ext month will see St Davids
Hospice Care celebrate thirty-
ve years of offering excellent,
personal in-home palliative care to the
people of Gwent.
Established in 1979 by Heulwen
Egerton MBE, a nurse tutor at Newports
Royal Gwent Hospital as the Gwent
Hospice Project Group, during the rst
year of operation St Davids Hospice
Care cared for six patients.
Over the last thirty-ve years, St
Davids Hospice Care has grown to
become the UKs largest provider of
hospice at home care, caring for more
3,200 patients and families every year,
at a cost of over 7.5 million.
The vast majority of the 7.5 million
required to run St Davids Hospice
Care comes from charitable donations,
with funds continually raised by kind-
hearted people in all sorts of ways right
throughout the year. Why dont you see
how you can get involved?
HERE ARE SOME IDEAS!
Use the Shops
St Davids Hospice Care have a
network of 38 charity shops, offering
some fantastic bargains at very
reasonable prices. The shops sell a wide
range of goods, and are always very
pleased to accept donations of good
quality clothes, books, bric-a-brac and
furniture.
Become a regular giver
A regular gift by standing order even
as little as 1 per week is a great way
to help St Davids Hospice Care. Its
convenient and easy as you specify the
amount and leave the rest to us. You can
amend or cancel the donation at any
time. As an example, a regular donation
of 5 a month means we would have
60 a year towards our aim of bringing
care home when its needed most.
Fundraising
Each year, St Davids Hospice Care
holds numerous fundraising events.
Theres an event for everyone, from
coffee mornings to parachute jumps! If
youd like to know whats on, contact the
fundraising department, who can let you
know whats coming up in the next few
months. Failing that, you could organise
your own event.
Leave a legacy
You can remember us in your will if
you wish. You may choose to leave a
donation of a specic amount, all, or a
share of, the residue of your estate or
perhaps even a particular item. Legacy
income funds 1 in every 20 of our
patients and can make a very important
difference in peoples lives when it
matters most.
Join the St Davids Hospice
Care lottery!

a chance of winning one of 24 great

his months big thing is undoubtedly
the V Awards and the South Wales
Next Top Model Competition.
The 2014 awards are the tenth Vs and
to celebrate well be holding a fantastic
bash at The Celtic Manor in October.
The V Awards started life as a much
quieter affair than it is now. The rst one
was held in The Riverfront where we gave
out just a hand full of awards in a small
ceremony that carried on to The Murenger
afterwards. It quickly grew in popularity
with the number of guests climbing from
100 to around 400 within three years.
Its still hugely popular, as regular
readers and businesses who advertise with
us will know. We get tens of thousands of

Newport City Councils Second
Chance reuse shop opened with
great success last month.
Throughout its first day 50 items
were sold which saw a staggering
half a ton of goods diverted from
landfill, giving unloved items a
second chance.
Based at the household waste
recycling centre in Docks Way,
the shop opens every Wednesday
between 10am and 3pm with a
range of products from golf clubs
to furniture available. It will also be
selling bedding plants, shrubs and
logs for wood burners.
All the money raised will be
put back into the running of the
facility and help council tax rates for
Newport remain low.
The council provides a bulky
collections service for people unable
to get larger items to the site. For a
small charge, items can be picked
up and either given a second chance
or disposed of properly. To arrange
a collection visit www.newport.gov.
uk, select request it and fill out the
form, or call 01633 656656.
Why not look out for items of
the week on social media Twitter:

Welcome. Im Martin Tresidder, Senior Development Manager for
Queensberry Real Estate and Im pleased to be able to bring you the
latest news straight from the Friars Walk construction site. This month
we are going to focus about what is happening on site.
I am based in the Chartist Tower, directly overlooking the
development, together with the QRE team and the main contractor
Bowmer and Kirkland. I have responsibility for the overall
management of the development, covering everything from
managing our contractor, design, procurement, legal agreements,
integration of our tenants within the scheme and commercial
matters. Its an exceptionally challenging and varied role but also
extremely rewarding. It is truly an amazing opportunity to deliver a
redevelopment such as Friars Walk that will put the heart back into
Newport city centre.
We took over the site from the Council in March this year and
since then we have made some great progress, existing buildings have
been demolished and cleared to make way for the development. We
have dealt with a number of challenges in the ground and are active
across the entire site.
Bowmer and Kirkland and the sub contractors currently have over
100 operatives on site and this will increase to around 400 over the
coming months. Some key elements of the project have been awarded
to local companies including the electrical and mechanical work as
well at the main foundations and earthworks.
As most people will have seen, the Debenhams building steelwork
started back in June and is advancing very well, if you look closely,
you can see that we have installed pre formed concrete staircases and
lift shafts at the same time as the steelwork. This helps us build the
buildings quicker and more efficiently. Shortly steelwork will start
on the southern end of the site where the cinema and restaurants are
located.
It is amazing to watch the progress on site, there is clearly a real
demand for regular updates and images and thats why we regularly
tweet the latest construction images as there are often major physical
changes weekly.
Our take a peek holes are proving very popular with residents and
businesses too and thats why we recently added another eight around
the site.
All the very latest information including pictures, video
footage and the live webcam can be viewed on our website www.
friarswalknewport.co.uk or get more updates on Twitter
via @QberryRE
Martin has over 27 years in the construction industry and has
worked on a number of successful major UK and international
developments including the award winning SouthGate shopping

Celebrating
One Hundred Years
ASSOCIATED BRITISH PORTS (ABP) PORT OF NEWPORT, LAST MONTH,
MARKED THE CENTENARY OF THE COMPLETION OF THE SOUTH DOCK AND
THE OPENING OF THE SOUTH LOCK WITH A CELEBRATION AT THE PORT.
T
he South Lock was officially opened on 14
July 1914 by Prince Arthur of Connaught,
the grandson of Queen Victoria. Lord
Tredegars steam yacht The Liberty became
the first ship to pass through the Lock, when it
transported Prince Arthur to the docks during the
celebrations.
At the centenary celebrations, dignitaries and
visitors were treated to the unveiling, by the Mayor
of Newport, of a commemorative mosaic by local
artist Stephanie Roberts, who worked with the
local community and ABP employees to make the
installation. The mosaic, which depicts a modern
and early 20th century dockworker, perfectly
encapsulates the celebration of old and new. The
mosaic will be will be permanently displayed on the wall of the
Newport Mission to Seafarers and is available for public viewing.
The premier of an animated film about the history of the port,
made by local school children from Pillgwenlly Primary School,
was also unveiled as part of the development of
resources that other schools will use in the future.
Guests were also invited to tour the port, which
has grown from Wales foremost coal port to one of
the UKs leading steel handling ports and a world
leader in new industries such as metal recycling.
Today the Port of Newport is thriving, said
Matthew Kennerley, ABP Director South Wales.
Thanks to the dedication of those who have worked
here throughout the years, the loyalty and support
of our customers, together with the continued
investment in the ports development, we are able to
offer world-class facilities which help our customers
develop their businesses and compete internationally.
But we wouldnt be here today without the
ambition and vision of those people who originally invested in the
creation of the docks in Newport. Today I am proud to say that we
are continuing to invest in the ports future prosperity.
In the past 18 months ABP has invested more than 10m in the

for Wedding Business of the Year.
Since collecting the award, Cherils business

The story of Cherils business reads like a
fairytale. The business was born when Cheril made

she decided to take the plunge and open up her
own wedding shop.
Ten years on, and three V Awards later, having
been located on Victoria Street, Cwmbran, since

PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE YEAR
W
e caught up with the ever-smiley
Nick Murray to talk to him
about his 2013 V Awards win and to
nd out his tactics to win again this year.
V: Whats it like being a multi-V
Award winner?
N: Its an incredible honour. It really
is. It means so much because hugely
nice people take time out of their busy
day to open up that form and vote for
you. I also know the thousands upon
thousands of votes the V Awards gets,
so its such an epic feeling when people
really appreciate your hard work over
the past year.
V: Would you like to win one
again in 2014?
N: I would love to! Aside from it being
at a 5 star venue this year, The Celtic
Manor (hope the canaps
are good), Ive worked
incredibly hard and Id like to
think my work is even better
than last year. There are so
many great photographers
in south Wales, and
competition is insanely
tough, so to win would be
the cherry on the cake of my
busiest and most creative
year yet!
V: Why do you think
your clients take the
time to vote for you?
N: Id love to think its because Ive
captured their wedding day like nobody
else could. Photography is my life,
and I dedicate a huge portion of it to
making my clients images the very best
they can be. Im constantly evolving
as a photographer and I try to pass
that creativity onto them through their
photographs. I try to excel in my work
and business, and hopefully my clients
see that too.
Keeping my ngers crossed for this year!

ago, Helen has gowned countless brides,
ower girls and prom princesses, offering
each and every one of them a wonderful,
bespoke service to ensure that they
feel their very best on their special day.
Offering bespoke and off-the-peg gowns,
whatever style youre going for, Helen will
ensure you leave the shop with the dress of
your dreams.
This year alone, Helen has dressed
more than 200 prom-goers and, thanks
to her dress registry, she ensured that the
same dress wasnt sold twice to girls at the
same school. She has also dressed many,
many brides.
Looking ahead, Helen will be
focussing on designing and making more
of her own creations, which will be for sale
in the very near future. Be sure to keep an

ENTREPRENEUR OF THE YEAR
T
he lovely Dave Greenhaf of Pure
Vans was elated to pick up the V
Award for Entrepreneur of the Year
back in 2013, and cant wait to try
his luck at the 2014 awards.
The result of four years of graft
and dedication, Dave had a huge
number of votes, which is no doubt
testament to the levels of hard work
he puts in to the business.
When I found out about
winning the award I was initially
excited, and then very pleased and
proud that all the hard work put into
making the business a success had
been recognised, he told us.
We are fully customer focussed
and we put ourselves in the position
of the customer to ensure the sale
runs smoothly from start to nish.
The last year has been quite
exciting for Pure Vans. The busiest
year for the business yet, growth
locally has been incredible, with
the Pure Vans team working with
more and more local businesses
by the week. The business has also
got involved with Newport County
in recent weeks a very exciting
development for life-long supporter
Dave.
We like to make sure that
the customer benets fully from the
substantial discounts we obtain
and hopefully our customers
recognise that, and thats why they
voted for us.
With a combined experience
in the industry in excess of three
decades, the Pure Vans team can
also offer valuable advice regarding
funding purchases.
So, will Dave be going for a V
again in 2014?
Of course we will - but not for
the same award, he said. Once
youve won it, youve achieved a
goal and its time to let someone
else be recognised for their effort
and success.
So, yes and Id like to ask all

A
former sales manager from
Newport, Rehan Rasul, has been
helped to set up his own business a
sh and chip shop after receiving
investment support from the Welsh
Governments business start-up service
through local provider, the Centre for
Business.
The shop, based on Malpas
Road, was already a thriving business
and had been acquired as a going
concern by Mr Rasul in November
2013. However, a 15,000 investment
received from the Start Up Loan
Company as part of its package of
support through the Welsh Government
Start up Scheme with Centre for
Business as a delivery partner
provided Mr Rasul with the necessary
investment to nalise the business
refurbishment and rebranding, including
a new name, Salt & Vinegar.
After 12 years working as a
sales manager for a renewable
energies company, Mr Rasul took the
entrepreneurship leap and followed
in his fathers footsteps by owning and
operating his own sh and chip shop
business.
Mr Rasul said: Its a fantastic
feeling to be my own boss. My father
had run a successful sh and chip shop
before he retired and hes over the
moon to see me follow in those same
footsteps.
Whilst leaving the security of a
full-time role was daunting at rst, the
one-to-one support from the Welsh
Government Startup service via Centre
for Business, the investment from Start
Up Loan Company, the bank and my
family gave me the boost I needed
and also the nances to acquire the
business, as well as to make my own
mark on it straight away.
Mr Rasul had been working with
the Centre for Business since December
2013 in relation to his Start Up Loan
application. As Lloyds TSB had already
extended Mr Rasul the mortgage to
purchase the business and the property
as freehold, the Start Up Loan would
provide the capital needed to ensure
that refurbishment works could continue
and the relaunch of Salt & Vinegar
could take place.
Rehan continued: Newport
Council initially signposted me towards
the Centre for Business when I was
looking into the nancial investment
available to complete the Salt &
Vinegar transformation. My advisor at
the Centre for Business was great and
guided me through the application
process without any hassle. It was a
great feeling when I got the call to
say that my Start Up Loan had been
approved and we could get things
nalised.
Since opening in January, we
have had a fantastic reception from
locals, who were familiar with the
previous business, and we have
been busy every day. Long may that
continue.
Start Up Loans, CEO, Tim Sawyer
said; We were delighted to help
Rehan follow in his fathers footsteps.
His business is a great example of
the range of different start ups we
are providing capital and support to.
Everyone at Start Up loans is thrilled
with the progress he has made so far,
and we wish Rehan, and Salt and
Vinegar, every success for the future.
Salt & Vinegar is Mr Rasuls rst
business venture and he hopes to
purchase a second sh and chip shop
within three years as part of his business
plan to further expand the Salt &
Vinegar chain.
Id love to open a chain of Salt
& Vinegar shops across Newport but,
for the moment, Im concentrating on
promoting my current shop to locals
and want to make it the chippie of
choice. Expansion is certainly part of
the plan though.

I
ts only recently that Ive started thinking about it and
although it worries me a teeny tiny bit, I havent done
much about it. However, after experiencing this months
Tried and Tested I think all of that is about to change.
I booked in with owner Lauren at Facial Attraction,
New Inn, for a Perfector Therapy non-surgical face lifting
treatment. Having recently undergone new training,
Lauren was excited to show me just how powerful the
treatment is.
Perfector micro-current therapy is a structured six-stage
anti-aging treatment, using special combinations of micro-
current, frequency and waveform. These work on all levels
of the skin, soft tissues and muscle bres helping to speed
up cellular activity, increasing the local metabolism and
re-educate the muscle bres. Lauren used a collagen gel
with the treatment to moisturise and enhance the results.
All in all the treatment takes around an hour. It starts
with a cleanse before the probes come into play. As
I said, this is a six stage facial, and as Lauren took me
through the various elements I could feel changes in my
face almost immediately
The most interesting part for me was the lymphatic
drainage. I genuinely did not realise how much uid I
was carrying around my eyes, sinuses and other parts
of my face. It was a huge surprise, but as Lauren worked
through I could see that it was making a real difference.
Less caffeine and more water for me from now on, I think.
Surprisingly, given that the treatment uses probes,
there is no pain or, as I expected, electric pulsing or
clicking. The treatment is smooth and totally pain free. Its
quite relaxing.
There are two different strengths of treatment
available. I wont go into electrical terminology, but to put
it plainly, one treatment uses two probes, the other uses
four making it twice as strong. Lauren started my treatment
with the two probes before using all four to nish.
Once completed, I could instantly see the difference
in my face. My skin felt plumper and looked fresher.
My eyes were lifted and I certainly didnt look or feel
anywhere near as puffy as I did before we started.
Afterwards, I could really feel the difference it kind of
felt that Id been smiling all day. It felt great, and my eyes
felt considerably less tired.
I chose not to tell my husband about what Id had
done, but when I got home (and this is no word of a
lie) he did notice, commenting; what have you done to
your face? You look younger on the top half! If that isnt
testament enough, I dont know what is.
So, I have resolved to treat myself to a Perfector once
a month or so, its that good. Why not try it and nd out
what I mean?
Lauren offers all sorts of Perfector packages and
treatments. They can either be booked as a course as
a one-off, or with an Environ product for extra amazing
results. Book your Perfector treatment at Facial Attraction

LIFT ME UP
Ok, so I admit it, my age and my lifestyle are starting to take their toll on me a little. Two kids,
full time work, a very poor skincare routine and too much caffeine have left my face puffy and,
although I hate to say it out loud, I have a couple of lines too!

strength Perfector non-surgical facelift at

salon of the month
Owner and top hair stylist, Dean Poole, of Deans Hair and
Beauty in Oakdale, was recently awarded 1st place in the
Top Current Trends category at The Welsh Open Hairdressing
Championships, 2014.
DEANS HAIR AND BEAUTY
D
ean is no stranger to to winning
awards, as hes picked up so many
throughout his 32 year career in
hairdressing.
I couldnt believe it when I won, it was a
complete shock! said Dean.
It was a spur of the moment
thing to enter the competition; I
entered on the Monday and by
the following Sunday I was in
Cardiff at the nals!
I took inspiration from the
latest summer fashions, which are
extremely vibrant and full of lots of
strong, bold colours.
I couldnt decide on one particular
colour, so thought to myself why not use them
all? So I did!
The outcome was fantastic, but it took a
lot of hard work to achieve. I worked with on
the model nearly every night after the salon
closed to get the colour perfect.
For those of you who dont know,
The Welsh Open Hairdressing
Championships incorporates
hairdressing, barbering, and
for the rst time ever this year,
beauty.
This years ceremony was
held at Cardiff City Stadium, in
conjunction with the Wales Hair
and Beauty show, on Sunday June
29th.
The new format competition was an
intense affair, with competitors from all over
the UK and further aeld, all competing for
the coveted Welsh Champion titles, which this
year covered a record of fourteen different
categories.
Dean has been running his successful hair
and beauty salon in Oakdale, Blackwood for
twenty-eight years, and hes very grateful for
the continued support from his extremely loyal
clientele.
Hes previously held the title of Welsh
Champion on three separate occasions,
but has not competed for some years until
recently, which led him to another win.
During the past few years Dean has been
judging regional and national competitions,
and also teaching and judging at local
colleges.
At the salon he has a young and vibrant
team of stylists, colourists, beauticians and also
a barber, who offer all aspects of ladies and
gentlemens hairdressing, as well as beauty
treatments and tanning.
It was a great experience for my team to be
part of the competition, to see how the industry
works and view work from all over the UK.
Hopefully it will inspire them to enter themselves
next year, added Dean.
I believe in teaching my team that anything is
possible, no matter your age or ability, as long as
you have passion and a drive for something that
you believe in, you can achieve your goals.
Deans Hair and Beauty is situated at 4 Central
Avenue, Oakdale, Blackwood NP12 0JU. For
more information about the salons services and to
book an appointment, call 01495 221787.

P
hotographer Jacob McCarthy recently
opened his new photography studio in
Newport Arcade. Located at the top end of
the city, on High Street, Jacob is currently the only
photographer who has a walk-in studio in the city
centre.
We caught up with Jacob to talk to him about his
new business.
First of all, call me Jake, Jacob sounds way
too formal! Thats the rst thing you notice when
you meet this talented young man, hes extremely
friendly, condent and has a very relaxed
approach.
I rst got into photography about ve or six
years ago, whilst I was studying for my GCSEs.
My rst camera was a Christmas present and from
that point I started taking photos of my family and
portraits for my friends, he told us.
After learning all I could about photography
during my A-levels and at college, I became more
and more condent at my craft. I then worked as
a photographers assistant learning all the ins and
outs at a successful studio, and during my time there
it eventually made me want to open a place of my
own.
Id say that Im inspired by Jasmine Star shes
a famous bridal fashion photographer. Her work is
simply amazing and one day I hope to be on a level
with her.
Although Jacob is only eighteen he has already
taken photographs for numerous weddings and
specialises in tailor-made packages to suit the needs
and budget of his clients.
The trick for any photographer is to make a
trusting relationship with the client, that way Im
able to create a lasting memory by capturing their
personality with a truly unique image that they can
treasure forever. said Jake.
At his studio in Newport Arcade you are invited
to come in and have a chat, look through Jacobs
extensive body of work, and talk about what youd
like to achieve. Whether youre looking to have a
family portrait done, start your modelling career
with a stylish portfolio, take photos of your newborn
baby, or maybe have some shots done with the

MOTORPOINT:
TRANSFORMING THE WAY PEOPLE BUY
THEIR CARS IN SOUTH WALES
Motorpoint has transformed the way in which
Welsh motorists have bought their cars since opening
its doors on the Queensway Meadow Industrial
Estate in Newport almost a decade ago. Our tireless
campaign to wrestle control from the manufacturers
and their dealer networks, and create a simple and
straightforward transparent pricing policy, has helped
Motorpoints customers in South Wales save over
500m off the recommended retail price during this
time.
Led by Russell Louth, General Manager, the
Motorpoint Newport team has access to over 4,000
new and nearly new low mileage vehicles from 35
different manufacturers including Audi, BMW, Citroen,
Ford, Hyundai, Peugeot, Renault, Vauxhall, Volvo and
VW. Prices start from just 4,999.
However, having the cheapest cars isnt enough.
The experience that comes with selling so many
cars has taught us that simply being the cheapest is
not sufficient. We dont make our customers choose
between great service and low prices; we strive to
create the best car buying experience for each and
everyone of our customers.
This is why Motorpoint is the UKs leading car
supermarket - selling a vehicle to a customer every five
minutes. Why not pop down to Motorpoint Newport
and experience our multi award-winning service
for yourselves. Were open 9am 8pm weekdays,
9am 6pm Saturday and 11am-5pm on Sunday.

The beaches developed by Beach Events have been used at the Olympics, in addition
to popular festivals such as the Isle of Wight, and were thrilled to be able to bring it to
Cwmbran.
To have 150 tonnes of sand in the centre of Cwmbran is be fantastic for the local
community. The beach will allow people to enjoy a white sandy beach without having to
travel far afeld.
Bob Wellington, leader of Torfaen council, said: People fock to Cwmbran Shopping
from across the region and this wonderful beach initiative for their Summer Fun
campaign is an exciting addition to the attractions in Cwmbran.

T
his month sees the commemoration of the
start of World War 1. There will be activities
happening right across the country, so we
thought it right and proper that we should dedicate
this months Get Outside to some of the activities
happening in Wales throughout August.
The National Museum of Wales have a whole
host of activities programmed. Seven of the
national museums are exploring the impact of the
war at home and abroad through a programme of
exhibitions and events.
Looking at how and why the people of Wales
responded to the call of war, the experience of living
through the war at home, and those fighting and
working in the arenas of war, the museums will also
show how Wales was transformed through changing
skills, attitudes and beliefs during and after the war.
The museums will explore different opinions
about the war through the collections to help
understand why it happened, the key events and its
legacy today.
One of this months free family events is a
poppy harvesting event at the museums urban
meadows to make seed packages to help establish
other urban meadows. Why not get outdoors and get
involved?
You can keep up to date with information
and events, and share your own memories and

Reach Their Dreams?
SOUTH EAST WALES ADOPTION SERVICE
WHEN I NOTICED THAT A NEWSPAPER
HAD FILED ITS NATIONAL ADOPTION
WEEK COVERAGE IN ITS WOMENS
SECTION, I FIGURED IT WAS TIME TO
WRITE ABOUT ADOPTION AND DADS.
Now, it turns out that there was a technical/
editorial reason for the papers decision, rather than
a blind assumption. But it still made me think back
to a support meeting for adopters a few years ago.
Another Dad mumbled to me that adoption
its more about the mothers than us dads really.
Lukewarm church hall coffee nearly exploded
through my nose.
As a new dad, I knew how wrong he was.
Adoption is brilliant for dads. We get to be equal
opportunity citizens in the process of creating our
families from beginning to the end. Admittedly,
biological dads get an important job to do at the
absolute beginning, but for a period of months
after that their role is mostly a junior one. But we
adoptive dads get equal billing on the movie poster.
No midwife ignores us while she discusses placenta
encapsulation or breast pumps with our other half.
No adoptive dad has to lurk around the maternity
ward grinning like a chump whilst waiting for
someone to give him something to do.
Its often said that the assessment
process is a kind of pregnancy. At times
it can feel drawn out, there are highs
and lows, and the outcome is uncertain.
But this is a pregnancy shared equally
between the male and the female of our
species. We do our half of the paperwork,
were there at every social worker
meeting and we go to court together. If
we do find ourselves bombing through
unfamiliar streets in our small hatchback
(were going to have to get a bigger
car), its not midnight and nobodys
waters have broken, its mid-morning and
were late for panel and the mum-to-be
is driving.
Its hard work. But theres a payoff.
Like any other Dad, we get to push a stroller, or
perhaps walk hand in sticky hand with our new
family member and in shops we get to experiment
with strange new phrases like my daughter or
our son (what we really want to say is my
spectacular daughter or my beautiful son but
we have to bottle up the best adjectives for private
enjoyment, most of the time, or else we get strange
looks).
And if youre really lucky, like me, one
day several months into the placement you
stagger in through the door after a day at
work and the newest, craziest member of
your family will open their lungs and shout
daddydaddydaddydaddydaddydaddydaddy!.

T
his is a fantastic opportunity to spend a day
with a member of the Greenmeadow livestock
team to get more of a behind the scenes feel
for the farm.
Farmer For a Day is aimed at children aged
between eight and thirteen, and due to popular
demand, the farm is now also offering the same
experience to adults! The day starts at 9.30am and
usually finishes at around 3 or 4pm.
Voice got the chance to have a go at being a
farmer for the day, with children Sam and Sophie
from Raglan.
We were greeted by Dean, who joined the
Greenmeadow team last September, who gave us
clean overalls and wellies to put on.
Dont worry! says Dean. They wont stay clean
for long!
After Dean instructs us in the safety precautions of
being on the farm, our first visit is to the chicken pen
to see if the hens have laid any eggs, before cleaning
them out and giving them fresh food and water.
Next we visit some pigs, which definitely need
some cleaning!
I know its a mucky job, but someone has to do it
and look after the animals! proclaimed Dean.
Once the pigs were cleaned and fed, we moo-ved
on to the next task, which was milking a cow in
the barn in front of a large crowd, filled with eager
families waiting to see Daisy.
Dean shows us all how to milk a cow by hand,
then everyone was invited to come up and have a go
for themselves. He then showed us how to extract the
milk more efficiently by using a machine.
Dean told us that we couldnt milk the cow too
much as she needed it to feed her baby calf.
Last but not least, we checked to see if the goats,
sheep and cows had fresh straw in their troughs,
plenty of fresh water and gave them all their hard
feed, which is full in nutritional value and vitamins.
The best bit of the day for me was feeding the
hungry pigs! Sam told Voice.
My favourite animals were the goats, they were
so friendly and they let me stroke their heads! said
Sophie.
The day was udder-ly brilliant and very
rewarding! I definitely recommend it to anyone who
loves animals.
The next scheduled day for children is on Tuesday
August 12th, and for adults its on Sunday September
7th. Spaces are limited to six persons per group, so
dont miss out - call today to secure your place for
this fantastic day of fun.
Farmer for the Day is priced at 40 for children
and 50 for adults. Coming very soon there will
be a special family bundle offer, where parents and
children can experience what its like to be a farmer
for a day together.
So, if youre looking to do something different
then why not take this opportunity to try something
new? And, if you just cant get enough, each Farmer
for a Day experience will have a different theme and
focus, so you can visit again and again!
Greenmeadow Community Farm is located at
Greenforge Way, Cwmbran NP44 5AJ. Whatever
the weather, the farm is open from 10.00am until
6.00pm.

It is one of the largest single day shows in Wales and is a
major event for the exhibiting of livestock. Top class cattle,

es and, in some instances, for qualifying places into such
national events as the Horse of the Year Show at Birming-

each year covering a wide range of different breeds.
In the Country Matters Ring there will be entertainment,
with displays from Chris Green Countryman and Meirion
Owens Quack Pack among others. New to the Country
Matters Area in 2014 is the Poultry Show and the Sheep
Show and this year we also have Radio 2s Allotment Doctor
Terry Walton visiting, so there really is something for every-
one.
2014 sees the popular return of The Broke FMX Motor
Cycle Display Team to the Main Ring, a freestyle motocross
team who will amaze crowds of all ages.

wide array of attractions, dont miss it!

This years Pill Carnival is being held in honour of

She will be accompanied by five court leaders and five

Founded in 2007 by owner Nick
Clothier, the dealership has gone
from strength-to-strength thanks to
a proactive and modern approach to
used car sales.
You will fnd our range of
cars mainly as Audi, BMW and
Volkswagen, plus we carry a good
range of Ford, Seat, Volvo, Audi and
Jaguar, Nick told Voice.
The key ingredient for the
maximum achievement of sales is
how we treat our customers.
First and foremost we never use
pushy sales techniques - we feel our
cars will sell themselves based on
price condition and quality.
96% of our customers dont look
elsewhere. Using the old saying word
of mouth we make sure that our
after sales and customer care is the
best it can be with a very fair and
considerable approach to resolving
any issue our customers may have.
As a Black Horse approved dealer
and a Moto Novo supporting dealer,
there are plenty of fnancing options
available, which can be tailored
to your individual needs and are
competitive with high street banks.
If you have had enough of your old
car and feel you want to change then
you can easily part exchange any
make or model.
On Saturday 13th September
well be at the annual Usk Show, so
why not come and pay us a visit? We

T
he fleet of high-performance Extreme 40
catamarans is set to return to Cardiff Bay,
as the centerpiece to the Cardiff Harbour
Festival over August bank holiday, 22-25
August. In 2013, in excess of 120,000 people
flocked to the bay over the four day event to
enjoy the excellent views of the racecourse, and
festival atmosphere. Also 2014 is expected to be
bigger then ever with Americas Cup winners,
Olympians and World Champions amongst the
11 elite level teams preparing to compete in the
only UK leg of the 2014 global tour!
One of three British skippers is the worlds
greatest Olympic sailor, Sir Ben Ainslie. He
will field an all-British team, J.P. Morgan BAR,
including two-times winner of the Series and
Americas Cup sailor, Nick Hutton. Hutton is
no stranger to the Series but racing in the heart
of Cardiff will be a first and he says Cardiff
Bay ticks all the Extreme Sailing Series boxes, it
offers great racing on a really compact piece of
water - its stadium racing at its best. Its our first
time competing in Cardiff and we will be there
racing amongst it - the restaurants, bars, shops
- which will give a real buzz. The British and
the Welsh love their sport so it would be great
to see as many people on the shore watching the
racing. Its always nice to race in front of a home
crowd and we are really looking forward to being
there.
Back on land the Harbour Festival has fun for
everyone! See the Roald Dahl Plass transformed
into an urban beach, explore the Continental
Markets or just grab a drink and a bite to eat and
enjoy the live music and entertainment. For more

his wonderful new shop, located on
Commercial Street in Risca, is lled with
a wide range of vintage and shabby
chic furniture and accessories for the home,
which have been beautifully restored and
upcycled by David and Tracy.
Were here to give classic pieces of
furniture a new lease of life by upcycling
them by hand at reasonable and affordable
prices, said Tracy.
The couple started thebusiness as a
hobby, painting old family furniture in their
shed in the garden. Friends and family were
so impressed by the pairs work that they
were quickly given commissions to do more.
As the business grew, selling items online
and using Facebook, David and Tracy
acquired a large workshop where they could
keep up with the demand.
After a long hard think, they both decided
to quit their jobs, David an RAF Engineer who
has worked all over the world and Tracy a
youth offender consultant, to do this full time.
On Saturday 5th July they opened Busy
Bees to showcase their fabulous work.
Every week we have a new piece,
whether its a new item that needs to be
up-cycled or nished product to be viewed in
store or online, David told Voice.
No two items are ever the same; we
create one-of-a-kind pieces of furniture using
paints and oils.
Not only do David and Tracy seek out
and nd interesting pieces to work on, they
also take on commission work to up-cycle
family heirlooms, such as old tables and
chairs, cupboards, dressers and cabinets.
As well as offering a wide range of
furniture and accessories for the home,
they additionally offer a sweet cart, which
is perfect for weddings and other special
occasions. It costs 150 to hire the cart,
which is lled with your preferred choice of

LLANMOOR HOMES
F
ollowing the announcement of Bethesda
Field earlier this year, the house builder has
received very high levels of interest in this unique
development of detached, family homes.
Bethesda Field is located just off Cefn Road in the
village of Rogerstone, Newport and will feature just
twenty two 3 and 4-bedroom detached properties.
This development is set to further establish
Llanmoors reputation for providing high quality
homes in South Wales, as one of the only remaining
privately owned house builders in the area.
Established in 1966, Llanmoor Homes is directed from
its headquarters in Talbot Green by brothers Simon,
Tim & Matthew Grey, and is currently constructing
new homes at a total of six developments.
The rst homes have now been released for
sale, along with the opening of the temporary sales
centre on Friday 1st August. These include Llanmoors
popular 3-bedroom Ferndale and 4 bedroom
Llandow and Llancarfan homes, as well as the
Llanmaes with its bespoke double-glazed ash screen
and door in the living room, a design feature currently
offered by no other house builder.
The show home at the development is proposed to
be a Llanmaes and this should be open for viewings
during early 2015.
The rst releases have also seen the unveiling
of a brand new house type for the company, the
3 bedroom Pendoylan. The new design features
a spacious open plan kitchen & dining area and a
larger garage, providing more space for bicycles
and better accommodating the needs of the modern
family.
Prices at the development range between
235,000 - 320,000, dependent upon house
design, and rst occupations are scheduled for early
2015.
As part of the development, Llanmoor Homes
will also be bringing a number of benecial
incentives to the area, including acre of open
space within the development . In support of the
local community, the company will also be putting
205,000 towards improvement of both primary
and secondary education facilities, in addition to a
payment of 173,000 towards the improvement and
maintenance of leisure facilities at the nearby Welfare
grounds.
Tim Grey, Sales Director at Llanmoor Homes says:
Bethesda Field is one of our smaller developments
and the focus on 3 and 4-bedroom family homes
provides a unique product offering, which is why
it is already proving very popular with potential
purchasers. We are encouraging those with an
interest in buying here to get in touch with us as soon
as possible so as not to miss out.
It is very important to us to support the
communities and environment in which were building,
therefore in addition to nancial contributions and
providing on site facilities, we will also be creating
a woodland buffer zone adjacent to Cefn Wood to
ensure that this important woodland is protected for
the future.
For more details on the homes available at
Bethesda Field, please call the Llanmoor Head
Ofce on 01443 228413, register your interest at
the company website www.llanmoor-homes.co.uk or
visit the sales centre at the development which is open

FOR A
GREENER
BBQ
We now spend around 35 on food and drink on each barbeque,
with an average nine barbeques each, thats a whopping 315 a year.
If youre planning a barbecue this summer, Recycle for Wales has
some top tips on how you can save money and still have a BBQ
thats kind to the environment:
PLAN AHEAD: Tally up
your guest list before your
visit to the supermarket. That
way, you wont over buy and
have leftovers that may go to
waste. Cook only enough for
the number of people coming
along. This perfect potion
planner will help: www.

BE SPECIFIC WHEN
ASKING YOUR GUESTS
TO BRING A DISH TO

less waste and wont end up
with five varieties of pasta
salad that nobody wants to eat.

SQUEEZE ANY SPARE
OR PAST THEIR BEST
- lemons and combine with
a sprinkling of sugar and
sparkling water to make a
thirst quenching lemonade.
SAVE MONEY AND
DONT OPT FOR PRE-
PREPARED SALADS. Why
not make your own and put
it in a reusable container to
keep it fresh. Your own salad
always tastes better too!
LOVE YOUR BARBECUE
LEFTOVERS! Left over bread
rolls can be frozen, salads and
