UNC Charlotte Parking
Here at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte there is an issue that many people
have concerns and questions about. This ongoing issue that is familiar with majority of the
students is known as Parking. There have been plenty of complaints from students here at
UNC Charlotte because they are receiving multiple tickets and fines throughout the school year.
Not so much as professors, but students, especially incoming freshman or new transfers have this
problem. Students need to be aware of all the flaws, advantages, and disadvantages of parking.
Also, there is different type of parking tickets such as full year parking passes that cost $450,
partial year passes cost $280, and daily temporary permits cost $6. The statements below will
answer if not all, most of the questions that UNC Charlotte students wonder about when it comes
to discussing parking to prevent them from receiving any more fines.
First, students need to know the history on UNC Charlotte parking. An interesting fact
that people may not know is that parking used to be free. There was no fee at all, so students
were able to park anywhere free at charge, but thats if they could even find a parking space near
their next class, or near their dorm, or even find a parking space somewhere on campus. So, if
students could not park close enough to their destination it defeated the purpose of the UNC
Charlotte parking system. For in an article it clearly said, The UNC Charlotte parking system
Wynn 2

was established to provide adequate parking facilities for faculty, staff, and students within
convenient walking distance for their classrooms, offices, and residence halls at the lowest
possible cost (Parking). So, for students wondering, its easily to infer why parking is not free
and now as of today costing $450 to purchase a single pass. .
Now, just like any other college, UNC Charlotte population grew every year and
eventually like the population started to cause more and more problems. This article stated how
UNC Charlotte began to grow rapidly, getting more and more students every year meaning that
they had to build more parking spaces because the more people means the more cars on campus.
This is proven when a newspaper article that states, People complain constantly that they had to
park in Podunk Charlotte because all of the decks and closer lots were full when they got class
(The University). Today, UNC Charlotte continues to expand every year, and this has caused
parking to no longer be free for students, teachers, or professors. Incoming freshman have many
questions coming into the school year like where to even buy a parking pass. For students
wondering, parking passes can be purchase at the Parking Services Office. Next, to add to that, in
the same article but different topic it states, In recent years no state funds have been available to
defray the cost of parking facilities at UNC Charlotte: consequently, capital improvements, as
well.those who use the facilities (The University). In further context, that statement
basically proves how UNC Charlotte does not get money from the state at all. Since UNC
Charlotte was not receiving funds from the state, this could be a big reason the cost of parking on
campus is so high. Now, students should understand and know that their money they are paying
for a parking ticket is being use good used for a good purpose and not just being wasted.
Now, there are plenty of questions that students think of when it comes to parking. While
this is true, there is UNC Charlotte website that has many recent questions that students have
Wynn 3

asked and all of them have been answered. For instance, a question was asked from a student
wondering if they could wait on their financial aid check so they would be able to buy a parking
pass. Their question was answered saying, If youre unable to purchase a permit before classes
and permit enforcement begins, you may begin, you may buy a temporary permit at the Parking
and Transportation Services Office. Price is $6 per day (Frequently). There are over 30
popular questions asked by students daily that are also asked on this website and all of them are
answered in complete details. Also, in a recent survey of twenty-five UNC Charlotte students,
75% were familiar with the price of a parking pass, and 0% didnt know where they should go if
they were to find a lost parking pass (Wynn). Overall, current students are familiar with how to
purchase a parking a parking pass, but are not familiar with specific procedures of Parking and
Transportation Services.
Furthermore, students see how the history of UNC Charlotte parking has changed over
the years. As stated above the students dont have full knowledge on UNC Charlotte parking and
need to use all their resources as possible to stay away from any citations that may lead to big
fees. To conclude, if students were to individually inquire more information about parking and
transportation services then they would be better informed about what to do in all situations
pertaining to parking services.
