Theme: Evaluation of yarn appearance in the area
Supervisor: Eva Moukov, M.Sc., Ph.D.
Contact email for more information: eva.mouckova@tul.cz

The yarn appearance is one of parameters for a yarn quality evaluation. In practice, the yarn appearance is
evaluated subjectively comparing a yarn board of defined winding density with a standard yarn board
according to ASTM D 2255-90, Standard Test Method for Grading Spun Yarns for Appearance or according
to standard SN 80 0704 Determination of yarn appearance. The evaluation is dependent on the reviewer
and their visually distinctive capabilities. There were suggested methods for the objective evaluation too, but
they are not widely used. The aim of this work is to chart the existing methods for yarn appearance
evaluation and propose and experimentally validate the objective method using yarn characteristics, yarn
appearance in area and standard ASTM D 2255-90 or SN 80 0704.

Theme: Relations between stress-strain curves of individual fibers and single staple yarns
Supervisor: prof. Ing. Bohuslav Neck, DrSc.
Contact email for more information: bohuslav.neckar@tul.cz

The principle aim of this work is a deeper understanding of some processes determining internal mechanics
of yarn, its tenacity and breaking strain. It is observed that 1) mean stress-strain curve of fibers shows
usually higher stress-values then mean stress-strain curve of yarn, and 2) the breaking point on stress-strain
curve of a yarn lies usually by other (smaller) value of breaking strain in relation to corresponding fibers. So,
the fiber tenacity utilization is a common effect of both of these processes. The work in this field shall be
concentrated to:
a) Experimental study of stress-strain curves of fibers and yarns. We think about cotton spinning, i.e.
cotton type of fibers (chemical above all), and ring- and OE-technologies.
b) Theoretical analysis of experimental results based on mathematical modeling of significant
phenomena (fiber slope in yarn body generalization of Gegauffs idea, variability of fiber crimp
idea of Neck and Das, etc.) determining differences between mentioned stress-strain curves.
c) Theoretical analysis of yarn breaks in relation to fiber breaks. Mathematical (stochastic) modeling of
destruction processes in yarns (variability of fiber properties idea of Neck and Das, influence of
gauge length ideas of Peirce, Neck and Das, etc.)

Color Measurement of Printed Textile using CCD Cameras
Sensorial textiles based on color changeable pigments

Theme: On-line color measurement of textile materials
Supervisor: Assoc. Prof. Michal Vik
Supervisor specialist: Ing. Vclav ejka, Ph.D. VTS
Contact email for more information: michal.vik@tul.cz, vaclav.cejka@vuts.cz

Automated visual inspection of industrial textiles has the potential to increase the overall production quality.
In this aim, we will investigate whether CCD cameras can detect all printed colors on textile materials and
determine the color measurement precision. Main comparison will be focused on compatibility with present
day on-line color measuring systems. A calibrated matrix allows color detection with higher accuracy then a
default transformation matrix. However, the use of such calibrated matrix prevents detection of a broad
spectrum of colors. The dichromatic reflection model should explain occurring deviations in color values of
homogenously colored textile patches, beside that will allows to improve traceability of on-line measured
data to standard off-line systems at factory.

Theme: Multispectral imaging and small color difference evaluation
Supervisor: Assoc. Prof. Michal Vik
Supervisor specialist: Ing. Martina Vikov, Ph.D.
Contact email for more information: michal.vik@tul.cz, martina.vikova@tul.cz

Color control is part of the critical path of the textile supply chain, from concept-to-consumer. Retailers are
requiring ever-smaller production lots and ever-shorter delivery times (in some cases, less than 11 weeks
from product design to store appearance). Consequently, an attractive route to shortening lead times and
reducing costs is to eliminate physical swatches and share only digital color data for pass/fail decisions
throughout the various stages of the supply chain. For digital communication to be effective, however, the
mathematical models now used for visual assessment of color difference in textiles must be substantially
improved. Models that predict absolute color, color difference and color changes because of changes in
lighting (color inconstancy) are also not optimum. Standard digital camera allows obtaining only trichromatic
data of measured color in comparison to spectrophotometer, which is obviously used in textile industry.
Multispectral imaging is a method of non-contact measurement where beside trichromatic data is for disposal
also spectral information at individual pixels.

Theme: Sensorial textiles based on color changeable pigments

Supervisor: Ing. Martina Vikov, Ph.D.
Supervisor specialist: martina.vikova@tul.cz

Major attention has been given to research, development and perfection of protective clothes, especially
their barrier features. For these protective barriers, it is important to understand how clothes or textiles
protect the wearer against the above-mentioned dangerous conditions associated with UV irradiation,
dangerous gasses extreme heat, etc. and if the protection is only partial or the protection is time limited by
ambient conditions.
Main task of this proposal is focused on sensorial textiles, which reacts by changing color because of its
dependence on external stimulus (light, gas, temperature, etc.). Special purpose is color changeable textile
production in point of view of application of mass dyeing and other continuous methods of textile materials
dyeing.

Some special protective garments like anti-ballistic vests do not support the water and vapour transfer in the
thickness direction. Therefore, moisture must be evaporated from the edges of the used clothing pieces.
Unfortunately, standard methods do not make possible to measure and investigate the in-plane moisture
transfer in fabrics. In the study, a new experimental method will be used, which enables the determination of
this unusual way of moisture transfer in textiles. Experimental results will be compared with the theoretical
ones.

Some special protective garments like anti-ballistic vests do not allow the air transfer in the thickness
direction. Therefore, air exchange must take place from the edges of the used fabrics. Unfortunately,
standard methods do not provide the study of the in-plane air transmission in fabrics. In the study, a new
experimental method will be used, which enables the determination air permeability of textiles in this unusual
direction. Experimental results will be compared with the theoretical ones.

Thema: Thermal resistance of firemen clothing exposed to large radiation heat flux
Supervisors: prof. Ing. Lubo Hes, DrSc. Dr. h. c.
Supervisor specialist: doc. Ing Vladimr Bajzik, Ph.D.

Firemen clothing made of aramide and nomex fibres protects the wearer against large radiation flux.
Standard test methods for determination of thermal resistance of such clothing cannot be employed, as most
of the heat passing through the clothing during their use in action is transferred by radiation. That is why new
standards of testing of clothing under conditions simulating the real radiation flux were developed in the last
decade. However, heat flux in these testing systems is measured by means of dynamic thermal calorimeters,
which exhibit certain disadvantages. In the study, a novel method of determination of thermal resistance of
firemen clothing will be used, which is based on the use of vertical hotplate which enable steady state heat
flux measurements by means of special high temperature resistant sensors.

Fabrics with high cooling flux in wet state may may contribute to thermal comfort of a weather in the hot-wet
climate. The cooling flux increases with the mass transfer surface of the studied fabrics, but also depends on
composition and geometry of these special fabrics. In the study, the effect of the mentioned parameters of
fabrics made of micro- and nanofibres on their cooling flow will be theoretically and experimentally analyzed.

In last decades, many studies were published, in which the effect of the air humidity and temperature on the
fabrics air permeability was theoretically and experimentally analyzed. However, most of the studies refers to
the fabric permeability at the standard laboratory conditions, but in the real life, fabrics are also used at
diferent climatic conditions. The purpose of the study is to investigate theoretically and experimentally the air
permeability (air flow) of selected textile fabrics (differing in structure and composition) at large extension of
the air humidity and temperature. New experimental setup for this study is available.

Theme: Relationship between anisotropy of bending rigidity and drape profile of fabric
Supervisor: Ing. Ludmila Fridrichov, Ph.D.
Contact email for more information: ludmila.fridrichova@tul.cz

The woven fabric is anisotropic and exhibits different values of mechanical properties in different directions.
The work aims are to find the theoretical relationships between the anisotropy of bending rigidity of the fabric
and the creation of its drape profile. The drape profile exhibits cyclic changes of the drape shape in the polar
diagram when the same fabric is dynamically stressed. The experimental study will be based on the
development of the instrument and software for measurement of the dynamic drape coefficient. The
theoretical part aims at the description of the mathematical model for the prediction of the drape profile of the
fabric. The research of bending rigidity and drape is important for the improvement of the appearance of
fabrics.
