

Draw What You See
The Life and Art of Benny Andrews
Kathy Benson, illustrated by Benny Andrews
Benny Andrews loved to draw. He drew his nine brothers and sisters, and his parents.
He drew the red earth of the fields where they all worked, the hot sun that beat down,
and the rows and rows of crops. As Benny hauled buckets of water, he made pictures in
his head. And he dreamed of a better lifesomething beyond the segregation, the
backbreaking labor, and the limited opportunities of his world.
Bennys dreamstook him far from the rural Georgia of his childhood. He became
one of the most important African Americanpainters of thetwentieth century, and he
opened doors for other artists of color.Hisstory will inspire budding young artists to
work hard and follow their dreams.
Kathleen Benson is the coauthor of many picture books, including John Lewis in the Lead, which
was illustrated by Benny Andrews. She lives in Manhattan.
Benny Andrewsillustrated more than twenty books for children, including Poetry for Young
People: Langston Hughes, for which he was awarded a Coretta Scott King Illustrator Honor.

Leopardpox!
Orna Landau, illustrated by Omer Hoffmann
Leopardpox! shouts Mama when her little girl becomes a frisky leopard cub. Now
what? Mama and Sadies three brothers take Sadie to the doctor, who says, Im not a
doctor for leopards. Then they try the vet, who says, If this is a leopard cub, its a
healthy leopard, but ifthis is alittle girl, then she is very ill. The zoo would be happy to
keep her, but no one likes the idea of leaving her behind. No, decides Mama, theyll
take care of her at home, where rest and kindness work wonders. Explosively funny,
slightly retro-looking illustrations accompany the laugh-aloud text, which takes a sly dig
at the medical extablishment while affirming the power of comfort from Mama. And

Number the Stars 25th Anniversary
by Lois Lowry
This 25th anniversary edition celebrates a true milestone for this Newbery Medal
winning classic with a fresh new look and an introduction by Lois Lowry.Thistime-
honored story champions a young girl's bravery and good will in helping her best friend
survive in a veryunwelcoming, war-tornworld.
As the German troops begin their campaign to relocate all the Jews of
Denmark, Annemarie Johansens family takes in Annemaries best friend, Ellen Rosen,
and conceals her as part of the family.
Through the eyes of ten-year-old Annemarie, we watch as the Danish
Resistance smuggles almost the entire Jewish population of Denmark, nearly seven
thousand people, across the sea to Sweden. The heroism of an entire nation reminds us
that there was pride and human decency in the world even during a time of terror and
war.
Lois Lowry is a two-time Newbery Medal winner for Number the Stars and The Giver, the first
dystopian novel in a quartet that includes Gathering Blue, Messenger, and Son. She divides her
time between Cambridge, Massachusetts, and a 1769farmhouse in Maine. To learn more about

Beetle Busters
Loree Griffin Burns, photographs by Ellen Harasimonwicz
The Asian longhorned beetle (ALB) has made news across the United States. These
beetles came to America from China, living in wood turned into shipping material. At
first the beetles invaded urban areas, where hardwood trees were in limited supply
Chicago was able to declare itself ALB-free in 2006. But right now there is bad news in
Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, and Torontoinfestations have erupted in the
areas hardwood forests, and these beetles, while bad at flying, are very good at killing
trees.
Clint McFarlands job? Stop the ALB at any cost. How do you balance the
needs of residents, the impact to the environment, and an invasive species primed to
wipe out entire forests? It takes the help of everyday people, such as children playing
baseball at a playground, teams of beetle-sniffing dogs, and science-minded people (bug
scientists and tree doctors) to eradicate this invasive pest.
Loree Griffin Burns, Ph.D., did her doctoral studies (in various kinds of biology) at the
University of Massachusetts Medical School. Ms. Burns lives in Massachusetts with her husband
and three children.
Ellen Harasimonwicz's photographyhas appeared in the Washington Post, Scientific American,
Down East, In Touch Weekly, the Harvard Press, and Audubon Adventures. She lives in central
Massachusetts.

their mysterious connection drives this unflinchingly tough, tender novel told in two
voices.
