How can the air quality be monitored?
Industrial Methods of reducing TRS
Wet scrubbing
This is the method used for
purification of the air, and
gases of various pollutants.
The compound from the
flue gases is contacted with
a scrubbing solution. That
solution can be water or a
mixture of reagents that
reacts with target com-
pounds.
Dry scrubbing
Commonly, used to re-
move acid gases and
odours from waste treat-
ment plant. Caustic soda
or active alumina com-
pound is reacted with
waste material containing
TRS.

Above Hafiza Reebee at home in Shillong Road, Mere-
bank. Night-time emissions from nearby industry left many
people wheezing and exhausted after asthma attacks in the

What is total reduced sulphur (TRS)?

TRS are chemical substances composed of
hydrogen sulphide, dimethyl sulphide,
dimethiyl disulphide, mercaptans and other
compounds. They produce an offensive odour
similar to that of rotten eggs or cabbage.
Main sources of TRS:

Emissions (leakages) from
petroleum refineries
Natural gas plants
Petrochemical plants
Pulp and paper plants

Which industries release TRS?

ENGEN refinery, Sapref refinery and Mondi are
the ones that releases the highest levels of TRS.
The south Durban Basin is
one of the economic hubs
of South Africa mainly
because of its area
facilities; it is near the
harbor and has a railway
system.. Several industries
are confined in S.D.B
with highly populated
areas. Whil e t hese
industries have a positive
economic impact, they
contribute to several
negative impacts such as:
WATER POLLUTION
AIR POLLUTION
POOR HEALTH CONDITIONS IN THE
COMMUNITY
EXPOSURE TO FIRES, EXPLOSIONS,
PIPE LEAKS AND GASSING OUT.
As a result the fight for evironveeval ustaree
continues to be the cornerstone of the community
in the South Durban Basin.
Among the pollutants released to the S.D.B
environment there is TOTAL REDUCED
SULPHUR (TRS).
SOUTH DURBAN BASIN
TRS compound are not normally considered a
health hazard, however they are a primary cause
of odours. The concentrations from the flare are
normally far bellow accidental level but high
enough to be recognized by the smell and create
health symptoms such as nausea, vomiting and
asthmas.
Smog levels can arise as the result of excess TRS
in the atmosphere.
