Student E-Mail Responsible Use
Students will use SharpSchool as their school e-mail provider.
SharpSchool allows website administrators to regulate access,
intercept inappropriate e-mail, monitor individual student e-mail
accounts, and determine user privileges.
Students may only access their Sharpschool email account.
Do not share an e-mail password.
If a student shares his/her password with another person, he/she
is still responsible for what happens with his/her personal
account.
Never make plans to meet an online "friend" in person. If
someone online asks to meet in person, notify your teacher
immediately, so he/she can document the incident.
Never give out personal information like name, address, or
phone number.
Do not write, post, or attach anything inappropriate or unkind in
e-mail.
Always delete unknown e-mail attachments. They can contain
destructive viruses.
Refrain from writing in capital letters because readers might
perceive it as "SHOUTING."
Keep messages short and to the point. Always include a brief
subject in the subject line.
Do not "flame" (say something malicious) in an e-mail. Using e-
mail to threaten, intimidate, embarrass, or with intent to harm
another is a class C misdemeanor. (HB 2003)
Do not send "spam." Spamming is sending the electronic
equivalent to junk mail. (advertisements, jokes, chain letters, or
things that are of no real value to the individual)

The Castleberry "Connected Learning" Project
will provide students with
mobile connectivity to limitless information
that enables them to become
self-empowered learners.

From the Associate Director
of Technology Services:

Beginning in the 2010-2011 school year, Castleberrys
Connected Learning Project began to bring one-to-
one computing to the students at Castleberry ISD.
This year, every 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th grade student
as well as all students at REACH will be issued their own
netbook computer that he or she may use anywhere for
school-related assignments and projects. Eventually, the
program will be extended in phases to all 4th-12th grade
students.

Why the shift from traditional textbooks to one-to-one
computing? In order for students to be competitive in
todays global society, they need 24/7 mobile access to
the vast resources available online in order to learn new
things, collaborate with others, and be creators of
multimedia content. The National Technology Plan states,
The challenge for our education system is to leverage
technology to create learning experiences that mirror
students daily lives and the reality of their futures. The
Castleberry Connected Learning Project is our
roadmap to achieving this national goal.

Castleberry is committed to providing our students with
the best technology and learning opportunities that will
prepare them to be self-empowered learners throughout
their lives.

provided to the technology department. If a netbook is
proven to be stolen, students are still responsible for pay-
ing a $50 deductible before another netbook will be is-
sued. If the netbook is lost because of negligence, students
are responsible for the full replacement cost of the net-
book. Netbooks that are not returned at the end of the
year will be considered lost due to negligence.
Scheduled Evaluations: Random inspections of the net-
books will occur regularly. Students with damaged net-
books will be subject to fines and to disciplinary actions
outlined in the Responsible Use Policy, the Student Code

Security and Protection Measures
Responsible Use Policy
Annually, all students and their parent or guardian must
sign and date a Responsible Use Agreement (RUP) before
students are allowed to use the District network. This
agreement will list various activities prohibited in the use
of technology and explain some possible consequences of
misuse. In addition, students will attend a RUP orientation
taught by an Instructional Technologist.
Netbook Security
Network policies are in place to prevent downloading or
installing software, removing software, or changing system
settings on the netbooks.
Filtering Software
Lightspeed filtering software will be active at all times on
District netbooks to block and filter inappropriate web-
sites on the Internet. Specific sites will be added and
blocked as reported by the Network Support Coordina-
tor.
Monitoring of Internet Use
All students must logon to the netbook using a valid Dis-
trict issued username and password. The technology staff
will periodically check for unauthorized site access which
will be identified by the username.
Internet Safety Procedures
Castleberry ISD is in compliance with the Child Internet
Protection Act and has a school board adopted Internet
Safety Procedure implemented.
E-mail Protection
The use of e-mail by students will be primarily used for
educational purposes. The student e-mail system is fil-
tered prior to delivery to individual accounts.
Castleberry Connected Learning Project Page 4
Student Responsibilities
Students must participate in a netbook orientation to
ensure that they are familiar with their roles and
responsibilities prior to taking possession of the
netbook.
Students are responsible at all times for their
netbooks.
Students are required to bring their netbook to school
each day and take it with them to each class.
Each netbook must be carried in a school provided
bag.
Students may not loan the netbook or its components
to other students for any reason.
Never leave a netbook unattended. Netbooks left
unattended at school will be taken up to avoid theft.
Students are responsible for charging and maintaining
batteries in netbooks daily.
All students have access to a digital locker and
document folder in which to store data.
Netbooks are the property of the district and are
imaged with the CISD approved software. Netbook
software may not be changed or personalized in any
way.
All power chargers are assigned by serial numbers. If a
charger is turned in that does not match the database,
it will not be accepted, and students are responsible
for the replacement cost or purchasing a charger from
CISD.
Missing netbooks must be reported immediately to a
campus assistant principal in writing by completing the
missing netbook form.

police report to document evidence of theft. It is the
responsibility of the student/parent to provide the
report.

Parents are responsible for monitoring students use of
the netbook at home at all times. Use of the netbook
outside of the school day must still meet all sections of
the Responsible Use Policy.
Parents are asked to monitor their students activities
on the Internet on a regular basis. Remember, parents
are responsible for overseeing their childs use of the
Internet while at home.
If a netbook is lost or stolen, parents will be required
to contact the assistant principal within the school and
complete the appropriate form.
If a netbook is stolen, parents will be required to
obtain a police report. They should then contact the
assistant principal, complete the appropriate form, and
supply a copy of the police report. The assistant
