'tili(ation of coconut as raw materials and consumption are examples of natural
resource use are optimal) because almost nothing in all the rest of the ingredients
used. If all the natural resources can be optimi(ed li$e what we do in the coconut)
using plants that are certainly less.
Exploring Material is one approach in the field of creations that can be applied to
industries such as craft and design business. Through this approach) then almost all
materials can be used as raw material. *or example) a corn plant) which consists of
corn cobs) corn hus$) and corn stal$) is a material that can be used as raw materials in
e+eryday products.
,esearch has been conducted since -..-) pro+ing that the material can be utili(ed as
raw material that produces a product that can be used as new commodities such as
decorati+e lights from corn cobs) onion lamp caps) seeds or s$in table. At least on the
research can be concluded that any material can be approached from any
characteristic) among other structural characteristics) aesthetics) dimensions) physical)
and chemical.
Implementation of exploring material approach in the business world) will directly
contribute to the reduction of the use of wood) rattan) and raw materials that ha+e
been used. Therefore) the application of this approach in the business world is one
step from the real business world in addressing global climate change is highly
dependent on the presence of plants or trees. If seed corn is /0 of the total corn plant)
then through this approach) expected to get a larger percentage of utili(ation of corn
plants themsel+es.

preface
In the important meeting of the leaders of the Country G-. in England) the
Greenpeace group criticised the Indonesian go+ernment because it was considered
failed to carry out the real step to reduce greenhouse gases emissions from
deforestisation. *urther in fact was re+ealed that Indonesia the identity could obtain
the big profit from international efforts to reduce emissions from industrialised
countries to protect the forest because of ha+ing the wide forest territory. In a report
that was sold on commission by Greenpeace) it was demonstrated that the approach of
,educed Emissions from 3eforestation and *orest 3egradation 4,E335 was based on
the mar$et will fail) because of destroying the carbon mar$et) and not gi+ing the

incenti+e for the use of clean energy and was reno+ated) as well as loc$ed
sophisticated carbon technology and his infrastructure.
In the further comment) the carbon mar$et must focus in pushed clean technology and
was reno+ated in sectors of the $ey) and de+eloped countries must ma$e the reduction
in large6scale emissions in his country and helped funding of the protection of the
forest in de+eloping countries li$e Indonesia.
Global warming was one of the signs from the management of forest resources that
was not continuous) that could ha+e an impact to the life and the condition bentang
the land from all the good countries the producer8s country 4emissions5 greenhouse
gases 4G,15 and not.
The increase in the concentration of greenhouse gases will it was worried about
increase the temperature of the low layer of the atmosphere that is the layer of the
troposphere because of long wa+e radiation that was broadcasted the surface of the
earth will partly be trapped in the layer of the troposphere) because could not
penetrate to the layer of the higher atmosphere 49a$itan) #::75. Indonesia was some
part of the solution towards the reduction in global warming.
The global climate changed in the ;uite big stage. This change happened because of
the existence of the increase in the G,1 concentration in the atmosphere. <ne of
them was C<- gas. The increase in the concentration of gas C<- in the atmosphere
happened resulting from the process of the burning of the fossil fuel. Approximately
-.0 from the total G,1 increase in the atmosphere were caused by emissions C<-
resulting from the burning.
In 1yoto %roto$ol was agreed to to gi+e the solution towards this G,1 increase. The
de+elopment and the continuous management of forest resources were one of the
se+eral solutions that had been proposed to reduce G,1 emissions. In the context of
resources) the paradigm of the forest management must shift from the system that
beorientasi in economics an eye headed the oriented system the ecosystem. So as
conser+ation of the function of the forest ecology will continue to be awa$ened until
the generation that will come. 'ntil this the rate of this forest damage mo+ed
constantly) e+en precisely increasingly fast.
The increase in G,1 emissions could in the layer of the atmosphere be still
continuing to increase without the existence of pre+ention efforts or the reduction in
emissions that must be carried out by human$ind) in part first used the alternati+e fuel
-
to fuel oil or the use of fuel oil as efficiently as possible) and the two) by means of
sustainable de+elopment ha+e a perception the en+ironment 4Sustainable
de+elopment5 4Abdurahman) -..=5.
This situation indeed still was caused by the existence of the re;uirement for wood as
the raw material for +arious needs that continued to increase.
>arious efforts were carried out in o+ercoming the limitations of the amount of
supplies of forest wood in part by shifting attention to wood $inds that came from the
people8s forest or the crop forest) especially as the raw material of wood of the
processing industry) both that was small6scale and big.
<ne of the efforts that it was proposed could be approached was through the method
of the creation approach that used the other raw material 4the alternati+e5 to replace
the use of wood. The approach that was carried out was the material exploration
approach to the con+entional raw material li$e s$in fruit) the seeds) as well as tubes
that until now was not yet made use of optimally.
Exploring Material
Exploring Material was one of the design approaches that aimed at recei+ing new
possibilities from one material was based on his characteristics. This typical response
was something that was unimaginable beforehand by our thoughts.

Several experiment concerning the character of bamboo

distortion and the screening. This that it was hoped emerged in results of the
processing that was carried out directly) so as when we hoped for a new idea) our
thoughts were not gi+en by the opportunity to refine this idea. 9i$ewise with what
was mentioned with pretention) if the attitude in carrying out this process was
preceded with pretention) then this matter will become a filter that the idea distortion.
%retention was something that really must be a+oided in the process of this search.
This approach in fact really simple) but needed the attitude that was different from
what has in belie+e in until now.

The wor$ abo+e will be difficult to be recei+ed if relying on the a+ailable memory.
'ntil now) many circles stated the approach that was stated best was the approach that
was logical and?or rational) meaning that this approach really relied on the memory or
the concept) on the other side) se+eral other circles stated that the good wor$ was
really determined by the taste someone) or the talent. !oth of them possibly true for
the certain matter) but if his problem was to try answered how produced something
that was new) then the two approaches apparently not was enough.
*rom the experiment that was carried out in the research in the en+ironment of the
product of the design studio) was gotten by se+eral conclusions that could be ta$en in

#. The 3esign !y 3oing process had a function of finding the form of the new
form) the original form) not to get the best design. The process of getting the
good design and the good form could be carried out through the other
approach. Meaning that) to get the newness and originality would exact if
using this approach) but inexact if must produce the good design.
-. At least) was recei+ed by @ characteristics that could become the material
special characteristics) that is2 the physical characteristics) chemistry) the
structure) aesthetic) and the dimension) that could become +ariable for the
disco+ery of a newness.
=. <ne of the matters that really were connected with the 3esign !y 3oing
approach was characteristic material that was used as the ob&ect. E+ery time
material was belie+ed in had the character or the characteristics of the typical
characteristics) that definitely will show the trend that was different towards a
processing 4the treatment5.
A material on the bottom line has se+eral distincti+e characteristics) which
differentiate it from other materials. !amboo Material has different characters with
wooden or iron material) so the response due to the gi+en by the bamboo will be
sufficiently distincti+e in comparison to the response recei+ed from the non material
of bamboo.
Conclusion
*rom experiments conducted on a wide range of raw materials of non con+entional)
obtained real results which showed that Adesign by doingB approach through
exploration of the material can be used as one of the right approach for manufacturers
to produce wor$ that is comparable to what is produced by craftsmen in using
con+entional materials such as wood or rattan. This conclusion can then direct the
beha+iour of the wor$ to forget wood and rattan as a raw material for handicrafts
industry Indonesia can contribute in reducing the use of wood and rattan as rescue
efforts of forests to reduce carbon emissions.
*rom the results of experiments carried out) can be pro+en that the number of
+ariables that are owned by any of the material will open the greater the chances of
the emergence of the desired by the community of no+elty of the consumer.
@
Creati+ity is as long as it is used to accommodate the excessi+e exploitation of the use
of wood at least transferable on other raw materials li$e s$in fruit) whole grains)
tubes) or grasses. So the consumer demands can be met) whilst still a reforestation
woodland get a great opportunity to do.
And thus) if the industry manufacturers in Indonesia can be gradually switched to
using this method of creating it by itself it is going to contribute in maintaining forest
sustainability and the reduction of carbon emissions.
