Last Sunday evening, a

storm tore through the

city with winds in excess
of 60 miles per hour,
heavy rain and lightning
were also part of the show
Mother Nature provided
for residents.
The fallout of this in-
clement weather left trees
and limbs fallen through-
out the city.
Power was out to many
residents, and power lines
were down.
In times such as these,
the Forestry Division of
the citys public works de-
partment is called into ac-
tion.
We have to get out
there and remove the
trees that have fallen
across a roadway first of
all, DPW director Bryan
Babcock said. We proba-
bly had five streets that
were completely blocked
because a tree fell across
it, but weve had over
50-plus locations where a
tree has fallen and partial-
ly blocked a street or a
driveway or a sidewalk.
Were out there now try-
ing to get those taken care
of as quickly as we can.
Babcock said his crew,
which consists of about
five people, were on the
job moments after the
storm blew through town.
They started the night
the storm got going actu-
ally, he said. They fin-
ished just before mid-
night, then came back at 7
a.m. the next morning and
started again.
The importance of get-
ting the streets clear cant
be understated.
We need to get those
streets cleared, Babcock
said. Thats the priority.
People and emergency ve-
hicles need to be able to
get up and down those
streets as soon as possi-
ble. After that, we priori-
tize. Where the trees
have fallen and what is
blocked as a result serves
as the criteria for the order
which the clean up occurs.
Its definitely going to
take us a few days to get it
all cleaned up, he said.
Babcock said he and his
crew expect storms like
this every summer and
are prepared for the dam-
age.
We get them every
summer, he said. In the
middle of summer these
big trees, when theyre full
of leaves, and it rains like
it did, thats a lot of

Lake Shore Public
Schools recently an-
nounced the expan-
sion of its foreign lan-
guage program at ev-
ery level within the
district.
A partnership be-
tween the school sys-
tem and the popular
language-learning
software maker,
Rosetta Stone, has
added a new twist to
the Lake Shore pro-
gram this year.
Were actually do-
ing this for all ages
and grade levels, said
the districts assistant
superintendent
Donald Kling. Were
running it with
Rosetta Stone. Were
in the process of hir-
ing teachers to teach
this program to the
students.
Currently, the dis-
trict offers German,
Spanish and Chinese
(Mandarin) to stu-
dents as young as kin-
dergarten.
The addition of this
program allows Lake
Shore to tap into the
resources of Rosetta
Stone, resources that
may one day include
other languages.
That could be in
the future for sure,
Kling said of the addi-
tion of other foreign
languages to the ros-
ter of options students
can choose from at
Lake Shore. Right
now, our main focus is
the elementary school
levels. We have
German, Mandarin
and Spanish at the
high school. We have
Mandarin and
Spanish at the middle
school, and last year
we offered Mandarin
in the elementary
schools for the first
time. The addition of
this program is only
going to open more
doors up for our stu-
dents.
The program comes
from the districts rec-
ognition of two main
things, Kling said.
Its a global com-
munity were all a part
of now, he explained.
That, and learning a
language at a young
age, is very important.
Its amazing what
these young kids can
pick up, can learn.
Last year was the first
year for us teaching
Mandarin in the ele-
mentary schools. We
had parents coming
up to and telling us

For more than six de-
cades, every year, there
has been the crowning of
a new Miss St. Clair
Shores.
This year, in front of a
packed house at South
Lake High School, a new
Miss St. Clair Shores was
crowned.
That young lady is
Lauren Brown.
Were very excited to
have Lauren Brown as
Miss St. Clair Shores,
said Elizabeth Munger,
executive director of the
Miss St. Clair Shores
Program. Shes going to
be a great representative
of our city, and is very de-
serving of the title.
Brown was selected
from a group of nine com-
peting for the crown last
Saturday, July 26.
Along with the title,
Brown earned about
$2,000 in scholarship
money, and will represent
St. Clair Shores in the
Miss Michigan pageant
next June, Munger said.
What is really cool
about Lauren being
named Miss St. Clair
Shores, Munger said. Is
that she is the third Miss
St. Clair Shores to have
been named Little Miss,

how much they love the
program. The kids are
now talking to them in
Chinese. In fact, one of
them came up and told
us how her child sang

their other children
birthday in Chinese.
Lake Shore has
earned a reputation
within the educational
community as being a
leader in its internation-
al programs, something
the district is very proud
of, Kling said.
I think right now we
are in the lead in terms
of our international pro-
gram, he said. We get
phone calls all the time
from other districts ask-
ing us how we did this,
and how can they do it.
We understand how the
world has become a very
global community. Were
constantly looking at our
program and asking how
we can improve. How
can we make it better?
We think this program
with Rosetta Stone is
one of those ways of
making it better.
and Teen Miss, also.
Last years Miss St. Clair
Shores, Morgan Stocker,
was also a triple crown re-
cipient.
Also crowned at the
event was Miss Teen St.
Clair Shores.
This years honor goes
to Natalie Seese.
Seese will also represent
the city at a statewide
competition the Miss
Teen Michigan, which is
also held in June of 2015.
Rounding out the eve-
ning was the crowning of
Little Miss St. Clair
Shores.
Earning that distinction
this year is Emma Dell.
Were very proud of
each of them, Munger
said. It was just a great
evening. It really was.
Being selected Miss,
Teen Miss and Little Miss
comes with plenty of re-
sponsibility and obliga-
tion, including numerous
public appearances,
Munger said.
School comes first, of
course, she said. But be-
ing Little Miss, Teen Miss,
and Miss St. Clair Shores
does mean that you have
to be out there and making
public appearances.
Thats part of what it
means to have these ti-
tles.
The Miss St. Clair
Shores Program is among
the longest running local
Miss America preliminary
events in the country, and
the focus of the program is
to provide scholarship
money to recipients.
The programs main
fundraiser is the Lac Ste.
Claire Art Fair held at
Veterans Memorial Park.

weight. When that rain saturates those old limbs,
they can fall. Thats what happened in this case.
The city is responsible for the cleanup of trees
that are in the city right of way, Babcock said.
Trees between the sidewalk and the curb, he
said. Thats our responsibility. But, we at least
make the road passable if a tree has fallen from a
yard onto a street or sidewalk. We do have a large
brush pick-up service by Rizzo Environmental
Services.
Babcock explained that residents have to drag
the limbs to the curb, with the butt-end of the
branches facing the same direction, then call Rizzo
the day before their scheduled pick-up day, they
will come out with a chipping truck.
Rizzo Environmental Services can be reached at

become one of the more popular spots for golfers in the area. Reasonable rates,
plush conditions, and playability for every skill level add to the attraction.

Tom, one of 33 Chinese students attending Lake Shores Foreign Culture Camp, reads a book during one of
the morning classes.
Nearly three dozen
fourth and fifth grade
students from China
have been calling Lake
Shore Public School
home for the past sever-
al weeks.
These students are liv-
ing with host families
from within Lake Shore
district and beyond,
spending their morn-
ings at Masonic Heights
Elementary School
learning about the cul-
ture, the language and
other things all the
while interacting with
students from the
United States.
This entire experience
is part of the districts
cutting edge Summer
Foreign Culture Camp.
The students left
from China on July 3,
said Lake Shore Public
School Assi st ant
Superintendent Donald
Kling. They spent a few
days in New York, then
took a tour bus here.
Theyve been just about
everywhere since com-
ing here. They and their
host families are having
a lot of fun.
After their morning
session at the school,
the students head off to
some kind of field trip.
Theyve gone every-
where from Stony
Creeks Nature Center
to the Detroit Zoo to
bowling, Kling said.
Theres something like
this every day.

While afternoon field
trips are organized by
the district, however,
Kling said many host
families also spend time
showing the Chinese
students the area.
They take the kids all
over the place, Kling
said. The only rule that
we really have is they
cant take them out of
the country. But some of
them go to Cedar Point,
up north, to a Detroit
Tigers game. Our host
families really treat
these students like they
were their own kid. Its
great.
Lake Shore has done
this camp for the past
three summers, and its
success is measured in
the reaction of students
themselves.
Its great fun,
Chi nese st udent ,
Angela, said. We get to
spend time with our
friends and laugh and
have fun. There is some-
thing different and new
every day.
The students from
Chi na take more
Americanized names,
such as Angela and
Tom, for example, when
they arrive at the camp.
Every morning we
will eat breakfast at
school, Tom said.
Then we will have
some game like duck-
duck-goose, then we do
some activities. Its quite
fun.
GOLF COURSE
Continued from page 1A
to the rim of the hole, it
stopped inches short.
Shoot! his rolled his
eyes in disbelief, while
three of his friends
groaned at his near miss.
Ive had a good front
side, DeManix said. Im
enjoying myself here
once again. Of course, I
would be enjoying myself
more if that putt wouldve
dropped, but Im still hav-
ing a good time.
DeManix and the rest
of his foursome are
among the thousands of
golfers who tee it up at
the St. Clair Shores Golf
Club every season.
We get anywhere from
45,000 to just over 50,000
rounds each year here,
said pro shop manager
Rob Spinazzola. And we
count 9-hole rounds too.
The course, which was
designed by famed golf
course architects Jerry
and Bruce Matthews, is
approaching its 40th an-
niversary, which will take
place in the 2015 season.
The course measures
about 6,000 yards from
the blue tee markers and
5,200 yards from the red
tees, and, according to
Spinazzola, its a course
with every golfer in mind.
I think the best way to
describe it would be to
say its a course for the
people, he said. I would
take our municipal
course and put it up
against any other.
Russ McKenzie, 54,
agrees.
Ive played this game
for a long time,
McKenzie said. I think
this course is fair. For me,
an average golfer, thats
what I want. Thats how I
can have fun playing
golf.
Spinazzola said the
course is designed and set
up for a broad range of
golfers.
We have people out
there who think this is an
easy course, he said.
What I like to tell those
people is I think its a golf
course that caters to ev-
erybody. It caters to
young and old, and golf-
ers of just about every
skill level. I take pride in
the fact that we cater to
everybody and that every-
body can play our course
and enjoy it.
Over the years, the
course has received nu-
merous awards and hon-
ors and continues to be
one of the more popular
courses in the entire area.
Recent upgrades to the
course, including re-done
bridges, a partnership
with the Golf Association
of Michigan, and the
planting of numerous
trees have only added to
the experience.
The course also holds
true to the tradition of
walking the course if a
golfer chooses to a fea-
ture that is becoming
tougher to find.
You can certainly
come out here and walk
the course, Spinazzola
said. There are a lot of
courses now that arent al-
lowing that. I think being
able to walk promotes fit-
ness and thats a good
thing. I love that we allow
this here. Its part of the
experience, and we get a
lot of walkers too.
Despite the popularity
of the course, many resi-
dents simply arent
aware of the quality and
experience the course
can offer.
The first time I played
here was this year,
Donna Tocco said. And
now my girlfriends and I
play here twice a month.
Its a wonderful course.

dents and non-residents

1950s and early 1960s, is the newest addition to the Air Park at the Selfridge Military Air Museum. The F-89 on
display at Selfridge Air National Guard Base is the only known restored F-89 C model on display in the coun-
try, possibly in the world. It was restored by Selfridge Museum volunteers over the past two years.

Part of seeing a doctor
for health concerns is
feeling like the doctor
truly cares about your
health and medical
needs.
At Grosse Pointe
Medical Group in
Grosse Pointe Park, that
is exactly what patients
get. John Schwartz
M.D., owner of Grosse
Pointe Medical Group,
offers personalized, col-
laborative care with ev-
ery patient.
Schwartz graduated
from Case Western
Reserve University
School of Medicine in
Cleveland and specializ-
es in internal medicine.
He is currently affiliat-
ed with both Beaumont
Hospital, Grosse Pointe
and St. John Hospital
and Medical Center. He
has been in the practice
for 15 years and worked
at Henry Ford Hospital
for 13 years before
opening a private prac-
tice.
I really wanted to be
able to practice in a way
that brings back some of
the old-fashioned values
in medicine that empha-
size personal care and
less of an industrial
practice, Schwartz
said. (I wanted) more
of a hand-made, or pa-
tient-focused, practice
where I can spend as
much time with each pa-
tient as I feel necessary
and not feel rushed.
These old-fashioned
values include primary
care in which the patient
has one doctor with
whom they have a long-
term rel ati onshi p,
whether its in the office
or at the hospital.
Theres a community
of care, Schwartz said.
The idea of one doctor,
you know who your doc-
tor is, and youre going
to see that physician.
And that doctor knows
you and can really focus
on you.
Right now, Schwartz
is the only doctor at
Grosse Pointe Medical
Group, which is part of
the personalized ap-
proach he takes in car-
ing for his patients. This
way, he is able to cus-
tomize the practice to
suit the patients needs,
he said.
Ac c o r di ng t o
Schwartz, one of the
biggest benefits of see-
ing him at the medical
group is the unhurried,
personalized approach
and the fact that youll
have one doctor whom
you can have a long-last-
ing and caring relation-
ship with.
Rather than just a ge-
neric approach to deal-
ing with a patient, I try
to understand what
each patients individu-
al needs are and what
will work for them,
rather than just trying
to impose some sort of
treatment, Schwartz
said.
I try to work with the
patient to see what will
work for them. It tends
to be much more collab-
oration between the pa-
tient and myself.
In business since
January, Grosse Pointe
Medical Group is gener-
ally open from 9 a.m. to
5 p.m., but there is usu-
ally some flexibility to
do whatever is neces-
sary for the patients
needs since it is a small,
personalized practice,
Schwartz said.
Consultations are by
appointment, which pa-
tients can schedule at
(313) 469-8281 or by vis-
iting the office at 15120
Kercheval , Grosse
Pointe Park.

The best priced hearing
aids in town can now be
found at USA Hearing
Aid Services in
Eastpointe.
With more than 18
years of experience in the
hearing aid business,
Mirko Malovic M.D. of-
fers the best quality care
to his customers.
When (customers)
come in, they can expect
a free hearing exam,
screening or test, the best
technology and the best
price, Dr. Malovic said.
Most of the things they
are going to be able to ex-
perience in the office are
free. Only if I have to send
the hearing aid into the
lab will I have to charge.
Even then, it will be
cheaper than other plac-
es.
Dr. Malovic just opened
his practice in Eastpointe
after working as a li-
censed hearing aid prac-
tioner for three years in
Europe and 15 years in
the United States. He
worked in several areas of
Beltone Hearing Aids in
East poi nt e and
Southgate, as well as the
Earphonics branch in
Eastpointe.
Dr. Malovic graduated
from the University of
Sarajevo and received his
doctorate in hearing reha-
bilitation.
Even though USA
Hearing Aid Services is a
newly-opened business,
customers should choose
them because Dr. Malovic
has years of experience
treating patients with
hearing aid needs.
Customers simply wont
beat the quality of the ser-
vices and products any-
where else.
They are going to pay
less right here, Dr.
Malovic said. They are
going to get the best
European and U.S. tech-
nology and the best ad-
vice. (There are) free con-
sultations and hearing
tests, and they can get a
copy of the test to discuss
with a doctor or their fam-
ilies to decide what to do.

Pedicures are a great
way to relax and pamper
yourself, but oftentimes
traditional nail salons
dont take the necessary
steps to ensure a safe en-
vironment free of infec-
tion.
At the Foot Spa at
Eastside, clients can ex-
pect a clean, aseptic of-
fice with new instru-
ments for every client.
It has a boutique-type
setup, spa manager
Elena Panagopoulos
said. We serve two cli-
ents at a time, and instru-
ments are steroclaved
like at a doctors office.
Non-disposable instru-
ments are put into the
autoclave after every
use, Panagopoulous
said, so they are new for
every client. Disposable
tools are new for every
client as well, which they
can take home with them
if they wish.
Technicians at the spa
are very conscious of
keeping a clean, healthy
environment for their cli-
ents, so there is no cross-
contamination of tools,
instruments or products.
Employees are profes-
sionally licensed nail
technicians specially
trained by podiatrists to
treat different kinds of
nails. They attend lec-
tures and undergo train-
ing to learn the dos and
donts of treating clients
who are diabetic and
need special nail care,
Panagopoulos said.
The spa also offers
KERYFlex nail restora-
tion system, which is a
product avai l abl e
through the podiatrists
office. In as little as 15
minutes, clients with
fungal problems or nail
dystrophies can be on
their way to healthier
nails.
The podiatrist preps
the nails, then the tech-
nicians sculpt, shape,
buff and fill in the nails,
Panagopoulos said.
The Foot Spa at
Eastside is known for
using Gilden Tree or-
ganic products, and they
offer Dr.s Remedy
Enriched Nail Polish, an
organic polish infused
with wheat protein, tea
tree oil, garlic bulb ex-
tract and lavender,
which provides a
healthy alternative for
nail color.
It was formed by po-
diatrists and we have
been selling it for about
t h r e e y e a r s ,
Panagopoulos said. It is
organic and helps with
nail fungus. It comes in
28 colors and base and
top coats.
In comparison to oth-
er nail salons, the busi-
ness offers reasonable
prices, too.
We are very competi-
t i v e l y pr i c e d,
Panagopoulos said. We
offer promotions includ-
ing 20 percent off for
new customers and a
Pamper Me Pedi,
which is like a makeover
for your feet.
The Pamper Me Pedi
is great during the
rough winter months,
and the spa sees a lot of
men come in for this
t r e a t m e n t ,
Panagopoulos said.
The Foot Spa at
Eastside is a friendly,
cl ean envi ronment
where clients can relax
and expect their nail
needs to be met. They
take great measures to
ensure the office is free
of infection and offer
several products to pro-
vide patients with
strong, healthy nails.
The spa has been open
since July 2013 and is lo-
cated at 24025 Greater
Mack, Suite 101, St.
Clair Shores, within the
Eastside Podiatry office.
Appointments can be
made by calling (313)

SECTION B ST. CLAIR SHORES CONNECTION THURSDAY, JULY 31, 2014
Mitsubishi Mirage revamped for 2015
Achieving an EPA fuel mileage rating of up to 37
miles per gallon city and 44 mpg highway, the 2015
Mitsubishi Mirage is the most fuel efficient gasoline-
powered non-hybrid vehicle in the United States to-
day, with a combined fuel economy of 40 mpg.
The 2015 Mirages plentiful standard equipment
package, available upscale features and affordable
pricing, make Mitsubishis 5-door subcompact the
ideal new car for a wide array of automotive consum-
ers.
The manufacturers retail price starts at $12,995,
plus an $810 destination charge for the entry-level
Mirage DE; and $14,295, plus destination, for the up-
scale Mirage ES.
New Features for 2015 Mirage 5-door sub-compact
include new chrome interior trim accents for the au-
dio and HVAC panels and rear-mounted short pole
antenna for all models and new interior seat fabric
and side view mirrors with turn indicators for the
Mirage ES.
Equipped with Mitsubishi Innovative Valve timing
Electronic Control variable valve-timing system, the
1.2-liter 3-cylinder DOHC engine produces 74
pound-feet of torque with a choice of either a
smooth-shifting 5-speed manual or the advanced
continuously-variable transmission.
Mirages excellent efficiency can be attributed to
numerous engineering and design features including
an extremely low-drag exterior, Electric Power
Steering and a strong but lightweight body/chassis
fortified by Mitsubishis Reinforced Impact Safety
Evolution impact-absorbing safety cell
technology.
Standard safety features in-
clude seven air bags, including
drivers knee air bag; Electronic
Brake-force Distribution and
Brake Assist; a Tire Pressure
Monitoring System; and Active
Stability Control with Traction
Control Logic.
Numerous amenity and acces-
sory packages are available in-
cluding LED Illumination; Front
and Rear Park Assist Sensors;
exterior and chrome packages;
and a navigation package that
includes an SD Card-based navi-
gation system with rearview
camera available on the Mirage
ES model only.
Among the items included on
the DE trim level are a four-
speaker 140-watt AM/FM/CD/MP3 audio system
with USB input; automatic climate control; high-
gloss piano black center console trim; stylish rear
spoiler; keyless entry with panic alarm; tilt steering;
power windows with drivers side auto-up/down;
variable intermittent wipers; convenient split folding
rear seat; rear seat heater ducts; body-colored power
side mirrors, door handles and tailgate handle; plus
many other welcome features.
For $1,300 more, the Mirage ES adds a Bluetooth
hands-free phone system, One-Touch Start/Stop en-
gine switch, steering wheel-mounted audio controls,
Free-hand Advanced Security Transmitter, cruise
control; 14-inch aluminum alloy wheels, fog lights,
leather-wrapped steering wheel, shift knob and
more.
Every 2015 Mirage includes one of the best pro-
tection plans in the automotive industry: a
10-year/100,000-mile powertrain limited warranty,
fully transferrable five-year/60,000-mile new vehi-
cle limited warranty, seven-year/100,000 mile anti-
corrosion/perforation limited warranty and a five-
year/unlimited mileage roadside assistance pro-
gram.
The Mitsubishi 2015 Mirage was recently named
the most affordable vehicle shoppers can buy by
Cars.com. The online automotive resource took into
account minimum feature requirementsBluetooth
capability, USB port, power windows and door locks,
destination fees and anticipated five-year fuel costs
to calculate the most affordable vehicle to buy and
own.
The Mirage is built in Thailand.
