MASTER PROGRAMME IN

COMPUTER SCIENCE
120 credits
work with a developmental project in
collaboration with private industry.
This project is followed in the last term
by a master thesis that can be carried
out in industry or at a university. Many
students choose to do their master the-
sis outside Sweden, and it is common
that the thesis serves as a gateway to the
labour market.
Sino-Swedish specialisation in Computer
Science and Software Engineering
This specialisation is offered jointly by
Uppsala University and Tongji University,
Shanghai, China. The student takes the
first year at Uppsala University and the
second year at Tongji University.
The focus is placed on courses in com-
puter science and software engineering,
supplemented with courses of a cultural
nature, such as languages, economy or
intercultural relations. You may create
your own specialisation by combining
courses individually.
Concurrency and Parallel Programming
The performance of modern computers
increase by the possibility of performing
more and more operations in parallel,
instead of performing single operations
faster. This is true for laptops as well as
huge cloud servers. Parallel program-
ming is becoming inevitable, but is still
an activity performed by experts only.
How to effectively program the machines
of tomorrow with thousands of proces-
sor cores is still an open question. This
programme is tied to and largely run by
researchers from the UPMARC research
centre (http://upmarc.se). This center is
at the international forefront of program-
ming of parallel machines, todays as well
as tomorrows.
INSTRUCTION
The Master Programme in Computer
Science offers every student an individ-
ualised study plan that induces excellent
learning opportunities. However, this
requires that you are willing to work
hard and have the ability to take personal
responsibility for your education and
your learning.
The forms of instruction and examina-
tion vary and are adapted to the charac-
ter of the various subjects. This implies
that laboratory work and small projects
are found in most courses, while certain
courses have major projects.
Since the Sino-Swedish specialisation in
computer science and software engineer-
ing is taught jointly at two universities
(Uppsala University, Sweden and Tongji
University, Shanghai, China), you will
meet industry and research from two dif-
ferent cultures. You will have the oppor-
tunity to live in these cultures, and thus
The Master Programme in Computer Science offers a broad education
with an emphasis on knowledge and analytical skills, providing a sustain-
able value. Each student gets an individual study plan and the opportu-
nity to create his/her own specialisation. All courses focus on problem
solving and general principles rather than particular programming
languages or hardware platforms.
ABOUT THE PROGRAMME
The programme offers a wide range of
courses in computer science. All students
can create their own specialisation by
individually combining courses. Most
courses integrate theory with practical
exercises.
Your choice of courses depends on your
background knowledge and personal
interests. By selecting suitable courses,
you can become specialised in different
areas of computer science.
The programme has three specialisations:
Computer Science specialisation
The objective of this specialisation is to
provide an individualised world-class
education. During the first two terms,
you may choose, together with a tutor,
courses from the following subfields:
Programming languages, Software engi-
neering, Parallel programming, Data
communication, Databases, Data mining,
Algorithms, Real-time systems, Com-
puter architecture, Artificial intelligence,
Human-computer interaction, The third
term normally consists of a major project
course where a large group of students

APPLICATION
Admission for the autumn semester.
Application deadline is 15 January.
Application through the website
www.universityadmissions.se.
REQUIREMENTS
A bachelor degree, equivalent to
a Swedish degree of at least 180
credits, (i.e. three years of full-time
studies) including at least 90 credits
in Computer Science: Programming,
Algorithms and Data Structures,
Computer Architecture, Operating
Systems, and at least 30 credits in

FEES AND SCHOLARSHIPS
There is a tuition fee and application
fee for students who are not citizens
of the EU/EEA or Switzerland. For
these students the tuition fee for
this programme is SEK 145 000 per
academic year. The fee for application
to Swedish universities is SEK 900.
Uppsala University offers scholarships
to cover the tuition fee,
see www.uu.se/scholarships.
The Swedish Institute also admin isters
scholarships, see

The master programme in computer
science gives you the freedom to choose
your own specialisation by selecting
courses as you wish. The education is
adapted to your prerequisites and inte-
rests. An individual study plan is created
for all students in the beginning of the
programme.
You can for example choose courses
from following subfelds:
Programming languages
Software engineering
Parellel programming
Data communication
Databases
Data mining
Algorithms
Real-time systems
Computer architecture
Artifcial intelligence
Human-computer interaction

form close ties with two cities in differ-
ent countries which in turn will open
doors in an international labour market.
DEGREE
The programme leads to a Master of
Science (120 credits) with Computer
Science as the main field of study.
The Sino-Swedish specialisation also
offers a further degree Master Degree
in Software Engineering from Tongji
University in addition to the masters
degree from Uppsala University.
CAREER
The Master Programme in Computer
Science provides you with the oppor-
tunity to work in a number of different
areas. Job opportunities are abundant due
to the increasing dependence on comput-
ers in all sectors of society.
You subsequently obtain considerable
potential to determine your own future,
and to constantly be on the front line of
developments.
Master students in computer science are
attractive on a highly qualified interna-
tional labour market. Demand for skills
in the field of computer science is con-
siderable, and will grow due to the com-
puterisation of society.
Most of our students work in the com-
mercial IT sector as project managers or
consultants in advanced product devel-
opment or applied research, where they
participate in the development of future
products.
A number of students start their own
company to develop ideas and concepts
acquired during their education. The pro-
gramme is also an excellent preparation
for PhD studies.
