KOHLER, Wis. July 27, 2016

Kohler Co. today announced
expansion plans for Destination
Kohlers boutique hotel, Inn on
Woodlake. The three-diamond
property, overlooking the serene Wood Lake in the Village of
Kohler, will undergo an expansion
and renovation through late 2016
and 2017, adding multi-bedroom
units and common spaces. The
Inn on Woodlake will remain open
during the expansion and renovations. A growing trend is a desire
for families and friends such as
golf buddies trips to stay in a
multi-room space to enhance their
overall guest experience.
We are excited to improve and
expand Destination Kohlers hospitality experiences, said Christine Loose, Group Director Lodging for Destination Kohler. The
addition of the Inn on Woodlake
multi-bedroom units will improve
and elevate our offering to guests.
The Inn on Woodlake expansion
will begin in the fall of 2016 and

add a combination of 4-bedroom

and 2-bedroom units along with
additional single rooms. Each
multi-bedroom unit will have a
common living room and space
where guests can enjoy each others company after a day of activities. In addition, the main lobby
and atrium will be expanded to
provide more common space for
travelers to enjoy.
When youre traveling with
friends and families, you want
to spend as much time together
as possible, said Shawn Boeldt,
Manager of Inn on Woodlake.
We have seen a growing trend
for the desire for more common
spaces, so we are excited to have
this offering available at the Inn on
Woodlake. We anticipate groups
of golfers, travelers and families
very much enjoying this lodging
option.
Plans have been submitted to

Laura Becherer Named Rio Paralympics Coach

Some people are passionate

about a sport and a select few are
able to combine it with a genuine
knack for coaching. Not many
take that combination to the level
that Laura Becherer has achieved.
Becherer, Sports Core swim instructor, was recently named as
assistant coach for the Rio 2016
Paralympic Games. Becherer
will join Team USA swimmers in
Houston, Texas, in late August for
final preparations leading up to
the Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro,
Brazil, Sept. 7-18.
Im really excited and honored
to be coaching for Team USA,
said Becherer, a longtime coach
of area swimmers at the Sheboygan YMCA, Sheboygan North
High School, Ozaukee Aquatics and currently at Sports Core.
She became involved with the
Paralympics when her visually
impaired daughter, Kelley (right),
became a top swimmer, ultimately
competing in the 2004, 2008 and
2012 Paralympics, winning a total of three gold and four bronze
medals.
Becherer attended those summer games in Athens, Beijing
and London. When her daughter
retired from competitive
swimming, she remained
involved, serving as the
Disability Chairperson
for Wisconsin Swimming and as a staff member for the 2015 Parapan
Am games in Canada.
I have a passion
for coaching and the
Paralympics, which is
the second-largest sporting event in the world,
Becherer said. These

athletes train as hard as Olympic

athletes and it is very competitive
to make the Paralympic team. As
a coach, Im thrilled to get to this
level.
Paralympics: The Olympic Games
for Disabled Athletes
The Paralympics are held two
weeks after the Olympics. In
fact, the word para means parallel or alongside, denoting that the
games are to be aligned with the
Olympics.
The first version of the
Paralympics, called the International Wheelchair Games, was
held concurrent with the London

Olympics in 1948. Competitors

included rehabilitated disabled
veterans of World War II. The first
official Paralympic Games were
held in Rome, Italy, in 1960, involving 400 wheelchair athletes
from 23 countries. Beginning
with the 1988 Seoul Olympics,
the Paralympics began to be held
following the Olympics in the
host city using the same facilities.
Today, the Paralympic Games
include five major classifications
of athletes: visual impairments,
physical disabilities, amputees,
cerebral palsy, spinal cord
injuries, and others, including disabilities such as
muscular dystrophy. Within the disability categories,
classification levels, which
differ from sport to sport,
are structured to allow athletes to compete against
those with similar ability
levels.

Paralympics and the Rio
schedule at paralympic.org.

Upon approval, a groundbreaking
will follow shortly after.

Keith Baka
awarded the
Eagle Scout Rank
Keith Baka was recently awarded the Eagle Scout Rank in a Court
Of Honor held by Boy Scout
Troop 831 at the Waelderhaus in
Kohler. He earned his Eagle Scout
Rank in February after being approved by an Eagle Scout Board
of Review.
Baka planned and led his Eagle project to benefit the citizens
of Kohler by leading his fellow
Scouts to assemble bat houses,
and working with the Village of
Kohler to install them in locations
throughout the community. The
bat houses help to encourage a
healthy bat population, and they
are expected to consume millions
of mosquitoes each summer, providing an environmentally friendly means of pest control to residents. In total, almost 100 hours
were invested in the planning and
execution of the project.
Fifteen-year-old Baka began
Scouting in 2006 with Pack 3831,
also of Kohler, where he earned
the Arrow of Light Award. He is
a Brotherhood member of the Order of the Arrow (OA), Scoutings
honor society, and served the past
year in the leadership position
of Chapter Chief of the Beshkno
Chapter. He is an active member
of the ceremonies team, doing
service for Scouting and the OA
to help usher other Arrowmen
into the various levels of the OA.
In 2015 he attended the National
Order of the Arrow Conference in
East Lansing, Michigan as well
as the OA National Leadership

Submitted photo

Seminar, and in 2016 performed

service at the Boy Scouts Summit
Bechtel Reserve in West Virginia,
while attending a High Adventure
camp there.
Going forward, Baka plans
on helping Troop 831 with leadership duties and working with
other Scouts along their own path
to advancement in Scouting. He
has been selected as a Lodge delegate and will be attending the
OA national planning conference
for the next century of the Order
this summer at Indiana University. Additionally, he will attend the
National Boy Scout Jamboree in
2017 at the Summit.
The Kohler Police Athletic
League (KPAL), a non-profit organization, charters Troop 831.

This is Mattie, an older gentleman really wanting a home

of his own, to live in fur-ever! He is a tri-color treeing
walker coonhound mix, and just fine with other dogs, but
needs to be in a home without cats. One look in his soulful eyes and you will fall in love! He has been patiently
waiting for the perfect place to call his own, and stretch
out and enjoy some sunshine. Come on in and meet Mattie, it could be a love match!

Muta is pretty much the perfect cat-good with dogs and

other cats, friendly and chatty, and loves affection! He has
the adorable quirk of spreading out his sweet little jelly
bean toes to let you know how happy he is. Besides all of
this sweetness, he is adorable, bringing to mind a butterscotch sundae with his beautiful coat. If you are looking
for the total package, look no further-this lovable boy of
11 months is your guy!

Superintendents Report (Quynh Trueblood)
YEAR-END SATISFACTION
There is a unique year-end satisfaction that comes
from the learning that takes place over the school year
followed by the anticipation of summer. The learning
experience for children and adults is similar and includes
working hard and achieving goals, having fun, exploring
new things, persevering through challenges, and
contributing to a community.
EFFECTIVE TEAM
The year was remarkable with onboarding two school
principals, a business manager, an administrative
assistant for the Elementary school, and a technology
coordinator. The administrative team used a framework
for Effective Teams to develop goals based on measures
and to guide our behaviors and develop a mindset for
high performance. We look forward to onboarding the
Athletics and Activities Director this summer.
CULTURE FOR LEARNING
We are dedicating time for reflection to set the stage
to live our mission with planning for professional
development that is focused on a brain-based
understanding of learners and creating a culture for
students and adults to thrive in. The three targets
include: Growing Minds, Visible Learning, and My
Learning Plan Oasys.
Elementary Principals Report (Lisa Greene)
We had a great ending to our 2015-16 school year. Our
PBIS celebration was held on Wednesday, June 8th. We
raffled off a Chromebook and Kids Nook. Both of those
were super popular and the kids were simply delightful
in their excitement. McKenna Holtzricher won the Nook
and Ethan Michon won the chromebook. (Both from Mrs.
Bartelts class.)
We followed the assembly with a trivia contest which
was very well received. Mrs. Bittner ran that and set it
up through a free online program called Quizziz. Mrs.
LaDukes class won the trivia contest. The kids had a lot
of fun with that, as did the teachers, so we plan on using
the Quizziz program more next year.
We ended our PBIS celebration with a dunk tank in
the afternoon, Id like to give a special thank you to
Mr. Waters, Mrs. Kukla, Mr. Dumez, Mrs. Bitter, Mrs.
Magle, Mrs. Depagter, and Mr. L, (Who graciously
replaced Mrs. Hoffman), who were the brave teachers
(who clearly will do anything for kids) for braving the cold
water and multiple dunks. I can attest that the water was
COLD!
We finished up our school year with an AMAZING field
day held in the gym on the last day of school. The Kohler
School Friends did a tremendous job. Thank you to
Leslie Yetzer and Sarah Smith and all the parents who
volunteered and gave such a great experience to all
the kids. The kids just had so much fun! And the face
painting! Those were some talented Moms on that
station!! I cant imagine how exhausted they must have
been!

focused on positive leadership, with an emphasis on

Multipliers. With this in mind, we have specifically
targeted ways by which our leadership can cause a
direct change in capacity of our employees. This will
be evident as part of our Strategic Action Plans as well
as our Educator Effectiveness evaluation and coaching
model for employees. To these ends we have targeted
individuals to lead our in-house professional learning,
as well as members of our entire learning community to
strengthen that which we already do well. We are focused
on not only School-Life Balance, but also improving our
services in our schools to help all students in our learning
community become inspired, engaged and achieve
success.
Classroom Highlights
The Middle School took class trips. The 6th grade
visited the Milwaukee Zoo while the 7th and 8th graders
spent a beautiful day in Chicago. Both experiences
were the culminating experience for these students.
From the beginning of the year where we spend the
day at Kohler Andrae State Park, which set the tone
for a positive school climate and culture, through the
end of the year. Our students have been extremely
well behaved, achieved high academic standards and
have demonstrated strong character attributes. It is
experiences, like these, that develop strong bonds
between all stakeholders in our learning environment.
We are also very pleased to announce that one of our
students, Casey Johnson, earned the title of State Tennis
Champion, the first to be crowned from Kohler High
School. Congratulations to Casey, his family and our
coaching staff for helping to bring out the finest in our
students.
Graduation
Graduation on Sunday June 5 can widely considered a
success. We celebrated 100% of our senior class. Special
thank you to Lynn Vander Schaaf, administrative assistant
and Christine Voice, high school counselor for their hours
and dedication to our graduating seniors.
On a similar note, I would like to extend a Thank You to
the entire Village of Kohler for this graduation celebration.
There was a certain feeling of pride that could be
felt throughout the entire Village from the graduation
celebrations. I am proud, honored, and humbled to have
the opportunity to serve this district as Middle and High
School Principal.

scooters. Sidewalks are bumpy, but the kids still are not allowed to ride
these in the streets. Also, state statutes prohibit any motorized vehicle
from being operated on the sidewalks. That would include motorized
stand up scooters. For these motorized scooters, this basically leaves
only private property where permission has been granted. Please
understand that the state statutes cannot be changed by Village
ordinance, therefore, we cannot permit someone to operate in violation.
Many of these items are not cheap to purchase. Please be cognizant of
the rules prior to purchasing one for the family.

Residential backflow preventers may exist or be required on lawn

irrigation systems, wet fire protection systems, hot water heating (boiler)
systems, swimming pool fills, water features, etc. Backflow preventers
may also be required if there is another water source on the site such as
a well, pond, river, etc.

FROM FIRE CHIEF MIKE LINDSTROM

Cross Connection Control (Backflow) Program

The Village of Kohler is required to move forward with a cross connection
control (backflow preventer) program. WDNR Regulations require every
water supplier develop and implement a comprehensive cross connection
control program for the elimination of existing cross connections and
prevention, and protection from all future cross connections.

Backflow preventers are the property of the water customer and the
responsibility lies with the customer for annual testing and maintenance.
The water customer must contract with a licensed tester to perform the
required annual tests. Most local plumbers are certified to test backflow
preventers.
The contractor hired to oversee Kohlers backflow program is the firm of
Aqua Backflow, a national firm located in Elgin, IL specializing in cross
connection control management. Aqua Backflow can be reached at
847-742-2296 with any questions. Your Village of Kohler contact, Brett
Edgerle, can be reached at 920-459-3881.
All water customers will be contacted by Aqua Backflow at some point
over the next few years to perform a site survey. Inspectors will be
surveying your property to be sure that your water systems are protected
from existing or potential cross connections.
The Kohler Cross Connection Control Program is designed to safeguard
public health. We ask for your cooperation with our program, its
enforcement, and any requests for access or information that come from
Aqua Backflow or Village staff.
Disposable Wipes
Residents are cautioned against flushing disposal wipes down the toilet.
Although many wipes are labeled disposable or flushable, quite often
they clog sewer laterals and mains. The preferred method of disposal is
to bag the wipes and place in your garbage receptacle. During normal
maintenance checks in June, a sanitary sewer main was found to be on
the verge of clogging due to these wipes. Fortunately, the DPW staff was
able to clear this obstruction before a sewer back-up occurred.
Garbage Receptacles
Residents are encouraged to store their garbage receptacles in discrete
locations. Ideally they should be stored in a garage. Other suitable
areas include side/back yards, or any other area screened from public
view. Please be reminded that all containers must be stored with the lids
securely closed and away from any heat source (grill).
Holiday Garbage Pick-up
When a holiday falls on a Monday, all garbage pick-ups will be one
day later than scheduled. For example, Labor Day falls on Monday,
September 5; therefore garbage pick-up for that week will be on
Wednesday, September 7th.
Brush Pick-up
The Village crew picks up brush and tree branches that can be run
through a chipper on Tuesdays (with the exception of Holiday schedule).
The material must be in 4-foot lengths, maximum 6-inch diameter and
piled neatly at the curb. No thorny material or material with root balls is
allowed. Thorny material, root balls and all loose and leafy material must
go in the yard waste cart. Curbside leaf collection is in the fall only.
Rummage or Yard Sale Signs
Please be advised that only one Yard or Rummage Sale sign is allowed
per property; the sign must be located on sale property. Signs located
on/in cars on street right-of-ways are prohibited.
Fire Hydrant Flushing and Water Valve Exercising
During the months of August and September, the Village Public Works
Department will be exercising water valves. The Department will also be
performing maintenance on fire hydrants and flushing the mains. The
work will be performed Monday through Thursday. Residents should
be aware that there will be periods of cloudy and discolored water as
sediment and mineral deposits in the water mains are disturbed.
Noxious Weeds/Grass Length
According to Village Ordinance 8.24, it is the duty of every homeowner
to destroy all noxious weeds on their property before they go to seed.
Examples of noxious weeds are Canadian thistle, English charlock, wild
mustard, creeping jenny, goats beard and cotton-bearing trees. Also,
grass that exceeds nine-inches in height is in violation of this ordinance.
The Village gives five-day notice to the homeowner to mow their grass.
Otherwise, the Village will mow at the homeowners expense.

The kids are home for the summer, and there is no better time to
formulate and discuss an emergency plan with your family. A complete
plan includes:
o A clear method of notifying all occupants of an emergency
o Identify escape routes
o A meeting point, outside the home, for all household occupants
o Memorization of emergency numbers and contacts
Ensure the chosen rendezvous point is a location where you will be able
to meet and converse with emergency responders. Special consideration
and planning should be put in place for small children and elderly adults,
as well as comprehension and use of window and door locks and security
devices. Having a plan in place reduces confusion and panic when faced
with an emergency situation, and will aid in providing clear and coherent
communication with responding emergency personnel.
Please remember to keep sources of ignition, and flammable materials,
secured and out of the reach of children. Have a safe and happy summer!
