RADOX
, a high performance
compound with superior fre safety properties.
At HUBER+SUHNER we defne our role as more than just a product supplier but more as a
solutions partner to our customers to solve their individual requirements. Our experience is
drawn from over 30 years of development in materials technology and extends beyond the
industry norm.
Research and development remains a key element at HUBER+SUHNER with approximately
7% of revenue re-invested back into product development.
Our RADOX
cable products are manufactured according to a Quality Management System
which is certifed to ISO 9001 (AS 9001).
RADOX
was developed by HUBER+SUHNER to fll the temperature gap between
conventional electrical cable insulation material such as PVC, XLPE + EPR which are rated
at 90C or lower and the more expensive high temperature resistant materials such as Tefzel
(ETFE), Tefon (PTFE), and silicon rubbers rated at temperatures of 150C and above.
Cables insulated and sheathed with RADOX
cables are accepted worldwide and are considered as the benchmark for fre
performance cabling systems.
Crosslinking of a cable material is the process of bonding together the molecular chains of a thermoplastic compound.
Once the material is crosslinked it is heat stabilised and therefore will not melt or fow. Crosslinking may be achieved
through electron beam (e-beam) technology, chemical processes or temperature pressure methods. The chemical and
temperature pressure methods are diffcult to control and can result in variability in the level of crosslinking. RADOX
is
e-beam crosslinked to achieve exact and uniform crosslinking throughout the length and depth of the material.
What does crosslinking mean?

FR Cables
and Performance when Subjected to Fire
The Propagation of Fire
In the event of a fre with fames directly affecting the
FR cable, the sheath will release water vapour as the
temperature elevates. As this water vapour is formed it
signifcantly retards the cables ability to burn, however,
should the fre continue as in a large fre, the sheath
will eventually degrade to an ash. The primary RADOX
insulation then with elevated temperature also releases
water vapour until it, in turn degrades. Irrespective of
the degradation of sheath and insulation the fame
barrier is designed to interact with the ash and maintain
the cables circuit integrity at the nominated voltage at
temperatures over 1000C.
Fire can spread rapidly to other areas in a building via the large volumes of cables installed in riser shafts and ceiling spaces.
It is for this reason that it is important to install highly fame retardant cables.
There are several tests for determining the fame propagation characteristics of cables, however as AS1600.5.1 is a good
representation of a real fre situation detailing methods for assessing the fame retardance of bunched cables having densities
of combustible material.
AS1660.5.1 (IEC 60332-3)
AS1660.5.1 details 3 test categories determined by the
amount of combustible material contained in a one metre
sample of bunched cable.
Category A: 7 litres of combustible material per metre
exposed to a fame for 40 minutes.
Category B: 3.5 litres of combustible material per
metre exposed to a fame for 40 minutes.
Category C: 1.5 litres of combustible material per
metre exposed to a fame for 20 minutes.
The cable specimens are placed vertically next to each
other on a vertical ladder tray and are then exposed to the
fame of a ribbon burner for the appropriate time.
After the removal of the fame, the cable specimens must
be wiped clean and the charred or affected portion should
not have reached a height exceeding 2.5 metres.
RADOX
FR and R125 Cables meet the requirements of
AS1660.5.1 for Categories A, B and C.

Toxic and Corrosive Gases
AS1660.5.4 (IEC 60754-1) Acid Gas Emission Test
19
Toxicity of combustion products is an extremely involved subject. The
concentrations of various gases considered fatal to humans within
30 minutes have been documented, however little is known about
the effect of lower concentrations of combinations of these gases.
It is therefore important to eliminate the most toxic of these (most
commonly the halogens) and to minimise the other less toxic gases
such as carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide, both of which are also
responsible for a great number of fatalities.
As well as being highly toxic, halogens combine with hydrogen to
form acid gases which can cause serious damage to electronic
equipment even in small scale fres which are extinguished quickly.
When combined with water these halide gases form concentrated
acid solutions which cannot only cause serious damage to building
structures, but which are extremely irritating to people trying to
evacuate.
HCI gas generated by burning PVC combines with water in the eyes,
throat, nose and lungs to form hydrochloric acid which contributes
signifcantly to panic, loss of coordination and subsequently in
combination with other toxic by-products such as CO, CO2, HCN etc.
leads to fatalities.
The following example highlights the quantity of these gases which
can be generated - A 10 metre length of cable with 2.86kg of PVC
can produce 320 litres of hydrochloric acid with highest possible
concentration. This is enough to cover an area of 1400m

AS1660.5.4 specifes a method for the
determination of the degree of acidity of
gases evolved during combustion of cables
by measuring pH and conductivity.
The performance requirements of this
standard state that the weighted pH value of
conductivity should not exceed 10S/mm.
The pH and conductivity values for RADOX
125 material are 5.46 and 4.8S/mm
respectively, well within the requirements of
the standard.
RADOX
FR and 125 cables have zero halogen content, produce no corrosive by-products of
combustion and due to the high content of inorganic fllers (50% by volume) have a very low fuel element.

Smoke Obstruction Test
Smoke is a major obstacle to the safe evacuation of people
during fre and also hinders the fre fghting efforts. Smoke
extraction equipment improves the situation, however
the use of low smoke products is a very important step in
reducing the panic and inevitable disorientation caused by
the presence of dense smoke generated by conventional
insulation and sheathing materials.
Most cables are insulated with PVC and the following quote
emphasises the dangers associated with such materials.
A 1 metre length of burning cable containing around 0.85kg
of PVC will result in complete obscuration in a room of
1000m
3
within 5 minutes.
RADOX
cables have an average minimum light transmission value greater than 84% for the range of cables tested.
Acceptance criterion given in AS 1660.5.2 is a minimum light transmission value greater than 60%.
For specifc cable data contact our sale offce on 1300 786 876.

Current Ratings
Correction for Variation in Ambient and Operating Temperatures
Current ratings detailed on page 23 have been calculated in accordance with the International Electrotechnical Commissions
publication IEC 60287 Calculation of the continuous current rating of cables (100% load factor) and are based on the
following assumptions.
i) Conductor temperature 105C (for conductors 2.5mm
2
90C)
ii) Ambient air temperature 40C
iii) Ambient soil temperature 25C
iv) Soil thermal resistivity 1.2Km/W
v) Depth of laying 0.5m to centre of duct / cable or group of ducts / cables
Reference should be made to AS3008.1 for derating factors.
21
There are occasions when cables may be operated in ambient temperatures either above or below 40C in which case the
current rating of the cable will be affected.
The following correction factors can be used to calculate the current rating at any given ambient temperature:

Correction for Different Cable Operating Temperatures
There may be instances when a cable will be carrying less than its rated current (for example where there are long cable runs
and voltage drop is the primary consideration) in this case it may be necessary to calculate the actual operating temperature
so that the correct values for voltage drop are used.
The estimated operating temperature at a given
current can be calculated using the following formula:
0 = (R - A)
(
I0
)
2
+ A
IR
The estimated current rating for other operating
temperatures can be calculated using the following formula:
I0 = IR
0 - A
R - A
WHERE
I0= Operating current in amperes
IR = Current ratings as given in table page 23
R = Operating temperature of cable when carrying IR in degrees Celsius
A = Ambient air or ground temperature in degrees Celsius
0 = Operating temperature when carrying I0 in degrees Celsius
Note: Please contact sales on 1300 786 876 for more accurate calculations

Voltage Drop
SAA wiring rules AS 3000 requires that the voltage drop between the consumers terminals and any point of the installation
shall not exceed 5% of the supply voltage at the consumers terminals.
Voltage drop (mV/A.m) values are given on page 24. These values are given at both the load power factor which results in the
maximum voltage drop and at 0.8 power factor.
Actual voltage drop can be calculated as follows:
Vd = L x I x Vc
1000
WHERE
Vd = Actual voltage drop in volts
L = Route length of circuit
Vc = mV/A.m values given in the tables
I = Current to be carried by the cable
Short Circuit
The generalised form of the adiabatic temperature rise equation which is applicable to any starting temperature is as
follows:
I
2
t = k
2
s

The fault current rating for a given duration can be calculated using the following formula:
I = ks
t
WHERE
t = Duration in seconds (maximum 5 seconds)
s = Nominal cross section of conductor in mm
2
I = Value of fault current in amps
k = A factor taking account of the resistivity, temperature coefficient and
heat capacity of the conductor material and the appropriate initial and final
temperatures
